Es handelt sich dabei um Sanktionsmassnahmen, welche die sittliche und rechtliche Ordnung der Gemeinde gewährleisten sollen und den teilweisen oder gänzlichen Ausschluss des normwidrig Handelnden von der Teilnahme am Leben der Kirche zur Folge haben. ¿Die theologische Leitidee der Exkommunikation ist darin gelegen, dass schwere Sünde von Gott trennt und dass dies adäquaten Ausdruck in dem äusseren und sichtbaren Verhältnis zur Kirche erfährt.¿ Von den ersten Jahrhunderten an erlebte die Christenheit die Wirklichkeit der Sünde und die Kirche war gezwungen, - trotz der in der Taufe empfangenen Sündenvergebung - für die nach der Taufe begangenen Sünden die Möglichkeit der Busse, einer paenitentia secunda, zu eröffnen. Um dem Anspruch der Heiligkeit des Gottesvolkes gerecht zu werden, musste der schwere Missetäter bei der öffentlichen Kirchenbusse der Gemeinschaft entrückt werden und konnte erst nach Abbüssung seiner Schuld in diese zurückkehren. So gesehen war die Exkommunikation also ¿ein Rechtsakt mit dem Erziehungszweck der Besserung¿ und damit eng verbunden mit der Entwicklung des Busswesens. Wie aber sah so ein Bussverfahren aus? Auf welche Sünden wurde es angewandt und welche Busswerke hatte der reuige Sünder zu vollbringen? Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, anhand von exemplarischen Quellen die Entwicklung und Ausgestaltung des kirchlichen Bussverfahrens im Frühen Christentum zu skizzieren. Gerade für die Zeit vom 1. bis hinein ins 4. Jh. n. Chr. - also inmitten der ¿Adoleszenz-Phase¿ der Ekklesia - wird jedoch deutlich, dass es sich bei dem Thema Busse ¿um ein eminent theologisches und zugleich praktisches Problem¿ handelt. Es spielte nicht nur die Auseinandersetzung mit praktischen Fragen der Gemeindezucht eine Rolle, die Alte Kirche musste auch den historischen Gegebenheiten Rechnung tragen (Christenverfolgungen, Schismata, Aufstieg zur Reichskirche etc.). Weitere Probleme ergaben sich aus theologischen Anschauungen zur Sünde und Sündenvergebung. In diesem Zusammenhang stritten immer wieder rigoristische und mildere Parteien über die ¿orthopraxe¿ Bussdisziplin. In der Folge bietet sich dem heutigen Betrachter der alten Kirchenbusse ein äusserst uneinheitliches und schwer zu überschauendes Bild. Aus diesem Grund beschränkt sich die vorliegende Arbeit auf die Darstellung des Bussverfahrens, ohne die theologischen Problemstellungen eingehender zu erörtern.

Behandelt werden hierbei die Zeit von der Eroberung des Voralpenraumes bis zur Überwindung der Reichskrise des dritten Jahrhunderts. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei bereits auf den grossen, charakterisierenden Entwicklungslinien, welche die drei behandelten Siedlungszentren durchliefen. Anschliessend werden diesen Orten separierte Kapitel zugestanden ¿ zuerst dem zivil geprägten Augsburg, anschliessend dem militärisch geprägten Regensburg und zuletzt Kempten. Die Binnengliederung der drei Abschnitte erfolgt jeweils nach den gleichen Betrachtungskriterien, welche zusammengefasst einen allgemeinen Überblick über das spätantike Siedlungsleben liefern sollen, in ihrer Aufteilung jedoch auch detaillierte Einblicke in exemplarische Themengebiete und Aspekte des Lebens in der späten Antike geben. Der erste Abschnitt behandelt übergreifend die Topographie und die Raumkonzepte des Siedlungsortes. Hierbei stehen die Verteidigungsmassnahmen im Vordergrund. Zunächst erfolgt eine Untersuchung der Wehranlagen und Mauern, anschliessend werden Militärgebäude in den Blick genommen, welche den Siedlungsort als möglichen Garnisonsort ausweisen. Hierbei werden auch Funde von Militaria miteinbezogen. Der zweite Abschnitt thematisiert schliesslich übergreifend den Bereich Gesellschaft und Religion. Aufgearbeitet werden diese Aspekte durch eine Betrachtung der erschlossenen Gräberfelder, ihrer Lage und ihrer Grösse im Umfeld der Siedlungen. Dabei werden vorliegende Bestattungssitten aufgezeigt und Rückschlüsse auf mögliche Sozialstrukturen, kulturellen Wandel und germanische, romanische und christliche Aspekte vorgenommen. Der dritte Abschnitt nimmt sich übergreifend der Wirtschaft und der Infrastruktur der jeweiligen Siedlung an. Besonders die Grundversorgung soll hierbei hervorgehoben werden. Dies teilt sich einerseits in die grösstenteils durch villae rusticae erfolgte Nahrungsversorgung sowie sekundär die Wasserversorgung. Dies liefert nicht nur Aussagen über den allgemeinen Fortbestand und damit die Kontinuität der Siedlung, sondern lässt auch Rückschlüsse auf den regionalen und unter Vorbehalt auch den überregionalen Handel zu.
