I had the pleasure of quilting a couple of Julie Herman's quilts for Quilt Market. Julie is the mastermind behind Jaybird Quilts and these are a couple new patterns by her. You must check them out on her website. This first one is called "Boomerang" and I custom quilted it for her. And this second one is another new pattern called "Arcade Game" And this one is a pretty new pattern called "Splash" Thanks for letting me quilt for you Julie. Always so much fun. Teresa

Chinese Lanterns November 8, 1933-Nancy Cabot published her Chinese Lanterns pattern today. Though not a floral design, this is yet another applique pattern. She wrote "its execution presents a rare opportunity to the quilter who likes to make use of many vivid colors, since the lanterns may be as colorful in fabric as they are in paper." Nancy Cabot had published another pattern using the lantern motif, Japanese Lantern, on June 20, 1933. That pattern was a pieced block. There is a very bright, colorful lantern quilt here. It's not exactly Nancy Cabot's design but it definitely has some of her motifs. I can't find her pattern or any quilts made using it. Tomorrow-Kansas Troubles

I've been busy sewing blue scraps together to make small blocks of 4" and 6" squares. Tomorrow, if there's time, I'll begin making some 8" squares, but I also have to take Jolie to Lafayette for new ballet shoes and then to JoAnn Fabrics for enough black backing to finish the Harley Davidson quilt. I thought I could do it using pieces from the stash, but no. It can't be done. There's just not enough black solid, even if I were to piece together all of what I have. Since I was playing with blue scraps, I thought it might be nice to look for some inspiration for those blocks. Here's what I found. "Paulitiks" by Preeti Harris of Sew Preeti Quilts Made for her husband, Paul. Guess how I found out... Have a wonderful week! I hope to see you in the studio, Mary
Add a side strip to the humble string block to get something new and asymmetric. Directions begin with a traditional string block, but you’ll soon be turning your strings in all directions because it’s so fun. You could call this a slab quilt, and it's an easy way to try slabs if you've always wanted to. You can't mess it up. There is no wrong way to make the blocks. Just make what's pretty to you. A supreme scrap buster, this pattern makes a quilt mothers will actually let babies use, instead of saving it in the closet. My veterinarian cried when I gave her one for her new baby because it looked like the quilts her grandmother had made. And she had her baby professionally photographed on the quilt. I use prints with cowboys, owls, polka dots, abstracts, botanicals, kittens, roosters, crows, fruit, and tons of other stuff for baby to enjoy during tummy time. The quilt has all the cuddle of yesteryear, plus some visual punch. Today’s grandmas have modern equipment, and we push the design envelope. Pattern includes a complete diagram and easy cutting instructions for your success.
