Seattle Times world fair issue from 1962
The Century 21 Exposition, also known as the Seattle World’s Fair, was held from April 21, 1962, until October 21, 1962. Over 10 million people attended the fair. The Space Needle and the Alweg monorail are relics of this historical exposition. The Century 21 Exposition was originally planned in 1955…

Issued: April 25, 1962 Scott catalog #: 1196 The Space Needle is pictured on U.S. #1196, to represent the 1962 World’s Fair held in Seattle, Washington. The Fair, also called the “Century 21 Exposition,” featured the Needle and the Alweg Monorail, which is shown on the stamp. The Fair was influenced by the Space Race as well as the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. President John F. Kennedy was supposed to attend the closing ceremony in October 1962, but bowed out, saying he was suffering from a “heavy cold.” In reality, he was dealing with the most sensitive time in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Space Needle was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River when it was completed in 1962. It had an elevation of 605 feet, with an observation deck at 520 feet. It is still in operation today, as is the monorail. 20 Mint unused postage stamps with original gum as issued by the Post Office. These stamps are genuine and valid to use as postage for current mailing. Be sure to use enough total postage to meet the current postage rate for mailing a letter if you want to use them mailing. Also good to use for scrapbooking or displaying in a small picture frame. It's a miniature work of art. If you would like me to put a custom order together that includes this stamp please convo me with your questions or request a custom order. I have a large inventory of Vintage US Postage stamp for you to buy from.
It's not just a county fair, it's not just a Europe fair, but a World's Fair!!!

Countless celebrities, from astronaut John Glenn (1921-2016) to Walt Disney (1901-1966) visited Seattle between April 21 and October 21, 1962, to attend the 1962 Century 21 Exposition (Seattle World'
More scans from the souvenir film strip of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The fair focused on science and technology, one of the major buildings was the United States Science Pavilion. The large arches add a modern airy look to the structure and may have been the influence for Rolly Crump's Tower of Four Winds. A World's Fair must include international exhibits and in Seattle several small countries who could not afford to build a stand alone structure were put into an international mall. This concept sounds fun as a visitor would be able to visit many varied exhibits in a short time. I assume the skyway was a Von Roll design.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Seattle World's Fair opening. The Space Needle's saucer was been temporarily painted original "Galaxy Gold" (that would be "orange" to us regular folk) earlier this week in honor of this grand occasion. I'm growing my World's Fair postcard collection and wanted to share. "The Space Needle Seattle, Washington. It rises to the height of 600 feet and is topped by a restaurant which revolves 360 degrees every hour. About 260 persons can be served. An observation deck and snack service is also atop the Needle for those who wish to feast mostly on the tremendous scenic panorama. C-719 Ektachrome by Clifford B. Ellis" "Two symbols of modern times. The sleek Monorail, first of its kind in America, swiftly whisks visitors to the Seattle World's Fair grounds and back to beautiful downtown Seattle. Like a sentinel watching, stands the 600 foot Space Needle. Color photo by Max R. Jensen" I would be thrilled if you shared links with me of blogs or uploaded photos or postcards of the Seattle World's Fair. Dear___________, I'm visiting the Pavilion of Electric Power at the World's Fair. It's a 40 ft. high model dam with water pouring over it. And there are animated displays that show how water power, solar energy and atomic energy are used to produce the electricity we take for granted. Your should be sure and see this spectacular Fair before it close October 21st.
Important note: If you are looking to place an order for a shipping address in Alaska, Hawaii, APO/FPO/DPO, or a PO Box, please see the shop announcement or contact us via an Etsy convo before placing your order. Looking to give your home that retro Mid-Century look, but you need something with a Seattle theme? Well, now you can with our matchbook poster based of an old matchbook given away in 1962 at the World's Fair. This edition features the "Boulevards of the World" cover with an abstract scene of a crowd of fair-goers and a Japanese exhibit along with the iconic Space Needle. The impossibly imperfect half-tone pattern gives the poster that perfect groovy retro look to complement any room or swanky coffeehouse. This is the first of six matchbook posters we have available. Since our print is 12x36, you'll be able to fit your printer in a narrower vertical space than many posters would afford. However, we strongly recommend measuring your intended wall first, due to the cost and amount of the ink and paper involved we cannot offer refunds or exchanges for wrong size chosen. (We do, however, offer refunds and exchanges for damage caused by the delivery firm/post office. Please see our shop policies for more details.) We scanned our copy of the matchbook with our fancy-smancy graphic-arts scanner so we could offer you our matchbook posters at the best resolution as possible. You can see a video of the 12x36" poster reprint versus the original matchbook as part of this listing's preview photos. We aren't able to offer framed/matted prints, but we recommend checking your local art/craft supply store and/or the following websites: www.craigframes.com, arttoframe.com, or framebridge.com. Craig Frames also has an Etsy storefront! Check them out. Our line of matchbook poster reprints is printed on your choice of Red River heavy-weight matte paper or Aurora Fine Art paper (prices vary for paper selected) with archival inks. The Aurora Fine art paper is recommended if you are using something like magnetic wood hangers to hang your print. Your print will be shipped in a protective tube. Check out our other maps and other prints: http://www.etsy.com/shop/OldParlorPrints - we will be adding items regularly! For other questions, please see our shop policies. If you still have questions, feel free to send us a convo/email. Have a great day and thanks for stopping by!
