Adopting traditional decorative motifs found on Ming Dynasty ceramics, Chinese artist Lei Xue sculpted these humorous smashed aluminum cans that bridge the gap of some 600 years of art history. The pieces are part of an ongoing series titled Drinking Tea, and unlike the mechanical process of producing cans, each object is sculpted and painted by hand. You can see more of Xue’s work at Martina Detterer Gallery. More
But no matter how traditional the rite of matrimony may seem now, global human history has favored a different form of intimacy, which is now being seen in a new context: polyamory. Here’s how non-monogamy has evolved over time.

The mind-bending sculptures of Johnson Tsang push the limits of imagination and sometimes even of gravity. By turns whimsical, lyrical, and provocative, his works capture the fluidity of both physical motion and human emotion while challenging us to see the world in a different way.
Part painting, part sculpture. 100% amazing.

While Dutch artist Joris Kuipers spent years studying traditional painting and fine art techniques at both the Arnhem Academy and the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen, his installations fly in the face of anything traditional. WanJin Gim (previously) continues to amaze with his detailed drawings that show the nuanced colors and textures of bare skin. When first viewing the artwork of Shintaro Ohata up close it appears the scenes are made from simple oil paints, but take a step back and you’re in for a surprise. Each piece is actually a hybrid of painted canvas and sculpture that blend almost flawlessly in color and texture to create a single image. The cinematic figures are sculpted from polystyrene while the backgrounds are made from traditional painting techniques. Via his artist statement: Shintaro Ohata is an artist who depicts little things in everyday life like scenes of a movie and captures all sorts of light in his work with a unique touch: convenience stores at night, city roads on rainy day and fast-food shops at dawn etc. More
Juz Kitson lures her audience into an opulent garden and casts them out renewed: an encounter with her sublime installations provokes deeply affected responses. Kitson commands her talismanic objects to test the boundaries between contemporary ceramics and contemporary shamanism. Bringing together Dehua and Jingdezhen porcelain, often embellished with fur, Kitson creates a form of memento mori meets animist fetish. Overtly seductive, the works’ tension lies in resisting the conventions of traditional ceramic craft - the wheel and plinth, both central to ceramic traditions. Bound with mystique and feminine power, Kitson’s suspended chimeras become both captivating and unnerving, touching gently on a raw, surrealist nerve.Sydney born Kitson divides her time between Australia (where the bush is a rich hunting ground) and Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China, a country she first visited in 2009 to work with renowned installation artist Lin Tianmiao.
