“Extremely resilient yet fragile” is how artist Karolina Romanowska describes the moody, anthropomorphic characters that comprise her series of sculptural works. Romanowska hand-builds a vast array of fantastical personas from clay, using a combination of slabs, coils, and molds to form flat tongues, individual teardrops, and horns with pointed tips. Most of my schools will be looking at the Olympics at some point this term. I am no great sportsman, so this is my contribution - the Ancient Greeks - tragedy and comedy. This term is all about 3d and sculpture. Times are hard and resources are hard to come by, so we are starting off with card. Based on the theatrical masks of Ancient Greece, the class chose tragic or comedic characters. Eyes and a mouth were cut from a folded piece of card, with the emphasis on symmetry and mood. A second piece of card was used to make a nose and brow and glued to the face at an angle to form a realistic profile. Hair, beards and laurel wreaths were added using curled and scored card scraps. Bring on the clay!

For the 2018 marketing of Barcelona’s long-running Grec Festival, which includes dance, theater, circus, and music, the London-based Lobulo Studio was tapped to create a series of unusual paper masks. Using the prompt “new species,” Lobulo explains on their website that they were “playing with the concept of new rare species that nobody has seen before” in order to “bring color, joy, and readiness to discover”. Each mask conveys a unique persona: a four-eyed character’s mouth is open in awe, while drops of blue water-like shapes convey a fluid suit of armor. More
