*UPDATED - 1/22/15* This bundle contains: - Arms Template (.pdf, .jpg, AND .psd file versions!) - Head Template (.pdf, .jpg, AND .psd file versions!) - Body Template (.pdf, .jpg, AND .psd file versions!) - Project Example Photo (.jpg AND .pdf files) There are three different templates included in this bundle to design, cut, and glue your own cube-like figure sculpture. One page is the head, one is the body, and the third page has two separate arm templates. Final assembled sculptures will be approximately 5" tall, 3" wide, and 3" deep. When I taught this project, I used the templates with graphite paper and had students trace them onto colored construction paper to create the pieces. The template has tabs to indicate where the paper should be glued together. (You could also design directly on the printouts and then cut/glue the project together, but the quality is not as nice, in my opinion.) Also included in this bundle is my a photo file of my example/sample projects (.jpg AND .pdf photo file), which you can use to show students design possibilities, or as your own reference for assembling the final sculptures. This is a great simple paper sculpture project to use as part of a larger unit on sculpture or DIY vinyl art toys, or even as an introductory "self-portrait" lesson. Imagine a whole group of these figures on display in a case or on a bookshelf! Science meets art in these amazing Alexander Calder Art Projects for Kids! Play with lines, shapes and colors to make beautiful sculptures and paintings! "To an engineer, good enough means perfect. With an artist, there's no such thing as perfect." When you think of artists, we think of slightly eccentric souls, wandering along lakes or forests with their art materials, trying to capture that elusive sun beam or bloom. The last think you'd expect is an artist who's gone and studied something as practical as mechanical engineering! But that's Alexander Calder, American artist. He's not one to fit into any kind of mould, and his works of art aren't just hung up on a wall or standing on a pedestal - they actually move! Now you see how the engineering part fits in! What you see here is Calder's famous work, the 'Cirque Calder' or Calder Circus. What you don't see here is that all the parts of this circus can move - from the performers to the animals. And that is exactly what makes Calder's work so special and unique. He was also a man of many talents; along with sculpting and painting, he also designed jewelry, rugs, tapestries and sets - he even painted an entire airplane! Alexander, or Sandy, was from a family of artists. His father and grandfather were sculptors and his mother a portrait artist. Young Sandy's first sculpture was a clay elephant, when he was four years old. He started out making jewelry for his sister's dolls and then went on to design jewelry for other well known artists and their families - Joan Miro, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marcel Duchamp, Marc Chagall and Peggy Guggenheim. With 22nd July being Calder's birthday, we think it's the perfect time to introduce kids to this amazing artist and his works, with some fun and simple Alexander Calder art projects for kids.
This sculpture was made from reclaimed books that would have otherwise been thrown away. But look! They can have a second life...as something utterly captivating. What could be better than having your favorite stories immortalized forever and hanging on your wall? What if the words that helped define and shape your life could be forever felt with their essence locked into a sculpture? When you install this artwork in your home...people will gravitate towards it. Is it fabric? Is it water? Woodland mushrooms? What IS it? They'll want to touch it, to make sure it is real. No one has ever seen anything like it. What is that I see? Beethoven? Handel? Kayne? Is that a handwritten note on a page? Its the most amazing thing to look at from afar as well as up close. This piece was roughly 4 feet high x 4 feet wide. The interior is comprised of various different sizes of books, between 5.5" all the way down to 2" inches depth and was created for a specific place in the client's home in Chicago. You may send me the dimensions you would prefer. All sculptures are custom created. I incorporated books that represented her family: music! I can use your old books or look for specific titles as well. This buyer wanted a square-ish sculpture. Each page is folded, tipped, quilled, wrapped, rolled, pulled by my two hands, for a very intricate unique, artist-led design. Your artwork's patterns and layers will emerge organically and will be incomparable to any other sculpture I create or anything that can be bought elsewhere.
