The giant leopard moth (Hypercompe scribonia) is also known Ecpantheria scribonia, Eyed tiger moth, Phalaena scribonia . They can be found between April and September across fields, meadows, and forest edges of North America from southern Ontario, and southern and eastern United States through New England, Mexico and down to Panama and Colombia. Adult moths are strictly nocturnal and do not generally fly before nightfall. When handled or threatened, it may release drops of foul-tasting yellow fluid from its thorax to ward off predators.
