nif-ty; adjective (ti-er, ti-est) informal, fashionable, stylish: a nifty quilt!
I've seen a fair amount of pretty trips around the world quilts lately. Bonnie has a tutorial for this classic pattern. (Would love to share more links of the inspiration quilts, but I am struggling to link in this blogspot version, not allowed to paste the web adresse- any advise is most welcome...) This will be another string quilt for someone special, making it quite colorful. First step was to cut lots of 2.5" strips around 17" to 18" long from stash. And then grouping them in pairs of 6. Usually I set up a few design rules for myself when making a quilt. I use this as a starting point and may change them later in the process. For scrappy quilts with lots of variation I find this quite helpful. I based my This Scrappy trips around the World on these rules: each block is a combination of several colors each block uses the darkest value strip for the diagonal there's a limited color palette (pink, purple, aqua, yellow and orange) It's always exiting to see how the blocks turn out, and there is always lessons to learn from trying out a new pattern or a new combination of colors. Some of my first blocks didn't have enough contrast in value, so they were put aside. I included a few very light fabrics to expand the contrast in value. I think this pattern ask for quite a bit of contrast (Both dark, medium and lighter colors.) This is a fun pattern to make. The worst part was cutting the 2.5" strips. The blocks themselves are quite quick to put together. The trick is in the ironing... My design wall (just a big piece of batting) is behind the table with my sewing machine. There was a lot of moving the blocks around to find the best layout. The finished top is 60" by 72". These strips made a small dent in my stash, and the bonus is the leftover strips waiting for the next string quilt. Which might be a new spiderweb.... ; ) Wish you all a good weekend, hopefully with some happy stitching. Or stashing... ; )

Today I'm sharing my second Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt. The first scrappy trip quilt was so fun to make that I couldn't resist making another! This time I used all cotton and steel fabrics from various lines in blues, aqua's and yellows. I made 30 blocks using Bonnie from Quiltville's tutorial to make

My Cal-King Scrappy Trip Along. (81) 12" blocks 108" square Made with nothing by scraps and fabric from my stash. Nothing was purchased to make this quilt, using about 22 yards of fabric for the top, backing, and binding. Quilting by Krista Withers (lolablueocean)
I had so much fun making this scrappytripalong! The only rule I tried to follow was that a red fabric went down the diagonal. When I did my layout of blocks I made sure that three red corners met always...so much fun! Barb Raisbeck of Quilts by Barb quilted it. When we first arrived at Rae Ann's cabin, we all had stacks of of our own quilt projects that we were anxious to work on. Having an entire week, we felt the excitement of no interruptions, and could feel the possibilities of making great progress on quilts we were longing to get to. Within a day that all changed. Jackie sat quietly at her table, working away, cutting strips of Civil War fabrics. Within a few hours she had made her first star. Call it Quilters ADD. Call it whatever you want. By day 2 none of us could concentrate on our own quilts, and we began hovering over Jackie's work station, coveting her quilt in progress. Judi represented us all when she said "I'm in such big trouble. Now I have to make what Jackie is making." What caused all the stir? All Stars from American Jane's book Quilts for All Seasons. This is Sandy Klop's version We all fell in love! As we came down the stairs each morning, we could see new stars being added to Jackie's design wall. She will make a total of 18 whole and 4 half stars. I have always thought of Civil War fabrics as dull and subdued. Jackie's collection was quite colorful, where the fabrics played beautifully together. I especially liked the orange star. Jackie was so patient with all of our questions, and began giving us tutorials on how to make the stars. She even began sharing her fabrics with the rest of us. Our other projects were set aside. Even though it was snowing, with the thermometer registering 17-degrees, we made a trip to the local quilt store in Afton where the ladies purchased more fabrics so they could continue to sew more stars. These 3 are Rae Ann's. But, Quilters ADD can work both ways. Jackie saw me working on my Scrappy Trips Around The World blocks from Bonnie Hunter. With left over scraps from her Civil War fabrics, I showed Jackie how easy it is to follow Bonnie's tutorial. Towards the end of the week, the Stars were left behind and Scrappy Trips became the new focus. We had a great laugh at our flip flop attention spans. Even though most of us did not finish what we came to do, we all commented on how much fun we had, and how much we learned from each other. Retreats are like that.
Here she is, all 64 blocks and 96" square! She's the largest quilt I've ever made. It's made from Bonnie Hunter's excellent...

For some longarm quilters our tendency is to quilt the heck out of it. Yet often all that a quilt really needs is a flowing design to add texture and movement without overwhelming the quilt. This quilt was made by Amanda in Katie's value class. I was instantly in love with the quilt and knew that to make this quilt shine without overwhelming the stunning overall design that a simple swirls pattern would be perfect. Amanda's Value Quilt I have quilted this digital swirls pattern on many quilts now and it always seems to work, the quilt stays soft and cozy and is never stiff. Baptist fans have the same overall effect but with a slightly more traditional twist. Now it would be silly for me to say that I don't like a lot of quilting because obviously I do and when Michelle sent me this beauty with her only instructions being, I want it custom and do "whatever", I couldn't resist. I love the traditional look of the orange peel design which is perfect for a quilt with a lot of squares.I added some very big swirls some maze here and there and I even squeezed a moon in there. Michelle's scrappytripalong Speaking of Moons, when Cindy brought me her peace quilt I immediately thought I needed to add a moon. I am a bit crescent moon obsessed. Cindy's Peace Sign Quilt What about the Maze I was talking about? Well, I have another digital pattern that I have grown to know and love, it is an on point maze and like the swirls it looks good on anything. It adds the same texture and movement yet the quilt retains the supple soft quality. We chose it for Penny's drop dead gorgeous snowball quilt. Penny's Snowball Quilt Penny's snowball Quilt Thanks for taking the time to stop by. Happy Sunday!

Finished my Scrappy Trip Along Quilt January 2015 - in love!!
blogged - imagingermonkey.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/scrappy-trips.html
Hi friends! I've been busy working away on my scrappy trips quilt along since the beginning of the month. I wanted to jump into this project as I thought it would be a great way to start the year with a fun quilty project :) hopefully it will be the start of a productive year to come! I have lots of plans for the year, and one of my personal goals is to find some more time for quilt making and actual sewing! We all know it can be hard to squeeze in the time and motivation after a long day's work but I'm trying to be more organised with myself this year; less Pinterest, more doing perhaps ;) p.s. this is my house!! I'm completely in love with this quilt and I'm really pleased I jumped on the bandwagon to join in the fun. I would never have had the motivation to complete all 36 blocks if it wasn't in a quilt-a-long with hundreds of other quilters across the world! The Instagram buzz it created has been amazing! and I've spent far too long nosing round the #scrappytripalong photo's... I cut into loads of my stash, and used up lots of scraps too! It's a real mix of lots of my favourite prints, no real plan of design layout - except I had to use a white print in each block, as I like my quilts with white!! :) I hope you're all having an enjoyable start to the week! Jessie, xo p.s. Don't forget I'm in the middle of having my BIG new year sale at Sew and Quilt, with fabric's up to 40% off until 31st Jan , a perfect excuse to stock up on scrappy trips fabric!! :)
All done and I was finally able to get far enough away from it to get a picture without the flash washing it out. This is vibrant! My machine has a new belt, after only two trips to the quilt shop to get different belts, bring them home and try them. I had to reposition the motor a bit, but all seems to be working fine now, so I'm happy! Pictures and comments on this top are in Piecing 2011 Set 2. I need to make a new Set for this year!

i fell in love with this quilt the second i saw it. i was also really inspired by this one. i really wanted one of each, but the idea of actually making one of each was a wee bit unrealistic. and still i could not decide which one to make. so . . . i decided to mash up the two into a Steps to the Altar-Trip Around the World hybrid. and here is what was born. i must say that i heart it in all of its scrappy, patchwork-y glory! not to mention it's huge! i think it ended up being 96" x 108". and i might still add another row to the bottom to make it an even 108" x 108". #1 of several to come using nothing but scraps + strips. i'm curious to see how many quilt tops i can eke out of the fabric i have on hand.
I have been quieter the last few weeks, slower too. I had debated on resting a longer while from blog posting and not really starting a...
