This is a guide about making yo yo pattern weights. Rather than pinning their pattern pieces to the fabric some crafters prefer to use pattern weights.
These DIY pattern weights make it so much easier to cut fabric from a sewing pattern. The pattern won't move around so you can cut it out more easily. #sewing

I'm super excited to share our newest scrap project today – these cute little pattern weights! These are really useful to have around your sewing space. You can use them to weight your pattern when tracing it off onto your fabric, or use them if you're into tracing your patterns off rather than cutting them. I came up with the idea for these a few months before the pandemic started because, while I have cloth weights at work, I wanted something at home that didn't take up as much space and I was tired of raiding the kitchen for canned goods to use as weights. The flat base and cone shape of these weights keeps them stable while you work, and the tab at the top makes them easy to pick up and transport. Follow our tutorial below to make your own set of pattern weights! The pattern is available in our shop, and if you subscribe to our newsletter you can use your code to get the pattern for free! If you're not currently getting to our newsletter and would like to, you can enter your email in the footer of our website to subscribe. Supplies You'll have most of the items needed for this project around your sewing space already. The only thing I needed to purchase was the weighted fill, the scraps and tools I already had! Must Have Supplies Pattern Weights Pattern: You can download this in our shop here. The pattern is free for newsletter subscribers. Heavy-weight Fabric Scraps: I used a combination of Erin Dollar and Rifle Paper Co 6oz canvas scraps. This is a great weight because it's heavy enough it will stand up to use, but is still easy to sew at your machine. Interfacing: Because these are going to get a lot of use and be filled to the brim, we recommend fusing your fabric before you cut. I used a mid-weight tricot fusible because that's what I had scraps of laying around. Scissors: You'll need paper and fabric scissors for this. Or if you're a rotary person, that works too! Tracing Tool: I used a #2 pencil but any tracing utensil will work great for this. Needles: Both hand and machine needles are needed to complete this project. Match your machine needle to the weight of fabric you used. I used 12/80 needles for mine. Any hand sewing needles will work just great. Pins: Again, anything you have laying around is perfect. Thread: I used regular 100% poly thread in a color that matched my fabric. Fill: For my weights I used these heavy-weight poly pellets. You'll need just under 1/4

Happy Thursday! Today I want to share two new pincushions I made recently. My friend Amanda Jean embarked on a pincushion challenge this past Summer, making at least one each day for a month! She had so many fun designs, she compiled two patterns, each with five pincushion designs: Plenty of Pincushions Volume 1 + Plenty of Pincushions Volume 2. When I sat down to make a few from my scraps, I chose a pincushion from each volume. I've loved and collected pincushions for many years. They're one of my favorite things to make and they're fun to receive as gifts too. There are just so many things to love about them. Pincushions are a great way to use up scraps, try a new block, or use up leftover blocks/units from other projects. Since they are small, they aren't usually a huge time commitment which is nice when you're in the mood for an instant gratification project. Plus, they're cute! This is part of my pincushion collection. I probably have enough that aren't in this photo to fill another shelf (my Dad helped me make this one a few years ago). It's right above my machine, so I look at it a lot, and it makes me happy. Now, back to those two new pincushions! Looking for pincushion tutorials? I have a few in the archives: Hexagon Ring Pincushion Tutorial, Triangular Log Cabin Pincushion Tutorial, and Half-Square Triangle Pincushion Tutorial. From Plenty of Pincushions Volume 1, I decided to make the pineapple pincushion. I love pineapple blocks, and this tiny version is just too cute. Bonus, it's paper pieced! I started with the little frog center piece, and went with a purple theme (shocking, I know). This one is definitely my favorite of the two because these are my very favorite shades of purple, and consequently some favorite fabrics too. From Plenty of Pincushions Volume 2, I decided to make the log cabin pincushion. I'm on a bit of a log cabin kick lately, and I had lots of strip scraps so it seemed like a good fit. This block is also paper pieced, which is nice and easy for working with those little pieces. These scraps came from my last two monochromatic quilts: All Blue Woven Quilt + Heart Crossed Quilt. There is also a little pop of citron green on the back. Both pincushions have quilting on the front, and are filled with crushed walnuts shells.

But there are only so many socks and blankets that one can knit. After staring at my luscious stash of bright, spring colors I created this delectable shawl. It’s such a simple and addicting knit, with color changes happening however you desire. It’s like painting with your yarn! By increasing on one edge every row and decreasing on the other edge every two rows, you get a wonderful, bias, garter shawl that makes a really fun asymetrical triangle shape. When choosing colors, keep in mind that the earlier rows in your shawl are much shorter so will take less yarn for the same width stripes. Best results are achieved in staggering the width of your stripes to appear random for that scrappy look. Pattern size can be changed by simply using fewer or more pattern repeats. Adjust yarn quantities based on the size you want. NOTE: I’ve just uploaded a corrected version of this pattern. It originally read: Row 1 (RS): k1, kfb, to the end of the row. It should have read: Row 1 (RS): k1, kfb, KNIT to the end of the row.
