This has been a good week for pulling out the sunny yellow scraps to use in my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects. We had some gorgeous, warm days mid-week, including a high of 80 degrees on Thursday! The beautiful yellow scraps are a good match for the daffodils that are popping up all over the neighborhood. My yellow blocks include this week's Tiny Tuesday blocks. As usual, somehow I ended up with one extra. They are so little and cute, plus quick and easy--I couldn't resist! My other yellow blocks for the week are the first four Stair Steps blocks. The pieces have been cut to make four more over the weekend. I received an email last week asking about the pattern I am using for the Stair Steps blocks. I don't have a real pattern, just figured out my own from seeing similar blocks here and there. Here are the cutting directions for one 6" block: Black-on-white print: Cut 6 squares @ 1.5" Grey and black prints: cut one each 1.5" x 1.5" 1.5" x 2.5" 1.5" x 3.5" 1.5" x 4.5" 1.5" x 5.5" Cut the same sizes from the yellow (or color of your choice) fabrics as you just cut from the black and grey fabrics. I am linking up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge on Saturday and with Oh Scrap! at Quilting is more fun than Housework on Sunday. Be sure to check out all of the wonderful projects that everyone is sharing! Julie in GA
Good morning Scrappers! Today marks Week 6 and the final Scrap Elimination blog of the summer. It has been a busy summer making fun projects out of my scraps and I love the results. This last one is perhaps my favorite, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. This week we are going to be using up 1 1/2" strips. You could also make this project with 2 1/2" strips, you're block would just have larger strips. Here's what you will need to get started! Materials:1 1/2" strips at least 7" long

Finishing this quilt was number 1 on my crafting to-do list for 2019, and I had a lot of fun making it. The blocks from my hivemates were all beautiful, and I made a few more to make this quilt the size I wanted. I'm participating in Stashbee again this year, and I'm having fun working on my bee blocks. I'm not Queen until November, so I have time to think up another block for my 2019 Stashbee quilt. I quilted it in straight lines about 1/2" apart, and bound it with a bright teal. I'm very happy with how my "Improv Spinners and Hourglasses" (I couldn't think of a better name) quilt turned out. I'm smiling behind the quilt. :)
Binding Tutorial Posts Perfect Binding Basics Post #1 Binding Flange Basics Post #2 - Bias Binding How to bind curves Basics Post #3 - Scrappy Bias Binding How to bind 120° angles Single Fold Binding (for mini quilts & small projects) What do you want to know about binding? Binding Basics Post #3 Above you'll find all the links to previous binding posts. Included in this Post - How to make a scrappy bias binding from leftover pre-cut strips Up next... how to bind curves! -- Have you ever needed to make a bias binding but you don't have enough fabric? I needed to make a bias binding but the only thing I had left that matched was a few jelly roll strips. Now if my project didn't have curves I could have just pieced them together, but since I needed a bias binding I had to come up with another solution. 1. Start by figuring out how many strips you'll need to make your binding. Determine the length of binding you'll need to go around your project. Then follow the formula below/ Binding Length / 40 = X X + 1 = # of strips you need. For my project I used 5 leftover jelly roll strips. 2. Sew the strips together with a 1/4" seam and press open. Offset each strip by approximately 2" to avoid waste in cutting. 3. Use the 45° angle on your ruler to trim the ends off of the strip set. If your ruler doesn't have a 45° angle you can use the marks on your cutting mat. 4. Turn the strip around and begin cutting your binding. I cut my strips at 2.25" wide. 5. Continue cutting along the entire strip. 6. Match the ends and sew them with a 1/4" seam. More details are in post #1. Press the seams open. Repeat to create one long strip. 7. Press the strip in half WST to finish the binding. 9. Roll the binding up until you are ready to use it. This method can also be used with leftover bias binding strips of any length. Make sure the scraps are the same width & piece the ends together as shown in step #6. If some strips are longer & you want a scrappier look, cut them into multiple pieces or create a small strip set as shown in step #2 Coming up next I'll show you how to apply this binding to inner and outer curves. © 2011-2022 Julie R. Good Morning Scrappers and welcome to Week 4! This is a project I have been eager to share with you and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It has been hot, hot, HOT in Tucson, so I have been happily sewing away in the studio, diligently avoiding the heat and making new things for you. Good morning, friends! Nicole here with a cute flip book album I created using the Say Cheese Classic Mouse collection. I adore this album so much and I hope you do, too. I went back and forth on how I wanted to use this adorable collection, and in the end, I decided to create a mini album using photos of me with my fur-baby! The foam stickers are too cute, and I really wanted to use the big “SMILE” title along with the “this floats my boat” stickers. I decided to use it behind the first page to act as another sub-title for the album. I love how simple this page is, but it looks so cute! And those cute little brads…I can’t get enough of them! The journaling cards are super fun, and I used quite a few of them throughout the album. They are great for creating a cute statement page. I added a few decorative brads and a sticker to embellish the page. For this spread, I layered a variety of die cuts to the left-side of the photo along with a few stickers and decorative brads. As you can see, these albums come together quickly! The journaling cards cut-apart sheet is adorable. I just love using them to fill in white space. I add a few stickers and journaling to make it fun. I folded two 4x6 journaling cards together to create a flip page. Rather than tuck this flip page in a plastic sleeve, I mounted it directly to the sleeve itself to create a pocket for hidden journaling cards. I stapled a little journaling spot on the card to create a flip element and decorated it with die cuts, foam stickers, and a decorative brad. I still need to add a little journaling, but I plan on adding a few more pages to this darling album before calling it done. I used a metal die to create a folded tag element to the right-side of the photo. I especially love the chipboard piece and decided to use it as a center piece for the tag. My goal for this album was to create lots of interactive pages and tag elements to go with the cuteness of this album. I created a little pocket for the tag. To create this flip page, I cut two 3x4 journaling tags together and folded it to create the flip page. I mounted one side to the page, leaving the other side unmounted so it flips open. This layout was fun… I used a variety of rub-ons for the background and then created a variety of layers using die cuts and foam stickers. What do you think? It’s cute, right!? Are you ready to make one of these using pictures of your fur-baby? I hope you found this inspiring. Check out the full collection, here. Thank you so much for visiting today! I was a busy girl last week. I'm dealing with my fair share (or more) of health issues, so that takes up quite a bit of my time. Add in my five little learners and I'm a busy girl. And sleep. I like sleep. But being organized has allowed me to get some things done, and that makes this mama happy! My goals last week: Complete the bodies of my 5 Hobbes softies - didn't happen Piece some quilt backs (oooh, how exciting!) - DONE! Piece Valentine's Mini - didn't happen Cut scraps. Lots of scraps - didn't happen I'm struggling with the scraps. I started pressing the pieces of fabric, and while I'm pressing them I'm thinking of the doll clothes I could make with them, or little zipper bags, or . . . . So the scraps didn't get cut. I'm sorry to disappoint, but I just don't have it in me. I'm thinking if it's something very specific, like this apple quilt: Something manageable, but still using up at least my red, pink, green, orange (a smidge) and grey (or black and white) scraps. It might make a dent. Or maybe a strawberry quilt? (Scrappy Strawberry quilt from Farm Girl Vintage) (Strawberry Social quilt found here at Tamarack Shack) I'll get right on it, right? So here's what I'll get done this week, I hope: Sew Valentine's Pillows Cut fabric for new quilt patterns Cut Feed Co. Weekender stuff Work on Valentine's Mini And anything else I can think of. Probably going to sort out my red, pink and green scraps so I can get started on one of these cute quilts.

There was no way I was going to make samples for the Erica Quilt without making a scrappy, rainbow version. This pattern is great for scraps in general, but it is especially good for making a scrappy rainbow. My only debate was what to do with the background fabric for this quilt. I could have used a solid, but I was t
Edited to add : I'm activating comments moderation, I hate to do this but seems like spam is on the high side today. Bear with me! *hugs* Thank you! The Neverland kits are so delightful my only regret is not being able to churn out more layouts. I wish I can, but I take so long on each one of them that it is just not possible! :) This time, I finished my last layout just in time for photographing and uploading to the site before our deadline. Cutting it really close! LOL. Here we go . . . But I Love You Instead of using the mask for misting, I used it as a template handstitching. Then I roughly cut patterned paper to fill in some of the spaces inside, no exact measurement, eyeballing rocks! ~ Worked out great! There is a story behind this layout, too personal for me to share here, It still hurts even after so many years. I'm sorry. Maybe one day I will be able to, just not now :) So Glad I mixed First Kiss and White Mister Huey for the background, with a splash of Taxi, Shine and Honor Society. Loving the marbled effect. Multi colored stitching - I love colors can you tell? :) I love how the Amy T rub ons look like pencil drawing! blessing for those who can't draw e.g me! :) So Glad you have him - a layout for Nidhi. She's very close to my father as you can see. I'm thankful for that, I'm glad she has him. I wasn't close to my dad when I was younger (because I was very naughty, what's new? haha!), so to witness their relationship is something special to me. :) Memo Make today awesome! :) I love that veneer card! I cut it apart and saved the smiley face for another layout. In its place, I added the 'hello love' flair, and stitched an arrow underneath the caption. It's doable, you can totally handstitch on veneer. This one is pulling double duty as I'm stitching that piece straight onto the background as an 'insurance' just in case my adhesive can't hold it down. :) To The Moon & Back 7 hours? Maybe around there, I stopped keeping track after 5. LOL. It was a blissful 7 hours stitching on that piece of paper! I printed the digital stamp (with super faint lines) as my guide, dropped some colors of Mister Hueys, then I pierced and stitch them all with two ply of DMC embroidery thread. Days Like These The DT is lifting each other this month! :) I lifted this layout by Shanna. :) Almost exact lift, no? :) Shanna used the negatives of the silhouette cut, I used the positive! :) Do you notice the background? I flipped over my starburst mask and stamp it onto this piece of white cardstock after I misted the background for my 'Memo' layout in Neverland gallery. Win-win! :) Champion Presenting ~ my mama, the angry birds champion!! LOL :) My Kraft mat is getting a workout this month eh? Sprayed some mist and lay my cardstock (lightly) on top to get some colors. I had no control over the outcome, that's the exciting part! :D The 'S' from Angry Birds is missing! Where is it??!! I must fix that! FYI - my mama really does play Angry BIrds! LOL. Calm Sea I cropped my photo into a circle. Old School? Yes? heeehee!! Love it anyway! I also punched out some butterflies from the vellum speech bubble in Wendy, and added stitching as border for the photo and lines on top of the punched out circles. had so much fun with the Mist Droppers - the splatters make me happy! Oh My! oh my goodness! *sigh* I love it when she asks to sleep with me. LOL. not everyday of course, but when she does.. my heart feels like it's about to burst! :D This is another 'negative' misting work page. The yellow mist was left on the kraft mat after I did my 'Champion' layout' - so I took another piece of cardstock to soak it up. Voila, I thought it look like a butterfly, A HUGE ONE! So I *roughly* measured the abstract butterfly, and cut a butterfly on my cameo and use that as my stitching guide. Love love love unplanned misting happiness like this! If you're still here, thank you so much! Please, get in touch if you need to ask about anything. :) xoxo

I'm so delighted with this week's project! It was fast and fun, cut and finished in a weekend. In fact, I liked it so much I'm already planning to make it again in cool colors. This time around, we'll be looking at working with small left overs that can be cut to the same width (in this case 2 1/2"). Because we're working with a very diverse pile of warm temperature scraps, I'm going to introduce a solid fabric to unify the scraps and create a visual resting space. Cutting for 1 block (Fin
It's the first day of summer and here in Arizona and it is HOT, HOT, HOT! It's definitely time to hole up in my studio and make new things until cooler weather is with us again. This year I got back from my latest trip and started studio clean up. Usually that process begins with putting away my scraps from recent projects, but this time I was confronted with this image. What a wreck! Not only can I not find anything in my scrap drawers, but I also can't fit any more in those drawers. As yo
