This concept is crucially important in digitizing photos , whether you will use them in a life story project or just to protect and share them. And yet proper scanning seems to be the hardest thing to explain to our clients and students. So here's my attempt at a real-live infographic to
Some time ago I made ancestor cards as a tool to teach family about our ancestors. Here are two of the cards.
i participated in the happy little moments class at studio calico a few months ago. it was amazing. i have made my fair share of mini albums over the years, but i had never altered an older book. i loved every bit of it. and it's one of my favorite books to date. it's just so pretty. i finished the book during the class, but i struggled with the cover. i think i always struggle with the covers for some reason. it's just so "permanent" if that makes any sense??? finally i took the plunge and decided simpler is better. i covered it with some of my favorite dear lizzy paper, a doily and a title. i used some canvas along the spine to make it look more "book" like. have you ever altered a book? my favorite part is all of the little bits and pieces sticking out of the sides!! fingers crossed that studio calico will have another happy little moments class in the future!! :)

This month the Genealogy Challenge I'm issuing is to create a tribute page to one ancestor. What I mean by that is - pick an ancestor and write your memories of that person. Maybe that would be your grandmother or grandfather. Or perhaps your grandmother told you stories of her mom so even though you didn't personally know her, you do know stories about her. The tribute is not dry facts such as where the person was during each census year. It's not about those facts we find when we are researching. It's about your memories, both the good and the bad! My suggestion is you keep your Ancestor Tribute to one page double-sided if you want to write a lot, or just one side. It doesn't take long - you just let the words flow and it doesn't have to be in chronological order. It's just your thoughts and memories coming out quickly. I wrote one and it went so fast that I wrote several others! I got a little fancy with a few and added photos but I kept my Ancestor Tributes to one page. I'm really happy with them and plan to do more and put them into a little coil-bound "book" to share with my siblings. Ancestor Tribute page for my great-grandmother. I never knew her but my grandmother and my aunts told me many stories so I was able to write a page about her. The Ancestor Tribute pages are memories. They might not be accurate. They might be lies, half-truths or misunderstood or half-remembered information. But they have value as they bring the ancestor to life. Did you hear that Grandpa Joe made dandelion wine? Write it down in his Tribute page! Did Grandma make silly faces at the table? Did you overhear her telling a story about her mother? Write it all down. My grandfather died before I was born but my Tribute page is based on things my father, Uncle Clare and my mom and aunt told me. And now I'm off to write a few more. I hope you'll take a half hour and write at least one Ancestor Tribute page this month. If you enjoy it, write more! Share them with family.
I don't know how winter has been everyone else out there, but here in Canada it has been extremely cold and snowy this year! I for one am soooo ready for Spring to make an appearance! So to warm myself up a little I thought I'd work on a summery photo. This is a photo I took a few years back of my oldest daughter when we were taking a summer vacation near Sable Falls in (Northern) Ontario. I've recently been putting together a color inspiration board for myself on Pinterest and I find one of my favourite color combinations is purples with greens, but I'm particularly fond of the these colors in soft smokey tones. So for this page I reached for some of the soft smokey plums in the Maja Design, 'Ska vi ta en Fika' collection and mixed it with some taupey grey and soft green from the Vintage Summer basics colleciton. I wanted to add some 'lush' greenery to the page so I matted behind the photo with some green paper from the Life In the Country paper collection (Sowing Seeds-bs), and added a new vine chipboard design from Dusty Attic called 'Ivy Corners' adding a few Dusty Attic purple roses in as well. I just love to add vintage style embellishments to my Maja Design layouts because the beautiful papers lend themselves so well to these types of embellishments, like vintage lace (from Tresors de Luxe), Natural floral accents (also from Tresors de luxe), chipboard designs (Skelleton clock and flourishes, from Dusty Attic Designs) and the Flowers are from a tin of blooms from Recollections. Clocks are one of those design elements that I feel work with almost any page. So again on this page I've added in some of my favourite clock designs from the Vintage Autumn Basics collection (XVI). When I get my Maja Design collections, I love to fan out the papers and enjoy how the different patterns and designs look against each other. I always want to share these pretty designs in a unique and fun way, ....here I was able to do this using a new chipboard by Dusty Attic called 'Geometric' border. I glued a small sampling of a few of the patterned papers behind the small square designs. And nope, that is not my handwriting you see above (I wish!), it's a little bit of rub-on I have from some old Daisy D's rub-ons I still have in my stash ....yep, still trying to add a bit of my older stash on each page :) Maja Design Papers used in this project: Ska vi ta en Fika (Söders höjder - bs, En Kopp te-bs, Chaite-bs, Favoriter-bs), Life In the Country (Sowing Seeds), Vintage Summer Basics (1932-bs), Vintage Autumn Basics (XVI). Note: I often get email from my blog readers looking for good sources for Maja Design products and Dusty Attic chipboard. Hey everyone Am sure by now you will have heard of Imy & Kate's Facebook group, 30 Days of Lists. Every month a selected person will produce a list of 30 or 31 topics for us to write about. This is open to all Philofaxy users and gives some of us, another excuse to get a Filofax. lol So the big question is, which Filofax are you going to use for this project? First I was going to use my daily Personal Holborn, but it's heavy enough in my handbag without adding more pages, so I decided to use my A5 Finchley.....I am really loving this Filofax right now, it's so soft and supple but firm at the same time. I am using it as my 365 Day Journal at the moment and I think, I can just about squeeze a few more pages in there. The pretty divider on the left is a home made divider to separate the Journal from the Lists. I've printed the September List onto card and added a September sticker (similar to the ones I made here ) to the tab. Hopefully you can see the list, but if you can't, you can find it on the Facebook page. Next question was, do I use a full page for each day? Well that would be ideal but the A5 Finchley only comes with 25mm rings and they are pretty full up all ready, I really needed to keep this to a minimum, so I created this layout, I can now get 4 days to a sheet instead of 2. I don't use stickers that much in my Filofax, even though I have a small mountain of them, so I thought, this is a fun project, why not add some fun stickers! Notice I haven't put numbers down the sides of the paper, this is so I can use different styles styles, ie..huge bubble letters if the list is small or tiny writing if the list is longer, maybe even use different pens, ie...chunky felt tips, crayons or even water colour paints....who knows! Really looking forward to getting started with this now though.....and I would love to see what Filofax you are using and what ideas you have come up with to write your own lists!

For me, my favorite Spring products are the beautiful botanicals/florals in the Websters Pages patterned papers. I have to admit I always feel a little thrill when I know that Brandin O'Neill is at the drawing board working on a new collection. One thing I know is that there will always be gorgeous floral's in the collection papers, designs that are perfect for fussy cutting and embellishing with. For me, that collection this time around was 'Growing Up Girl'....I actually used 7 papers for this page! It's been a super snowy and cold winter here in Canada this year so I am really looking forward to Spring! So I wanted this layout to be all about the warmth and happiness of Spring. It's a time to get back into shape, get outdoors, exercise and just breathe! ....I did lots of fussy cutting of the many beautiful floral images in the patterned papers. It was March break here in Canada, the kids are off school so when I sat down one night (watching Elementary on TV) and began cutting out images from the 'Embrace Life' and 'Make a Wish' papers, my daughter Chloe couldn't resist picking up a pair of scissors and joining me in clipping out all the pretty designs. Chloe's favorite was that little pink and white butterfly (above). I love the freshness polka dots add to a Spring layout, so I used the dotted side of the 'See the World' paper, tearing of little snippits of the paper and used it as a edger for my page design. I just love that big large cabbage rose image as well, with thelittle green/white/rose color hydrangeas! I'm trying to get myself to journal a little more on my pages. So for this page I just handwrote a few key ideas on one of the patterned papers, matted with the pink paper and stacked the words. (the locket is another sweet image I cut out from the patterned papers). The love arrow is a new design from Dusty Attic Designs (as is the swirly vine design beside it). The flower is a random loose bloom I had lying around in my stash from an old Recollections pack, and the twine is from a Websters Pages 'Quick Pix' packet. The cute li'l light bulb design is a paper clip from the 'Sprinkled with Love ' collection from Websters Pages. Websters Pages Supplies used on this project: Patterned Paper: Growing Up Girl (Embrace Life-both sides, Make a Wish, See the World, Express Yourself, Honor Yourself, Dress to Impress, Live Out Loud-background paper) Embellishments: Sprinkled with Love (Light bulb Paperclips) Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today, I really appreciated all the lovely feedback!

I have been playing at the moment using these beautiful Bezels I have on my website for sale they are from Objects and Elements and I must say I have fallen in love with them. I have been busy and had my wonderful Girlfriend Sarah come to visit from Darwin and play we did. Sarah gave me this wonderful book below for my birthday I just LOVE it to bits, it does have a sealed section in it? Yes with wonderful LiL pictures of our many adventures together. Well I’m off to the good Old USA this Wednesday for two weeks to visit with my chosen Sister Linda, in Idaho; we met over the internet many years ago and share our passion of art together. I nearly lost Linda Last year from an operation, so every time we are together is very special. Linda can’t travel to me because of health issues so I will travel to her. Look out sis your in for some trouble shopping and junking and creating.

It’s hard to ignore a statement like: “I am interested in the changing perspectives of the photographic medium, how images are viewed and understood through the technological advances in photography and the help and hindrances this begins forth into our contemporary culture.” It’s pretty clear from her statement that Melinda Gibson is looking at photography
