I have created these cards to assist in building basic vocabulary for animals that would fit into a farm theme. These cards cover some of the following information: Masculine, feminine and diminutives (cow, sheep, chicken, goose, horse, goat, pig) Collective nouns (cow, sheep, chicken, goose, horse, goat, pig) Basic products we get from the animal (cow, sheep, pig, goat, goose, chicken) These cards can be used in a variety of ways. Examples include Matching, sorting and memory games Reading & flashcards. Stick them back to back and bind them together with a metal ring. Children can use them to learn and test new vocabulary. I recommend printing these out on light card and laminating them for durability. I have created a set of posters that can be used together with these cards. Storytime STEAM with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! This preschool STEAM activity put a fun STEM twist on a classic story.
Awarded the AAAS/SUBARU SB&F PRIZE for EXCELLENCE in SCIENCE BOOKS and 5 other children's book awards! \"Three words. 3D. Printed beak. Oh come on, you aren't impressed? Well, check out the back matter on this book and you will be. It's insane!\" --School Library Journal Beauty and the Beak is the incredible true story about an injured wild bald eagle who received a pioneering, 3D-printed beak--and made world news! Follow Beauty close up and in photographs, from the moment she uses her baby beak to emerge from her egg, through her hunt when she uses her powerful adult beak to feed herself, to the day her beak is illegally shot off, leaving her helpless. This brave and uplifting story continues through her rescue, into the months of engineering her 3D-printed prosthetic beak and intense hours of her beak surgery, to the moment she takes the first drink of water by herself with her new beak. Beauty and the Beak captures the spirit and courage of this amazing bird and America's national symbol--whose species was nearly wiped out by human activity, only to be restored and thriving because of environmental conservation and human compassion. This book will resonate with those who have their own stories of other animals endangered or in need, and humans, from young children to military veterans, in need of prosthetic limbs, who are being given new lives with state-of-the-art devices. The book includes expanded information about bald eagles as a top predator species, their near extinction in most of the U.S., their successful reintroduction back into the wild, and efforts to conserve this critical raptor species today. BONUS! Bird QR app download developed with Cornell Lab for interactive features in the book!
Well, we knew this was going to happen. We were warned often enough but did we listen? Did we heed the warning given out in episodes of The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone or Black Mirror, innumerable B-movies and books from H. G. Wells to Stephen King? No, we thought we knew better. We were having way too much fun to even think about what we may be mortgaging for getting all those likes on Facebook and all those followers on Instagram and Twitter. We were only in it for the LOLz. Then one day, our life’s all used up and we’re part of the machine. It’s no fun anymore but still we can’t help checking our feed, tweeting our food and liking every fucking picture of a grumpy-looking cat. WE are the pod people sci-fi warned us about! Like OMG! Artist Kristian Jones produces neat illustrations of children and families whose lives have been taken over by the technology they use. His figures look like the characters once found in children’s stories who are now transported to a strange, surreal science-fiction land where technology snoops and insidiously steals away their very life force. Hi friends! I love being reflective about my teaching. I have been teaching for eleven years and each year is a new journey for me. I have learned to work smarter not harder and so many things have changed about my teaching. Today I wanted to share my passion with you guys and hopefully inspire you to incorporate it into your classroom. My passion is definitely 21st-century learning and providing our students with the inspiration and opportunities to explore and create through learning. I have had so many magic moments in my classroom this year and I can't wait to share them with you guys. Today I wanted to share how you can help your students create digital animated stories using Scratch. So your first question is probably ... WHAT IS SCRATCH? Scratch is a block style coding program that will allow your students to create their own interactive stories and games. There is a free online version of Scratch and also a free version that you can download onto your computer. You can find both versions HERE. I honestly did not know much about Scratch until a few years ago. I just dove into it and learned all that I know from trying different things and watching a ton of tutorial videos. But trust me friends ... your kids will pick it up quickly and they will be motivated and inspired to create new stories. Still unsure ... don't worry ... I've got you covered! I created a short video tutorial that you can show your students. The video will teach them how to create a short animated story in Scratch. They can watch it and re-watch it until they feel comfortable or you can watch it and then teach them. I have more tutorial videos coming soon. Did you use Scratch in your classroom? Let me know about it by leaving a comment below! Happy Scratching friends!
Well this week certainly flew by...it's time once again to link up with Kacey for Five for Friday! Here's how my week went down: You know it's May when your student busts out his recorder at carpool... ...and performs a flawless rendition of Mary Had a Little Lamb... ...using his nose. #talent One of my students walked in wearing a large, black winter coat yesterday morning (we live in South Florida). "Hey, buddy," I said. "Is there snow on the forecast I wasn't aware of?" "I felt like being a penguin today," he replied, pulling his hood on. This is the last chance to grab my Charlotte's Web Choice Board for free! I'm taking the Pinning Perfect e-course and I'm loving it so far! Who knew there was so much to learn about Pinterest? I'm only on the 2nd week and my mind is blown! I would definitely recommend this course to anyone and everyone. You can follow my Pinterest boards here! If the last 3 weeks of school move as quickly as this one did, well... #justsayin Have a great weekend, everyone! Don't forget to show some love to Doodle Bugs Teaching!
I love using QR codes to make my task cards more exciting and interesting. They are so easy to make and even easier to use.
Read-alouds are one of the best ways to introduce new concepts to students. By integrating stories in lessons, students are introduced to quality books. When students are exposed to engaging literature, it fosters a life-long love of reading. There are even greater benefits when these engaging
S.T.E.M. activities may seem daunting when teaching young children. This is a STEM activity that I created to go with the folk tale, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. I like to include literature, reading, and writing into my STEM activity so that I can incorporate it into my reading block if needed. ...
One of my favorite stories to share with my class is the classic story The Three Little Pigs(affiliate link). I love how my students are so into the repetition that they hear and reading it along. I usually do a full unit of the story since there are so many different activities that can be done. Students love reading their own little emergent reader. I focus on a sight word to make it easy and predictable for the students. We use that same sight word to make a little flip book. Students then copy the sentences that they made and read in their flip book. Students go back to the story to sequence events. I usually do a whole group sequencing pocket chart activity first. We practice our rhyming (a skill we can never get enough practice with) and listening for missing sounds. And an interactive Google Slides™rhyming activity where students drag and drop the check mark to identify if the words rhyme or not. We practice identifying element from the story and sort things that belong and in story and those that do not. And have fun with some The Little Pigs math. I do all of this and more with my students and then we move on to retelling and comparing different versions of the story. I recently discovered the story The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig (affiliate link)and it became one of my favorite alternative versions This story was perfect for hitting the kindergarten standard of comparing and contrasting. This standard is always pretty difficult for my students so I created this simple compare and contrast sort after finishing the stories. There are two different versions that allow for differentiation. One with pictures for students to sort and the other is more opened ended where students can write or draw their own pictures from the story. We had so much fun completing this sort that I wanted to share! You can grab The Three Little Pigs Activities And you can get The Three Wolves sort free here! The Three Little Pigs Venn Diagram I hope that you and your class enjoys this freebie!

In this cow pack I have created a variety of english and math activities that you can choose from to use with you students. The information covered is aimed at a 2nd and 3rd Grade level and helps to build the students vocabulary and knowledge within this theme, as well as practicing skills in English and mathematics. Where necessary, I have created duplicate worksheets to cover both spellings for North American English as well as British English. I have also included both color and B & W versions of the worksheets. There are 25 pages (25 pages color version and 25 Pages B & W version) This “cow pack” consists of the following Cow Poster: This can be printed out as a poster to be used in a classroom display or used as an information sheet to be given to your students. I would use this to begin a class or group discussion with my students. Two cow information worksheets: These worksheets cover most of the information from the poster as well as some extra information. They help build vocabulary and include activities and questions related to the information. Label the cow worksheet: The students need to cut out the labels and paste them in the correct space to label the cow. My idea for this activity is for students to label the cow and then create their own poster with the information they have learnt about cows. Mindmap worksheet: Students use words and pictures to create a mindmap with the information they have learnt about cows. There is a basic template to help the students get started. Encourage them to add any other knowledge they may have about cows. Template for writing sentences Spelling list with cow themed spelling words Crossword Story with a cow theme and 2 pages of questions and activities based on the story. Verbs worksheets with cow themed examples. Write your own story: There are four sheets to guide learners with simple planning of a story and then writing their own cow story. In the answers file I have included a basic writing assessment checklist for teachers to use in assessing the children’s writing. Word problem worksheet Graph and data worksheets You may be interest in other farm animal packs in my store Pig Pack Sheep Pack Horse Pack There are other farm themed resources in my store. Imagine you are stranded on an island with no knowledge of how you got there, surrounded by strange animals, weather, and terrain. The unusual part of this book isn't necessarily the story, but the main character, Roz. Why? Roz is a robot! The Wild Robot by Peter Brown hooks readers from the very first page. Your kids will be begging you, "just one more chapter, please?" and you may end up reading it to them, as the chapters are short enough to get that fix. When I read this book to my kids, it came alive for all of us and made me realize how well it would work to develop some hands-on STEM activities. I hope that you are as excited to try them out as we were! I may earn a small commission for my endorsement, recommendation, testimonial, and/or link to any products or services from this website. Your purchase helps support my work in bringing you downloads of value and information about educational resources. The link below is an Amazon affiliate link. You can read my full disclosure here. If you haven't read this book yet, you will definitely want to borrow or get a copy ASAP. It is a survival-themed book with endearing characters, tons of action, and contains a wonderful marriage of nature and technology. I cannot imagine a better book to get kids excited about STEM! As you read this book (or after you have finished), add in these hands-on STEM activities so your kids can really feel like they are in on the adventure, too. Start with a Robot STEM Challenge Can you build your very own Roz? Roz is born on the shore of an island, thanks to some playful otters. Use simple materials such as paper or card stock, or go big with cardboard boxes and aluminum foil! Once your kids have built their own robot, they will feel an even greater involvement in her life and the obstacles she must overcome. It isn't long before Roz is feeling left out. As you read the story, you will find out why the next two challenges make sense, but I'm not going to give away too many spoilers! Take my word for it that you'll want to try both of these STEM challenges as well: Camouflage for Roz It ends up being very important that Roz stumbles upon this idea. Can you help her blend into her surroundings? If you are reading this at home, ask your kids to decorate their robot to blend into your surroundings, maybe even using objects you find in nature. Design and create a prosthetic limb for Roz: Well, this one might not be too exciting at first. You will have to maim the robot you made in the first STEM challenge! I recommend cutting off the robot's foot, but your kids can choose to cut an arm instead, or perhaps another limb, depending on how they constructed their robot. There are several more challenges you can do throughout the story. It will become apparent as you read along - almost every time Roz has a problem to solve, you can work through a STEM challenge! Novel STEM for The Wild Robot For more supporting materials, I have created a full resource that guides you through the engineering design process to complete these challenges and more. In addition to the challenges listed above, there are engineering and science vocabulary cards, recording pages to work through the process, data testing sheets, discussion questions, and extension activities: Do you have a favorite read aloud that you'd like to see paired with STEM challenges? Suggest one to me at [email protected] - if I choose your idea I will send you the resource when it's finished as a thank you. You will definitely want to pair these STEM challenges with a Novel Study! Amy Mezni has created a wonderful Novel Study for the Wild Robot. This unit includes vocabulary and reading comprehension questions, as well as activities for character development, plot, setting, theme, and author's purpose. It's the perfect way to dive even further into this great book! Click the photo below to read Amy's blog post, which details what she thought about the book and some great ideas for using it in your upper elementary classroom: Pin These Ideas to Save them for Later:
