Let's be honest - there is only so much we can learn in our undergraduate courses, student teaching experiences, and alternative certification programs. At the end of the day, so much that I've learned about being a teacher, and teaching biology specifically, has been through trial and error. If we want to get fancy, we can call it "action research" in my own classroom, like my graduate professors referred to it.

Science Tool Speed Date also known as Visiting with Science Tools--this is a fun and hands on way to introduce students to science tools. They will spend 2-3 minutes with each tool completing a simple task, just like speed dating. (Don't worry, the term "speed date" is not included on any student pages.) This is also available with 5 other creative resources in: ★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆★ Science Tool Bundle!★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★ ☆★ Bundle Includes This Resource Plus: ☞ Science Tool Word Wall (with Assessment) ☞Science Tool Task Cards ☞Types of Scientists: I Have Who Has Card Game ☞Scientists and Their Tools Nonfiction Reading Cards ☞Science Tool Sort **Updated July 2020: compressed file and added link to editable Google slides version. How to Use: Set up science tools around your room with the table tent or the task card. Each card includes a simple task that should take 2-3 minutes. Have students rotate quickly through the stations as a fun way to speed date or be introduced to the science tools. You can have students take the recording sheet around with them to record a quick, 1-sentence summary of what they did and then determine if the tool was used to observe, measure, or other. Which Tools Do I Use? In this pack, I included 18, but it is not necessary to do all 18. Just use the ones that you have, and don’t feel the need to go out and purchase additional tools. When I did this activity with 2nd graders, I chose 10: microscope (slide viewer), hand lens, graduated cylinder, thermometer, eye dropper, binoculars, stop watch, compass, measuring tape, pan balance. I chose those mostly because those are what we had in the science lab. Included Tool Cards: Observe: telescope, binoculars, microscope, hand lens Measure: scale, pan balance, measuring spoons, measuring cup, beaker, graduated cylinder, stop watch, measuring tape, spring scale, thermometer, rain gauge, ruler Other: compass, eye dropper Now included: Editable Powerpoint so you can create additional task cards. **Note: I didn’t include the term “speed date” on the activities because I can only imagine the questions you might get. With your students, you can call it visiting with science tools. But speed date really is what I was picturing, and it’s the best way I can describe it to you! ;) Two Formats are included: Table Tent—print, cut in half, and fold on the dotted lines to make a triangle. Then, tape the bottom. These are cute and will stand up for you at the different stations. Task Cards— for a quicker option, just print and set on the table with the tools. Laminate if you have time beforehand.
