This collection of essays addresses the interplay of democratic norms and cultural identity within Asia. The overall question for the volume is how the dueling identities of Asianism (regional exceptionalism) and universalism (democratic norms) are shaping state discourse and behavior in Asia. This is based on a dialogue of scholars organized by CSIS to examine national perspectives on Asianism and universalism across the region, as well as the role of regional democracies in developing a common understanding of rules and norms as the foundation for a more stable regional order. The introduction provides context for these normative debates in the region and addresses the potential to prioritize democracy promotion in foreign policy strategy as segue to essays analyzing normative debates in Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, and the United States.

This book approaches the concept of identity from both logical-linguistic and socio-cultural perspectives, and explores its implications for our understanding of who or what we persons really are. In the process, it bridges disciplines that often remain disconnected - most notably analytic philosophy and the social sciences - and offers a novel critique of…
This book brings together contributions from leading authors in a range of fields related to Japan and the United Kingdom. Adopting a comparative perspective, it tackles topics ranging from the politics of opposition, democracy, immigration and citizenship, to education, sportsmanship and popular culture, as well as issues of immigration and identity. Cultural Nationhood and Political Statehood explores the development of the idea that every nation - most commonly understood as a linguistic community - is entitled to its own state. Following several contemporary studies of nationalism, this book provides a critical examination of the peculiarly modern concurrence of cultural nations and political states as it developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author argues that this is one of the most fateful coincidences of modernity: so firmly engraved in today's consciousness that most scholars and policymakers assume the correlation of cultural nationhood and political statehood to be intellectually unproblematic, yet the consequences have been overwhelming. The conflation of cultural nation and political state has imposed an isomorphism of language, culture, and politics upon the world. It has pre-determined democratic practice by enforcing the doctrine that the will of the people can only be the will of a people. It has led to the assumption that every nation may become a state. The book's originality lies in tracing the genesis and the elaboration over time of this curious contemporary assumption. This thought-provoking book offers an unconventional perspective on the development of nationalism and world history. It will be relevant for upper-level students, scholars, and researchers of European history, nationalism, and self-determination.
Humans have engaged in artistic and aesthetic activities since the appearance of our species. Our ancestors have decorated their bodies, tools, and utensils for over 100,000 years. The expression of meaning using color, line, sound, rhythm, or movement, among other means, constitutes a fundamental aspect of our species' biological and cultural heritage. Art and aesthetics, therefore, contribute to our species identity and distinguish it from its living and extinct relatives. Science is faced with the challenge of explaining the natural foundations of such a unique trait, and the way cultural processes nurture it into magnificent expressions, historically and ethnically unique. How do the human mind and brain bring about these sorts of behaviors? What psychological and neural processes underlie the appreciation of painting, music, and dance? How does training modulate these processes? Are humans the only species capable of aesthetic appreciation, or are other species endowed with the rudiments of this capacity? Empirical examinations of such questions have a long and rich history in the discipline of psychology, the genesis of which can be traced back to the publication of Gustav Theodor Fechner's Vorschule der Aesthetik in 1876, making it the second oldest branch in experimental psychology. The Oxford Handbook of Empirical Aesthetics brings together leading experts in psychology, neuroimaging, art history, and philosophy to answer these questions. It provides the most comprehensive coverage of the domain of empirical aesthetics to date. With sections on visual art, dance, music, and many other art forms and aesthetic phenomena, the breadth of this volume's scope reflects the richness and variety of topics and methods currently used today by scientists to understand the way our mind and brain endow us with the faculty to produce and appreciate art and aesthetics.
Providing an intellectual interpretation to the work of Edwidge Danticat, this new edited collection provides a pedagogical approach to teach and interpret her body of work in undergraduate and graduate classrooms. Approaches to Teaching the Works of Edwidge Danticat starts out by exploring diasporic categories and postcolonial themes such as gender constructs, cultural nationalism, cultural and communal identity, and moves to investigate Danticat's human rights activism, the immigrant experience, the relationship between the particular and the universal, and the violence of hegemony and imperialism in relationship with society, family, and community. The Editors of the collection have carefully compiled works that show how Danticat's writings may help in building more compassionate and relational human communities that are grounded on the imperative of human dignity, respect, inclusion, and peace. | Author: Taylor & Francis Group | Publisher: Routledge | Publication Date: Dec 13, 2021 | Number of Pages: 380 pages | Language: English | Binding: Paperback | ISBN-10: 103224030X | ISBN-13: 9781032240305

This textbook explores the reasons for intercultural differences and their effects on the behavior of individuals and organizations within the context of management. The text embraces the presence of ambiguity and complexity and encourages critical thinking when it comes to intercultural relations in order to avoid ethnocentrism, stereotyping and prejudice, as well as overly simplistic solutions. Integrating findings from management, but also the humanities and social sciences, as well as politics and popular culture, intercultural management is understood as a phenomenon that transcends disciplinary boundaries and includes questions around identity constructions, power relations, and ethics. This makes intercultural management a fascinating and rewarding subject to study. Throughout, the author encourages an analytical approach to intercultural management built upon strong methodological foundations, and draws on examples from a wide range of different contexts and cultures to help reflectively translate research and concepts into practice in a way that is lively and engaging. This textbook is essential reading for students taking university courses related to intercultural management. Lecturers can visit the companion website to access a Teaching Guide and PowerPoint slides that can be adapted and edited to suit teaching needs. Cultural Studies signals a major academic revolution for the 21st century. But what exactly is it, and how is it applied? It is a discipline that claims not to be a discipline; it is a radical critical approach for understanding racial, national, social and gender identities. "Introducing Cultural Studies" provides an incisive tour through the minefield of this complex subject, charting its origins in Britain and its migration to the USA, Canada, France, Australia and South Asia, examining the ideas of its leading exponents and providing a flavour of its use around the world. Covering the ground from Gramsci to Raymond Williams, postcolonial discourse to the politics of diaspora, feminism to queer theory, technoculture and the media to globalization, it serves as an insightful guide to the essential concepts of this fascinating area of study. It is essential reading for all those concerned with the quickening pulse of old, new and emerging cultures. Illustrations, unspecified

I’m painfully aware of what seems to be a very poor judgment of career choice on my part, and to be honest, a large part of this choice was to stick it to Mrs. Jacobson that said that there’s no place for the likes of me with my “pretend excuses” for misspelling every third word, in any self-respecting educational institution, so naturally, I had to become a teacher. For more than 25 years I’ve been teaching ESL adult classes and cross-culture business classes, and much like other challenged individuals who go through life with one hand tied behind their backs, I try to make up for what I lack in the spelling department with hours of research, high-quality graphics, humor, passion and love for what I do. The fact that I can actually do this job is first and foremost a testimony of open-mindedness (or desperation brought on by the long economic recession) of the schools that hired me over the years despite my very evident drawback, by the parents that tolerated grammar mishaps and most of all by my beautiful students who have learned to “always double-check their teacher” and have come up with the sweetest, most heart-warming and diplomatic ways of pointing out my spelling errors (putting to great use their newly-acquired conditional capacity: “I’m not sure, but, I think I might have spotted…”) Over the years, I've personally contributed to the economic success of countless computer ‘correcting program’ available on the market (you're welcome Grammarly) and on top of that my lessons are proofread by wonderful, kind (and slightly horrified) TPT teachers, BUT there are always some errors that slip by us (mostly because I keep messing with the lessons after they've been proofread). • If you feel offended by the existence of spelling errors in what is supposed to be a teaching tool • or if you, much like Mrs. Jacobson, think the dyslexia is just an excuse not to try harder THEN THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FOR YOU! For all you tree-hugging, open-minded individuals, who are looking for challenging, original material for your conversation classes and can see beyond the possible grammar errors (maybe even use it as a teaching opportunity “An extra point for the first student who can spot the obvious grammar error that I always tell you never to make”. Plus, you know that wonderful, warm, superior feeling you get when you catch a colleague’s error - well these moments are included with the product – no extra charge) THIS PRODUCT IS DEFINITELY FOR YOU! All my lessons are in an editable PPT format and you get a free product if you send me the errors to correct. I hope this product delivers everything you hoped for and more. ****************************************************************************************** Thank you! WISH YOU ALL A WONDERFUL AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
Is the communal divide that has engulfed the minds of Hindus and Muslims an intentionally orchestrated distrust? Are the conflicts, a result of elaborately curated propaganda which has been instilled into the minds of credulous masses? Are these staunch beliefs credible on the balance of facts and rationality?
