Pinterest is an explosion of wonderful ideas, and at times can be overwhelming. I decided to wade through my "For School" board and pick the top 10 ideas I want to implement in my classroom next year. 1. Interactive Student Notebooks - I wish I had found these sooner! Source: themiddleschoolmouth.blogspot.com via Nasreen on Pinterest 2. T-Shirt Book Project Source: teachingmyfriends.blogspot.co.uk via Nasreen on Pinterest 3. Magnetic Boggle - What a fun easy game that is already differentiated! Source: facebook.com via Nasreen on Pinterest 4. Easy Dry Erase Markers with Erasers - I have dry erase markers, I have pom poms, I have a glue gun. Source: eberhartsexplorers.blogspot.ca via Nasreen on Pinterest 5. Adjectives Frame - not only would students be practicing adjectives, they would be building confidence in themselves! Plus the photos would be great on our end-of-year slide show. Source: fabulous-fourth.blogspot.com via Nasreen on Pinterest 6. Personalized Class Stationery - We write letters throughout the year and I know the kids would get excited about writing on their unique class stationery. Plus, I'd get to use them too! Source: Uploaded by user via Nasreen on Pinterest 7. Roll a Brain Break - I always forget the different Brain Gym exercises and get stuck doing the same few. This is easily posted on the wall/board and has tons of variety. Plus, it's FREE! Source: yourtherapysource.com via Nasreen on Pinterest 8. Cell Phone Pals - I'm always looking for fun ways to buddy up my kiddos. Source: lewislearninglibrary.blogspot.com via Nasreen on Pinterest 9. Organization! I'm not an expert at it, but I get better every year. My file cabinet is not backed up to a wall this year so I'll be hanging those file pockets up this year. Source: teacheristatales.blogspot.com via Nasreen on Pinterest 10. Classbook - The Social Networking Bulletin Board! Source: plug-n-plan.blogspot.com via Nasreen on Pinterest There are so many more pins that I want (and will!) use in my classroom this year, but these are on my MUST DO list. Our first project this year has been a very progressive, multi step, multi media project that has really evolved as we created! Our first project when we got back from hurricane Harvery was to release some stress with scribbling to music.... Students spread out on the floor and scribbled to the sound of fast and slow music by “The Piano Guys” they love these songs because they recognize them from the radio but it’s all instrumental. The students were instructed to use large arm motions that cross over the body. Any motion that crosses from the right side of the body to the left or vise versa uses both hemispheres of the brain since each side controls one side of the body. It is very relaxing and the kids LOVED it!!!!!! The next class kids painted over thier scribbles with water colors, tempera paint, and India ink. They explored the way different paint resists or does not resist the crayon. You can follow me on instagram for more photos "Natty241" And my facebook page "Mrs. Waggenspack's Art Room" They were allowed to use their hands at the end. We try to use all 5 senses for a while brain experience. We talked about abstract art, Kinetic art, And the experience of art. It is a process and not just a product that we create in art. After each experience we gathered on the floor and talked about how they felt in one word. Students said, “Free, alive, happy, exhilarating, dancing, creative, like a real artist, quiet, excited, open, angry, peaceful, etc” When the paintings were finished the students tore them up into strips! They were so upset at first. When they saw the next step they were so excited. The students glued the strips on a late paper for the collage. This took three 50 minute classes. Then students traced the eyes and nose of the animal they wanted and outlines the eyes, nose, and beaks with India ink. ( pictures at the bottom of blog) this is the resin I use. I paint it on with a brush. This resin must be mixed one to one ratio and it is toxic so you must wear a mask. Do NOT let the children use it. You have to do it for them if you want the ultra shiney eyes effect! Wear a mask and use gloves! You can sprinkle glitter in it too for extra FUN!!! Then they glued the eyes and nose on the collage. The next step was to embellish the face and add details. We used India ink and fan brushes to make fur and feathers. When the entire face was finished I added resin to the eyes to make them shine These are how the eyes and noses look before they cut them out. We used the fan brush for making fur. These are the travers they could use for eyes, noses and beaks

1-2-3 Come Make A Name Map With Me! I teach “mapping” as a writing strategy to my college comp students. It’s a fun visual way for them to get their thoughts organized on paper, before they begin to write their essay. A name map is a terrific way to introduce "mapping" to elementary students. This is also an interesting icebreaker for the first week of school and a great way to get to know your new students. Children think of a symbol that represents them and draw that in the middle. I chose an apple as it’s sort of universal for school or teaching. Branching out from the center symbol is a variety of things about the person such as hobbies, their favorite season, birthday, what they want to be when they grow up etc. By having students use their two favorite colors to write their first and last names in the center of their object, everyone gets to know another “tidbit” about that person. The completed activities make a wonderful back to school bulletin board too! Make sure you do a personal one of yourself, so that you have a sample to show your students as a way to explain things, as well as a means for them to get to know their new teacher. Includes an explanatory note home to families. Sharing name maps is a nice activity to do after reading the story Chrysanthemum, a wonderful back to school tale, whose main character is a little mouse named Chrysanthemum. She loved her unusual name until she started school and everyone began making fun of her. It's one of my all-time favorite back-to-school books and especially great if you need some stories to go with "bucket-filling." My inspiration to do name maps, came from an art teacher’s “heart maps” that he did with his 4th graders at Riverside Elementary. Click on the link to check out their awesome endeavors. I hope you and yours have as much fun making these as I did. Click on the link to view/download Name Maps. This packet is a special FREEBIE in my TpT shop. Thanks for visiting today. Hey hey! Do you remember being in college and taking a test wishing, if I just had extra time I could really learn this in detail and get a good grade? That is how children feel. I am the first to say and admit that I move in math class at the rate of a racehorse. Do I like it? Not at all. Do I have to? YES. With all of the math standards that we have to teach, our year at a glance is packed with math standards. Maybe our kids don’t understand the material right after we teach the standard. However, should we forget about their data just because we have to move on to the next? After I give the kids an assessment, I grab one of my re-teach half sheets and write down any scores less than an A. I paperclip the assignments to the back of the half sheet so I know that I need to re-assess those people. After I record their scores, I reprint a paper (for each kid) that I can use for a small group, and the assessment again. When I have extra time (I know who has extra time), I pull a […]
