In this “classic” Calvert project, sixth graders first learned about the history of tessellations (and artist M.C. Escher, who is famous for his unique tessellations like the one pictured here) before creating one of their own. Tessellations, which have been around for thousands of years, are a special kind of pattern/design made from repeating shapes called polygons (closed shapes with three or more sides). In tessellation designs, congruent polygons fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces that repeat again and again- they could go on forever! Students painted their unique tessellation designs using acrylic paint in a warm or cool color scheme of their choice. To create the portrait, on a separate piece of paper, students traced the light and dark areas of their faces using a projected digital photograph. Using the opposite color scheme from their background, they painted their portrait, making sure that the light and dark areas were highly contrasting. Here are the colorful finished pieces!

I did this project with my 8-13 year old kids around Halloween. We used thick and thin permanent black markers to draw and color the spooky houses. We were sure to make our houses look wonky with slanted sides and windows for that creepy, abandoned house feel. We went for variety in our windows, creating different sizes and styles, and added lots of little details on our roofs like spires, weather-vanes, cats, chimneys and spider webs. At the foreground we added graves, carved pumpkins, fences, etc. The sky, path and interior window lights were painted with liquid marker ink, which I saved from dried markers. Simply place your dried markers, uncapped and felt tip down, in a jar of water and let soak for a day - you will have beautiful marker ink that you can use for painting. The moon was simply drawn with round tracer and left unpainted, though you could paint it in with white acrylic paint. These turned out so beautifully spooky and with such great contrast. The marker ink has a way of cauliflowering when it dries on the paper, which creates interesting texture, and adds to the night-time, spooky feel.

We are currently starting our final projects of the year. [I can't believe it!] But for now, let me catch you up on what we just finished... 5th and 4th grade have been working on the same concepts for the past two projects. Both grades participated in a school wide Egyptian art unit by creating Egyptian sarcophagi. They reviewed SYMMETRY, and learned about hieroglyphics. After that, they learned about creating TINTS and SHADES by making an undersea painting. You can find these handouts here- http://www.teachandshoot.com/2015/02/art-room-handouts-round-3-value.html I would have let the students have more freedom with other colors, but I really only had blue left, and underwater came to mind. Thanks for visiting! 3rd grade also participated in the Egyptian art unit by creating Egyptian PORTRAITS! This might be my favorite project from this year. What a wonderful job the students did! After that, 3rd grade made ORIGAMI frogs, but I forgot to take photos! After origami, 3rd grade started creating ASSEMBLAGE art like the artist Louise Nevelson. They are just starting to paint their sculptures this week! 2nd grade created a fun pyramid COLLAGE as part of the Egyptian art unit! After that, 2nd and 1st grade both created ABSTRACT Picasso PORTRAITS. 1st grade and kindergarten created Egyptian necklaces and learned a little bit about PERSPECTIVE by drawing the pyramids. Kindergarten just finished learning about weaving by creating some alligator WEAVINGs!
