This is a pack full of activities for new fifth graders at the beginning of the year! It incorporates the number 5 into many different kinds of activities, including icebreakers, getting to know you, creativity, word building, math, and writing skills. These are great activities for students to work on the first week in class to interact with each other, as well as good independent activities if you need time to collect supplies or get things in order. Activities included: - FIFTH GRADE Making Words: Students can manipulate letter cards to come up with as many words as possible using the letters in FIFTH GRADE. Letter cards included for extra support in color and printer-friendly b/w. - FIND FIVE Activity: A Scattergories type activity where students need to think of 5 things to fit in each category. (2 pages) - FIVE FACTS (about math!): A math fact practice sheet focusing on multiplication and division facts and some challenge work including multiple operations. Also has space for students to create pictures to support their answers. (2 pages) - FRIEND FINDER: Find 5 friends that fit in each category. This encourages students to talk to and interact with each other, while finding out new information about their classmates. (2 pages) - 5th GRADE FURRY MONSTER: An activity where students can use their creativity to create their own drawing of a class pet (monster) out of 5 lines, then write about what they created. - PENTAGON PUZZLES: A four-part math activity that reviews pentagons. Activity 1: Students must circle only the pentagons in the group of shapes. Activity 2: Students will cut out the pentagons and create a puzzle/picture with the shapes. This is like creating pictures with “Tangrams” – only they are all pentagons! Challenge 1: Students can draw their own five-sided shapes to create a picture using ONLY five-sided shapes! Challenge 2: Students can create “Pentagon People”. They can make different sized pentagons, develop characters, and write a story about their “Pentagon People!” All activities include teacher directions and different ways to play. by Sidney L. Arnold (Author) Billy & The Cheese Puff is a full children's interactive narrative focused on a personified cat and cheese puff. The story describes Billy's triumphs and fails when attempting to capture a runaway cheese puff his owner had left behind on the living room table. This book was written in dedication and remembrance of Harley, my family's past beloved cat, who was the inspiration behind the character Billy. I had originally put together this concept in the fifth grade, and decided to completely rewrite and illustrate a book inspired by my past idea my junior year of high school. In the book's renewed version, I opted to draw pictures both horizontally and vertically. This is because my audience is able to interact with the book by flipping the literature either horizontally or vertically, in turn driving the reader to fully stop to observe the page before continuing. I am thrilled to share the upgraded version with so many tiny and creative minds, and hope to spark children to create their own imaginative stories and characters. First days of school can be stressful. There's an insane amount of pressure to make a great first impression. The administration wants you to go over the handbook of rules for the district. There's tons of forms that need to be filled out. You need to learn their names and it's hard because half the names don't match your class list. His name is Samuel but he goes by S.J. Her name on your roll says Mary, but she goes by Mary Beth. You want to start off the year on the right note regarding procedures and expectations, but you also want it to be a little bit fun, too. Yes, it can be complicated to plan out the first day. My first day was absolutely fantastic. Yes, I learned names. Yes, I went over the handbook. Yes, I went over forms. But we also did some quick exciting things that started us out on the right foot. In no particular order, here is what made my first day FANTASTIC. 1. I let my students collaborate on a story. I started a story on the whiteboard and each student could only add four words to the story. It ended up being hilarious and making ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE but no one cared. It was fun. They worked as a family. 2. That bring me to my next point--we don't call our classes, um, classes. Or homerooms. We call them families. So I have Mrs. Johnson's Family for my 1st period class and Mrs. Anderson's Family for my second period class. (Homeroom teacher names were changed for this post.) You get the idea. And it really does reinforce this idea that we need to work together like a family should. 3. I embraced and addressed my students' biggest fear. Each teacher has his/her students coming to the room with a big fear. Go ahead and address it. Since I'm the first year of middle school, the big fear is the locker. Will I ever get into it? Will I have enough time to get everything out of it? My students can't begin to learn procedures until we address the locker issue. Once they feel confident with their locker, they are ready to learn procedures. So, what did I do? I lined up my wonderful parents to come work with my students one-on-one the very first day of school on their locker. And it was the best thing for that first day. Address your students' fears with a solution. Don't think, "Oh I need to teach procedures! I'll help them with that later on in the week." No. Their Big Fear is ALL THEY CAN THINK ABOUT. Fix the fear, then they can face all the procedures and rules head on! 4. If you know me, you know that I ABSOLUTELY DETEST GETTING TO KNOW YOU GAMES. Why do I have to name a fact about myself that starts with a J just because my first name is Jordyn? Nothing starts with a J that I like! I hate jelly beans. I'm ok with jolly ranchers but they aren't anything special. I. HATE. GETTING. TO. KNOW. YOU. GAMES. I think I've made my point clear. Soooooo---what did I do to get to know them? I made a statement and pointed to two sides of the room. The students moved to the side of the room for their answer. Examples: 1. Team Cat or Team Dog 2. Would you rather travel every day or never leave home? 3. Team Math/Science or Team Language Arts? 4. Alabama or Auburn? (I live in Alabama, so this is a big deal around here. Feel free to change to whatever sports teams works for you. And by the way, the correct answer to me is the side of the room that was yelling WAR EAGLE!) We didn't do this as one big activity. I broke up the reading of the district handbook by doing a couple of these, then back to the handbook, then a couple more of these, then back to the handbook, a couple more of these, then going over forms. THEY LOVED THIS ACTIVITY! It didn't force the quiet kids to talk, but they did participate by moving. It let the other ones announce why they were on that side. It was just a great icebreaker for those of us who are anti-icebreaker. --->Do you need a GETTING TO KNOW YOU ACTIVITY perfect for the first few days? (And not icebreaker questions that tweens dislike---actually questions they enjoy answering!)

I have had the BEST first week! It was jam packed and the days went by in the blink of an eye. I've been use to have 18 kids for the whole day in first grade. Since I'm just teaching reading, I have three different classes and 72 kids! That is definitely going to take
I moved from Elementary to Middle School two years ago. This will be my third year in fifth grade. I really love setting up my classroom but it is so much easier and less time consuming now. Primary teachers go above and beyond!!! Here are some things that I do to make it even easier. Things that I do to get ready: (If you make a to do list before you go in it helps) #1 Clean out closets and organize...purge I quickly go through all my cabinets and drawers. I am still weeding down my teaching materials, if it is not science or math related, I have been giving it away. Last year, I saved photo copy boxes and when I finished a science unit I put it in a box and labeled it. The copy boxes fit in my closet. Take note of materials and what you may need as you organize. #2 Name Tags...no more labeling I was obsessed with labels and then went to a number system in my elementary classroom. No more!!! I have two homeroom classes and found it hard to use numbers. The only thing I label is their desk nameplates for the open door day. I bought the $1.00 chart strips from Target. The kids want to see who is in their class. We have the kids bring their nameplates with them when we switch classes the first few weeks. Fifth graders can write their name and label their own workbooks and notebooks!!!! Our students share desks and they write their name on masking tape and put on inside. Buy extra sharpies!!!! (Hint...laminate first. If there is an error, write over sharpie with dry erase marker and it comes off!!!) #3 Bulletin Boards..leave them up all year!!!! There are fewer bulletin boards in Middle School. I cover the boards in my classroom with fade less black paper and have not changed them since I moved. I cover up over the summer. I did update the middle board with a STEM section this year Design boards that you don't have to keep changing. It will save you time. #4 Copy for First Week (3 days)...Keep it Simple You will not get through everything you have planned. I was looking at my plans from last year and there were so many extra things added like an assembly, school pictures, fire drill, school tour, etc. The activities that you do plan take longer than you think. It is good to have extra things, but it should be focused on starting curriculum, like setting up interactive notebooks, going over math practices, multiplication quiz, etc. Choose your B2S activities carefully. I am doing a Math About Me Using Equations and a Fifth Grade News sheet. I do have team building things planned as well. (you don't want to repeat from other grades) Start out slow and establish your routines and expectations! #5 Planning I like to create a pacing guide for my math and science units. Luckily, our grade level team has created it together. There is so much to teach and it keeps me on track. #6 Furniture I like my desks in groups. We do a lot of group work in math and science. I also want my desks facing the front board, because I use the projector for math and use many video clips. I bought the supply carts from Target and have one for each group. If they are not using supplies, they can be moved. There is two extra shelves to store notebooks and anything else we need. The carts are on wheels and can be moved. I use a kidney table as my desk with cubbies for storage. The teacher desk was taking up too much space and I was never at it. I keep my lap top on a cart near the front board. I use a student chair at the cart, because they teacher chair was cumbersome. Have a great school year!!!!
