Sharing the most inspirational art I can find on the web! Title: Haverstraw Bay Date: 1868 Location: U.S. Artist: Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880) Type of art: oil on canvas Note: Gifford was one of the leading members of the Hudson River School and a practitioner of Luminism. This American painting style from the 1850s-1870s focused on the unique effect of light on landscapes. Haverstraw Bay is located 40 miles north of New York City. The widest point on the Hudson River used to be a major provider of American shad, now an endangered species. Shad fishing is thus prohibited on that river. Gerry (American, 1813-1891) Oil on canvas, unsigned 8 x 12 inches Philadelphia, MFA Boston, Toledo, High Museum, Brooklyn, etc. Considered a leader of the White Mountain School, Samuel Lancaster Gerry was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Although he had no formal art training, he was greatly influenced by the vision and techniques of Asher B. Durand and Thomas Cole. Following his travels through France, England, Italy, and Switzerland in the late 1830’s, absorbing the art and landscape of Europe, Gerry set up his studio in Boston, where he founded the Boston Art Club in 1854. He also made frequent trips to New Hampshire’s Lake District and its White Mountains. Gerry was a frequent exhibitor at such institutions as the Boston Athenaeum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the American Art Union, and the Boston Art Club. Today, his paintings are displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Toledo Museum of Art and the High Museum of Art
