Trevor and I visited a number of art galleries during our visit to Santa Fe, New Mexico and we were captivated by the Pueblo clay pots. They were stunning in the simplicity of the form, the natural color palette, and the amazing detail. As you may know, the Puebloans are not a single native tribe; there are 19 surviving Pueblo tribes in New Mexico, each with their own style of artwork. In particular, we loved the Acoma pottery. We watched as an Acoma artist painted tiny, perfect lines, one after the other, covering the surface of the pot, using yucca as a paintbrush. It was incredible. Here are two Acoma pots I photographed at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Wow, right? We were eager to create our own art inspired by the pottery of the Acomas. We made two-dimensional pots out of salt dough and painted them with acrylic paint and paintbrushes. As we struggled with our simple versions, our respect for the the intricacy and perfection of the Acoma pottery grew. --------- Salt Dough Pueblo-Inspired Clay Pots Materials: salt dough (2 parts flour, 1 part salt, 1 part water) rolling pin index card scissors plastic knife acrylic paint paintbrush How You Make It: 1. Fold an index card in half. Holding the card by the fold, cut a curve the shape you want your pot to be. 2. Unfold the index card and place it on rolled-out salt dough. Use a plastic knife to cut around the 3. Smooth the edges and clean up any imperfections. If you want a cut-out in your pot, now is the time. 4. Dry the salt dough pots in a very low oven or leave them out to air dry for several days. Occasionally flip them over so they dry evenly. 5. Using shades of sand, terra cotta, ochre, brown and/or black paint, add designs to the pots. Here are the three that I made. Trevor made two, plus a New Mexico flag. Such a fun project and a great way to remember our fantastic visit to New Mexico.

Salt dough is a wonderful inexpensive way to make ornaments, and you can use the salt dough in so many ways, from shaping and sculpting, to rustic cookie cutter gingerbread type ornaments. The kids have always enjoyed making them, and I have too. I tweaked the dough a little, this time around, by adding ground cinnamon and essential oils to it, it is simple, smells heavenly and comes out with that old fashioned "ginger bread", "Little House on the Prairie" primitive look.The aroma begins while mixing the dough, continues through the baking and is still heavenly while hanging on the tree… the only negative is that you can't eat them when you take them out of the oven… and you will wish you could. A straw makes a nice clean opening, but is a little large for the smaller ornaments. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes to an hour or more, until the ornaments are dry. Tie up with string, ribbon or strips of "Homespun" type material. You can use peppercorns or cloves for eyes if you like (put them into the dough before baking). Bake at 300 degrees 30 minutes to an hour, until the ornaments are hard. Decorate however it suits you. I have sometimes finished these ornaments in three different ways; 1). Lacquer, 2). Lacquer spray, 3). Paraffin Wax (melt the wax in a double boiler, and then dip the ornament). This year they are rustic and unfinished… they look like cookies this way. This is a project I do at Easter time with the students. These are done by Grade 1. I also did this with Grade 4 this year using smaller beads and more complicated patterns. Click on picture to see larger. You need to do up a recipe of salt dough clay. ( 1 recipe is enough for 24 crosses using a 3 1/2 inch cutter) 4 cups flour 1 cup salt 2 cups to 2 and 1/2 cups warm water (varies depending on flour and humidity, enough for a soft dough) Knead into a soft dough Store in a ziploc bag. If not using right away you can store in the refrigerator for like forever. Just pull it out ahead of time to come to room tempertaure before using. I like to color the dough. Using liquid tempera or acrylic paint squirt some on the dough. Fold over the dough. and then knead like crazy....don't worry if it looks marbled like this it just means you have to keep kneading. It will eventually look like this. Even color throughout. Roll it out and then using a cookie cutter cut out the shape. Place a paper clip 1/2 way in at the top for hanging. I get the kids to put a bit of water on the surface of the cross using their finger and then they can start forming their design with beads. We use pony beads in different sizes as well as wood beads and large decorative beads. I asked them to try and make a pattern using color or shape. They need to push the beads in fairly firmly. I then place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I write the name of the student on the paper in sharpie and then place their creation either on top or next to their name. This allows me to keep them straight until they are baked when I can then write their names on the back in sharpie. Bake in a 250 - 300 degree oven for about 2 - 3 hours until hard. You don't want to overbake and have them get a brownish tinge. When cool add a coat or 2 of Mod podge. This will help "glue" into place any loose beads as well as add a nice shiny finish. Keep in mind that salt dough responds to the humidity in the air. It can sometimes feel soft even after baking and sealing. Just let it be and it will dry out again. That's it. I add a ribbon thru the paper clip at the top and the kids have a great creation to take home for Easter. See you next time.
