The second half of the 19th century represented something of a ‘Golden Age’ of the violin sonata in France: Influential violin sonatas such as those by Franck, Fauré and Saint-Saëns were among the successful works of this genre, inspiring many further compositions.Saint-Saëns’ Violin Sonata no. 1 was incorporated into the repertoire of numerous late 19th-century violinists soon after it was written. It was also this sonata which inspired Marcel Proust when he wrote about the fictional sonata by the composer Vinteuil in his novel “À la recherche du temps perdu”.This performing edition edited by Fabien Guilloux and François de Médicis is based on the musical text from “Saint-Saëns – Œuvres instrumentales complètes”, volume III/4 in which Saint-Saëns’ lengthy corrections of the Durand first edition as well as the autograph sources have been meticulously evaluated.·Composer / Author:Guilloux, Fabien / Médicis, François deIntroduction·Composer / Author:Guilloux, Fabien / Médicis, François deIntroduction·Composer / Author:Guilloux, Fabien / Médicis, François deEinführung·Sonate no 1 op. 75·I. His writing is characterised by interwoven psychological, religious, and existential themes. Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky was born in 1821, the son of a Moscow physician and the second of seven children. He was admitted to the Military Engineering Institute of Saint Petersburg in 1838, graduating 5 years later. By this time both his parents had died and he had experienced his first epileptic fit. Arrested and convicted of political offences in 1849, he was sentenced to death. Following a last-minute reprieve this was commuted to 4 years’ hard labour in Siberia. The conditions were harsh and he was kept in shackles for the whole of this time. Unsurprisingly, this experience had a profound effect on his work.1 …
