Jacob decided to be St. Jerome. I think the fact that he's learning Latin this year helped in that choice since St Jerome translated the Bible into Latin. Jacob's costume was a brown robe which I bought years ago from Oriental Trading. Over the top of the robe, we added a piece of sackcloth with

My oldest daughter (who is age 14 and has out-grown me!) wanted to be Kateri Tekakwitha for All Saints Day this year. Finding a modest Indian costume in a woman's size is a difficult task. So we decided to try our hand at creating one from tan colored felt material. I don't have a grand

I created this game for a program...that no one showed up to. It happens sometimes in ministry, and I have learned to not get frustrated about it. Besides, I have a game ready made for another opportunity, and something new to stash on the soon-to-be labeled Saint shelf in my new classroom. The topic for the night was the Beatitudes. I decided to make a game that followed the same rules of Old Maid while giving info about the Beatitudes. I also wanted to tie in some modern day Saints. Most Catholic kids can tell you about St. Francis, St. Peter, and St. Patrick. But do they know St. Edith Stein, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, and St. Gianna Molla? I looked up info on Saints that lived sometime in the past hundred years or so. I then tried to match each of them to a particular Beatitude that they particularly exemplified... and it was very difficult. I think that I could have used any of these Saints as a model for any of the Beatitudes, which makes sense. The Beatitudes were Jesus' New Law. These men and women were living out lives of heroic virtue, so it makes perfect sense that they would be examples of everything found in Matthew 5. I actually found out that Blessed John Paul the Great referred to Blessed Pier Giorgio as "A Man of the Eight Beatitudes." The game includes a set of directions and a standard sheet for the back of the cards. A full deck of 53 cards is needed for the game. There are pairs of 26 different cards based on the Scripture of the Beatitudes, the Saints, biographies of their lives, and virtues/vices that correspond with the Beatitudes. There is also one "Beatitude Bad Attitude" Card- which is the equivalent of the Old Maid card. Click on the picture of the eight Saints below for a link to download the game. Have fun playing and learning about the Beatitudes and these awesome Saints! ***Update: The printable game has been edited to reflect JP2 and Mother Teresa's canonizations :)
Love is Patient, Love is Kind 1 Corinthians 13:4 This year for our upcoming St. Valentine’s Day card exchange, Snuggles decided to create Bible Candy Valentines to give to his family and friends! The Catholic moms group that I belong to recently celebrated All Saints Day (because Friday is a much better party day than Tuesday!). To my surprise, two of the games used Paper Dalis. I snapped some photos to share their ideas with you. Saints Ring Toss Copy and paste the saint paper dolls into a Word doc, so they are all small and the right-size for a ring toss. Color them up! Laminate them (so they'll be good next year) and affix them to a skewer. Then, just stick them into the ground in a good configuration. Give a kid a plastic ring to toss, and see how many they can get around a saint picture. Don't forget the sweets, holy cards, stickers, etc., for rewards. Here's a close-up: Cupcake Walk It's like a cakewalk---with cupcakes. Just do the same as you did with the ring-toss saints, though you might want to make the paper dolls a bit bigger and arrange them in a circle. Also, make sure to put the name of every saint on a separate strip of paper and put them in a plastic baggie. Here's part of the cupcake walk circle. Have each kid stand at a saint, then play some music. Stop it suddenly (like in Musical Chairs), so that every child is behind a saint picture. Can you tell it was a warm day and many kids ditched their costumes later? Have a mom pull the name of a saint from the plastic baggie. Whoever has the name of that saint wins a cupcake.
