Here are some free lesson helps to go along with Lesson 37, I can keep the Sabbath day holy. You can find the lesson here.I had so much fun creating a this pack and hope you find something helpful for your class. This would also be great for FHE-pick and choose an activity or 2 for your lesson. Attention activity: Calendar and calendar cards. Explain what a calendar is and ask them what they did during the week. The older classes may be able to tell you the day they did the activity as well. I included 12 activity cards for the week and 6 for the sabbath day. As they tell you the activity tape it to your calendar. If its an activity like school place it on Monday and draw a line across. If there is not a card for the activity draw directly on the calendar or if your art skills are as awesome as mine you can always write it. Finish with Sunday activities. This will help lead you into the next questions, discussion section, and activities. Scripture poster (goes with scripture and word strips): Display through out class or cut into puzzle pieces and have your class put it together. Read out loud. this can also be used for enrichment activity #3 (help the children memorize the verse). Activity: Cut out the happy and sad face and the cards on the next page (these come from the manual). Place the cards in a bag and display the faces. Take turns drawing a card and decide if the activity is something we should or should not do on the sabbath. Scripture Story: Before class print and cut out sheep and the scripture. Glue the scripture to the back of the sheep. Hide it somewhere in your class room. When it comes time to read the scripture have the kids search for the sheep. Once found read the scripture. You can also play a few rounds of hot and cold and let them take turns hiding and finding the sheep. Sabbath Day book: I could not get the book from the manual to open...anyone else have this problem? So I created an interactive page. Print the two pages for each child. On the first page (the one that says my Sabbath book) you are going to cut along the lines going horizontal and fold the line going vertical. Glue the title area to the second page where it says glue :) Let the kids color the pictures. Enrichment Activity 2: Pick one or both of these activities. Print the cards, blank face, and hands. Cut the apart the cards and the hands. Have the kids pick a card and answer the question. After have them use a marker and draw the body part that was talked about on the blank face. The hands will be taped on the front of the face (see below for example) Bonus Activity: Sabbath day I can...spinners. Its a cute and fun way to remember some of the fun things we CAN do on the Sabbath. Print 1 page per child (cardstock recommended but not required). Cut out both circles. Have the kids color and use a brad to connect in the center. Turn to find a fun idea to do on the Sabbath. Boy and Girl option. From spending time with friends and family to reading an adventurous novel, here are some great ideas on how to rest on the Sabbath.
A very dear friend of mine asked me to post our family list of Sunday activities that we do. Perhaps you may benefit as well. As we try to keep this special day holy, it's sometimes easy for the children to get bored if you only present a list of "Don'ts" such as: don't watch TV, don't go to parks, don't shop, don't play computer games, etc. My children didn't look forward to Sundays, so we had a family council a long time ago and drew up a list of approved Sabbath activities that they can look through when they can't think of ways to spend their time. I think it's so important to have our family look forward to this day, rather than dread it and see it as something to be 'endured'. The Lord sanctioned the Sabbath as a blessing and a strength to us, and I want to delight in His holy day. Our all-time favorite activity is to play a game we made up, it's called the Gospel Game. Anyone can play this, regardless of your personal religious views. It's perfectly applicable to any set of scriptures (such as the Qu'ran, Talmud, etc). First we set the stage by creating the game board. We place 10 wash cloths on the floor of our living room. They are set up to create a path of 'stepping stones' across the room. The playing pieces for the game are the children. The first child will stand at one end of the path of washcloths and I sit at the other end. I will ask them questions about the scriptures or teachings of modern prophets, and if they answer correctly they may step forward onto the next wash cloth. I try to make the questions appropriate for the child, so Sarah will be asked much more difficult questions than Daniel. I try to ask about the scripture stories we've been learning that week. I will also use the Gospel Art Kit and show them pictures of Bible stories, and I'll ask them to tell me what the names of the people are or retell the story that is being portrayed. After answering 10 questions correctly, they are at the end of the path and they get to pick a jelly bean from the bowl in my lap. I love this activity because it's completely free to create and can be played with merely a few wash cloths (or any other items that can be used to create the path on the floor- sometimes we've used hot-pads from the kitchen, or pieces of paper.) This game can be tailored to the needs of any family. The children love playing this game and each child usually takes a turn going through the path several times. Sarah's favorite activity is called Sunday Stations. She sets up different activities around the house that people can cycle through. She may set up art supplies on the kitchen table for drawing and painting. She usually has a reading station with the Friend magazines next to the couch, and several blankets and stuffed animals to cuddle with while she reads. She'll tuck the boys both into the couch and read to them aloud while they hug toys. Another station may be singing time, with hand instruments to play in beat to the music. Another station may be at the piano. She'll play Primary songs and have me try to guess what song it is. There are also games we like to play that have Book of Mormon characters printed on the cards, so we can play Go Fish, Memory, Old Maid, and Crazy Eight with those decks. Nathan likes to cook with the children, and they all look forward to that a lot. They REALLY get excited to spend time with Dad in the kitchen. Last week Nathan instructed Matthew how to make macaroni and cheese all by himself, and Matt was so proud about learning this new skill. They also like to cook desserts together, like cream puffs or cake, or make loaves of bread. We love to read educational books together, but our very favorite reading activity is to gather in the library room with blankets while Nathan reads a classic book or poetry aloud. The children relished reading the original Alice in Wonderland and Winnie the Pooh books. Some other favorites are The Little house on the Prairie, Mr. Poppers Penguins, and A Midsummer's Night Dream (although it did take some explaining to translate Shakespeare into modern English for them). We play family games together after dinner. I prefer games that aren't highly competitive. There is more of a spirit of collaboration than competition in our games. I try to emphasize that it doesn't matter who wins since it's merely a game. The main point of the activity is to have fun as a family, regardless who the winner is. I try to train the children to wish each other luck before every game, and after every game they shake hands and say 'Good Game!'. Some of our favorite games include Rummikub, Uno, Blokus, Carcassonne, Mancala, and checkers. I try to make a dessert every Sunday, since we don't often have desserts during the week. When I don't have time or energy to make a 'real' dessert, we do "Sundaes on Sunday". We set up a sundae bar with ice cream and all the toppings then we let the children choose what toppings they'd like. (Editor's update: we have now changed our Sundaes on Sunday tradition. Children are rewarded with ice cream for their behavior in church. They get one scoop for being reverent in Sacrament Meeting and one scoop for participating well in Sunday School. They also get to choose one topping for each song they sang with the congregation during Sacrament meeting. This system works very well for us! Our kids usually sing every song and are eager to participate reverently in their classes.) On the first Sunday of each month, the children really look forward to doing PPI's with Nathan. (That would be a Personal Priesthood Interview) They beg him to do PPI's often. They each have a turn to go speak privately with Nathan. They first pray together, then they talk about thier week, concerns they may have about the family, what they are learning that week, and set goals. After the interview they get a small piece of chocolate or other candy. We sometimes take nature walks to enjoy Gods beautiful creations. There are lots of greenbelts around, so we pick one and drive to it. It's surprising how secluded the green belts in Austin feel....often we can't see or hear anything to indicate we're anywhere near civilization. I love it. I used to go on drives into the mountains on Sundays when I was little. I loved the feelings in my heart when I'm away from the noise and bustle of the city and surrounded by trees. I love listening to the birds in the trees and the buzz of insects. We always call grandparents or other relatives on Sunday. Nathan and I love chatting with our siblings and parents, especially since we haven't seen most of them for a couple of years. I would feel so isolated from my extended family if it weren't for our weekly chats. I love hearing of their adventures, concerns, trials, and triumphs. I don't feel like we're a thousand miles away, and it always lifts my spirits to share in life's delights with my favorite people. Developing talents is encouraged, so we sometimes practice music or create art of various forms: painting, drawing, embroidery, sewing, etc. We also do a ZIP meeting. (Zion ImProvement) We meet for a family council where we discuss any family concerns and set family goals. It could be goals on family struggles we'd like to overcome, or new talents we'd like to explore, or something we'd like to learn about or go see. I have a family binder with our goals. There is a page for each person so they can choose their individual goals to work on. We can review how the previous week went and decide what changes would be good to improve things. We also can talk about the schedule for the upcoming week and talk about the needs each person has so we can address them. We REALLY love playing the Compliment Game. For this game we pick a family member (for example, Daniel) then everyone has a turn to say something they admire about Daniel. After we all share compliments with Daniel, we move to the next person and everyone expresses particular things they like about that person. We do this until each member of the family has a turn. We try to be specific in our comments. Instead of just saying, "She's nice" we focus on details such as, "I like how she played with me and read me a story, that was nice." Often we do this around the dinner table. It provides such great conversation! It's uplifting for everyone and brings such a sweet spirit into the meal. Sometimes the children prefer to play this on the floor. We sit in a circle, and one person has a ball. They pick a family member to compliment. After expressing the kind words, they roll the ball to the person they picked. The new person compliments a new person of their choice and rolls the ball to them. This continues until everyone has received the ball several times. It's surprising how much they love this game! It's so simple, and it's so great for building family unity and love. Nathan loves making music as a family on Sundays (well, he does this everyday). He'll play the guitar or piano and we'll sing hymns together. Sometimes he'll accompany Sarah on the piano. The boys like leading the music with large wooden spoons to wave in the air. It's really fun to sing together. Earlier this year we hosted regular music nights in our home. We'd invite other members of the congregation to come sing twice each month and we'd serve refreshments. It was so nice to have our home be a gathering place for such wonderful people. I loved having them in my home. We will often read the Illustrated Scriptures together with the children. After each chapter they can choose to answer three trivia questions about the story.When they pass off 3 correct answers they can choose a jelly bean. I adapted this idea from Jewish history. In my studies a few years ago I read that teachers would give children honey on their tongue to savor while they listened to the words of the Talmud. It trained them to associate the scriptures with a physical delight until they were old enough to enjoy scriptures for the intrinsic rewards. A new goal for the summer is to introduce a new Sabbath activity. As part of the home school curriculum, each person will have an individual writing journal and we will all be writing in them during the week, whether it is a fictitious story, journal entry, poetry, etc. On Sunday evenings we will make popcorn (or some other snack) to enjoy while we take turns sharing something from our weekly writings. This way the children will have more exposure to public speaking and sharing their creations, and we can all encourage each other's efforts. I'm really looking forward to this activity! Sometimes we just have a quiet day and everyone cuddles together for a refreshing nap. Our choice of activities usually is dependent on the parental energy level. If it was an exhausting day at church (like teaching a rambunctious class of very active children), we opt for quiet activities like reading or painting or cuddling for a nap. This article describes some "classic" vegetarian Adventist recipes made up to be eaten at fellowship dinners, or "potlucks" after Sabbath divine services. New updated posters and worksheets have been added for the Tabernacle, Aaron's High Priest outfit and the High Priest Breastplate. This is a very condensed lesson on the tabernacle. For the students that I have, I decided to teach the basics about the High Priest's clothes and the tabernacle and how it was set up. God told the people exactly how He wanted them to set it up and how He wanted them to worship Him. I made a lapbook and the students filled in each numbered item that was in the tabernacle as we discussed it. Review: Moses wrote the first 5 books of the Old Testament, and our lesson today is in Exodus. God gave Moses the 10 commandments on Mount Sinai and when Moses came down after 40 days, he saw the people worshipping a gold calf that his brother Aaron had made. Moses was so angry; he threw down the 10 commandments and broke them! Moses melted the gold calf and mixed it in the water and made the people drink it. Then, Moses cut 2 new tablets, went back onto Mount Sinai, and God wrote the 10 commandments again. (Exodus 34:28) Lesson: Today we are going to talk about how the Israelites worshiped while they were in the wilderness for 40 years. (Scripture is Exodus 35-40) God gave Moses His instructions to build a tabernacle. Tabernacle means tent and was a place to worship God. They could pack everything up and move it when they traveled through the wilderness. They built a tabernacle 2 years after they left Egypt. (Exodus 40:17) They made it exactly as God told them He wanted it. The people donated gold, jewels, oil for the lamps, and fabric for the priests. There was so much gold given by the people, Moses had to tell them not to bring anymore! (Exodus 36:6-7) Moses wanted anyone that could make items for the tabernacle to help with the work. Aaron was the first high priest, and his sons were made priests. The tribe of Levi also worked in the tabernacle with Aaron. There were special clothes made for the priest. (Exodus 39) The priest wore a turban on his head, also called a Mitre. (Exodus 39:30) There was a gold plate on the front that said HOLINESS TO THE LORD and was tied on with a blue cord. The high priest wore an ephod (looks like an apron) that was made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and of fine woven linen. It had shoulder straps to hold the pieces together. They were engraved pieces of gold with onyx stones on the shoulders as a memorial for the sons of Israel. (Exodus 39:2-7) And over the ephod, the priest wore a breastplate. It had 12 different stones on it to represent the12 tribes. (Exodus 39:8-12) (I briefly went over who the 12 tribes were) Under the ephod was a blue robe of the Ephod. It had gold bells and pomegranates all around the bottom hem. (Exodus 39:22-26) And, under the blue robe was a tunic made of fine linen. (Exodus 39:27) That is the clothing for the high priest, let's talk about what was inside the tabernacle. (Exodus 40) The Lord told Moses to set up the tabernacle on the first day of the first month. God told Moses exactly how and where to set everything up. Outside, in the outer courtyard, Moses put the bronze altar or altar of burnt offering. (Exodus 40:29) He offered animal and grain sacrifice to God. He put water in the laver for washing and hung up a screen at the court gate. Whenever Moses, Aaron or his sons went into the temple, they washed their hands and feet first in the laver. Our Bible verse for today: Thus, Moses did; according to all that the Lord had commanded him, so he did. (Exodus 40:7) Moses set up the tent and put the ark of the covenant inside. He put the mercy seat on the ark. He hung the veil between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies. (Exodus 40:3) Moses set up the table of showbread. (Exodus 40:22-23) It had 2 plates with a total of 12 loaves of bread to represent the 12 tribes (flat round circles like pancakes(?). New loaves replaced the old ones every Sabbath. There was also a bowl & pitcher. He added the golden lampstand that had 7 branches on it and lit the lamps with the best olive oil they had. (Exodus 40:24-25) (Exodus 27:20-21) The altar of incense was also inside the Holy Place. They had a special formula to make the incense, and it was used every morning and evening and only used in the tabernacle. (Exodus 40:26-27) (Exodus 30:34-38) There doesn't seem to be any tabernacle visuals available with just the items in the tabernacle, so I used the Sweet Publishing visuals and cropped them to save ink. I wanted the words on them for the students. Whether you use the file folder game or the fill in the blank worksheet, the above visuals are what I wanted so the students can see the picture with the words (and it keeps me from spelling the same words repeatedly). When the cloud covered the tabernacle, the Lord was there and Moses did not enter the tabernacle and the people did not travel. The cloud was above the tabernacle during the day, and the fire was at night through the Israelites journey in the wilderness.(Exodus 40:34-38) My husband and I made the Ark of the Covenant. My husband made the ark to the scale of the guys we found at Dollar Tree. I will post the directions and more pictures later. This was a long lesson to prepare and I ran out of time to write up the info! I read several places there are 50 chapters written just on the tabernacle! God wanted to make sure the people worshipped Him HIS way. He was very clear about how they were to do everything! I decided to update the Tabernacle posters and add new worksheets to correspond with everything. These (and the High Priest outfit) were designed to be used with Aaron's Life. This is Aaron's High Priest outfit. The first is a completed teacher's visual. The worksheets are the same in color and black and white. I added these to teach the High Priest's Breastplate. I originally designed these for 2021 VBS. Please note: I have researched the 12 stone colors extensively. There may be differences because of the Biblical wording and the color of the stones from the area. Their dirt and lands; not ours. It is an interesting study but there are differences in the actual stones. A single stone might have several different colors in the stone itself. There are so many variables. Also, since the original text is read from right to left, that is how I placed the stones; not the English reading of left to right. The Tabernacle has two posters and the same color and black & white student fill-in-the-blank worksheets. I used a basic picture for each item in the tabernacle that we discussed. The inside where the students write the info is blank, so you can add as much or as little as you want. I put the lapbooks together before class, but if you are using at home, or want to use it for several weeks and want to let the kids put them together, the first thing to do is print everything. I usually print on cardstock, especially the cover. Due to a larger class, I have been printing everything but the cover on regular paper. I take the file folder and fold the sides toward the center of the inside line, making sure it is straight along the bottom. That way when I open it up, I have the center which holds a piece of paper and the sides, which holds a half sheet of paper. I lay out the front cover and open it up to draw the folder line on the back of the cover and carefully cut. I use Aleene's Tacky Glue for my projects. Next, lay out the inside parts however you decide looks best for you. I laid out the numbered parts along the side flaps of the folder and put the other questions in the center with the tabernacle drawing. I added the High Priest on the back for reference and it is easy to use for discussion. Sorry, the black & white is not included in this file. Click here to download the updated lapbook. This is the display I used for this lesson. It is the same set for the Resurrection of Jesus. I wrapped up one of the guys with gauze to be Lazarus, used Jesus and the two women. You can see it here. This lesson is about Lazarus and is found in John 11:1-45 and John 12:17-18. He had two sisters named Mary and Martha. They lived in Bethany. Mary and Martha sent for Jesus because Lazarus was sick. The message stated, “the one you love is sick.” Jesus loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus. But when Jesus heard about Lazarus being sick, He stayed two more days where He was. Lazarus died during that time, and he was buried before Jesus could visit him. Jesus told His Disciples that they were going to Judea. They asked Him “Are you sure? The Jews have been wanting to stone you.” Jesus told them it would be all right, He needed to go see their friend Lazarus. Lazarus is sleeping, and I will wake him up. They told Jesus that if Lazarus is sleeping, then he would get better. But Jesus told them that Lazarus was dead. Jesus told them that He was glad they weren’t there so they would believe what they see. And then He told the Disciples "Now, let’s go to him." When Jesus arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was two miles away from Jerusalem. And many of those people had come to be with Martha and Mary to comfort them. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him. Mary stayed at the house. Martha told Jesus that if He would have been there, Lazarus wouldn’t have died. But she said, I know that whatever you ask God, He will give You. Jesus told her that her brother would live again. Jesus asked her if she believed that whoever believed in Him would live even though they died. Martha replied that she believed in Him. “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who came into the world.” After she answered Jesus, Martha secretly went to find her sister Mary and told her that Jesus had come and was looking for her. Immediately, Mary went to Jesus. Jesus wasn’t in town yet; He was waiting for her where He had met Martha. The people who were with her, comforting her, thought she was going to the grave to cry about Lazarus. When Mary came to Jesus, she fell at His feet and told Him that Lazarus wouldn’t have died if He’d been there. When Jesus saw her crying, he felt sorry for her, and He was upset that she was so sad. Jesus asked her where Lazarus was laid at and the people said “Lord, come and see.” vs. Jesus wept. (The shortest verse of the Bible, but very important.) Jesus was upset, even though He knew He would raise him from the dead. It still upset Him. The people said, “See how much He loved Lazarus!” Some of them said if Jesus healed the blind, couldn’t He have kept Lazarus from dying? When they came to the tomb, it was a cave cut into the rock with a stone in front of it. This tells us that Mary, Martha and Lazarus had more money than the average family. This is the family burial place and only the rich could pay to have it cut out of the rock. Jesus was so upset when He came to the tomb. He said, “Take away the stone.” Martha said there is going to be a bad smell since Lazarus has been dead for four days! Jesus told her that she would believe after this. They took the stone away from the tomb and Jesus lifted up His eyes and said “I am thankful that You have heard Me. I know that You always hear Me. Because of these people standing here, I am saying this so that they may believe that You sent Me.” After that, Jesus said really loud “Lazarus, come forth.” Lazarus, who had been dead, came out with the wrappings around his hands and feet and face. Jesus said to unwrap him and the people that were there with Mary and Martha saw what Jesus had done and they believed in Him. The project is a cut and glue of Lazarus coming out of the tomb. I cut the rock, used my craft knife to make the slit for the rock tab and glued the rock cover before class. The students can lift the rock flap and will cut & glue Lazarus. Jesus Picks His Disciples includes the printables for the dozen Disciples egg carton! An oldie but goodie post! poster This week Jesus is going to pick out His helpers. They are called Disciples, which means follower. (Apostle means one who is sent.) Scripture reference: Mark 1:1:14-20; John 1:35-51, Matthew 10:1-8; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:13-16 The Disciples included three sets of brothers: Simon (whom He had named Peter) and Andrew. James and John, Zebedee's sons. James and Thaddeus, sons of Alpheus First is (2) Andrew and (4) John. At about 4 in the afternoon, Jesus talked to Andrew and John. They asked Jesus where He was staying, and He told them to come and see. They spent the rest of the day with Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother Simon and told him that they (Andrew and John) had found Jesus. Then Simon went to Jesus and Jesus told Simon that he would be called (1) Peter which means rock. At the same time, John went to get his brother (3) James. John 1:43-51 Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found (6) Philip and told him to “Follow me.” Philip found (7) Bartholomew. He was also called Nathanael. He asked Philip if anything good could come out of Nazareth and Philip told him to come and see Jesus! They went to Jesus and Jesus greeted them and told Bartholomew “Before Philip called you, I saw you sitting under the fig tree". Bartholomew was amazed and Jesus told him that he would see greater things. Because Jesus had known that Bartholomew was sitting under a fig tree, he knew that Jesus was special! So, we have Simon, now called (1) Peter by Jesus and (2) Andrew his brother. The two brothers (3) James & (4) John. And we have (6) Philip. All of these five Disciples were from Bethsaida, which was a fishing town. People think that (11) Simon was also brought in as a Disciple around the same time. (5) Matthew was a tax collector. He collected taxes outside the city of Capernaum. People who came by him had to pay taxes for average items they traded. The fishermen also paid taxes on their catches. People didn’t like the tax collectors because they overcharged to make extra money for themselves. It was usually a 5% fee, but some things were charged up to 12%. People thought the tax collector's money was so unclean, they didn’t ask for their change! Matthew 9:9 says that Jesus saw Mathew sitting at the tax office and walked up to him and said, “Follow Me.” Matthew did. (9) James, son of Alphaeus & (10) Thaddeus. There isn’t much told to us about them. (8) Thomas is known as Doubting Thomas because he didn’t believe that Jesus, after He died was raised from the dead. (12) Last, we have Judas Iscariot. He is the one that betrayed Jesus. He was the treasurer for the Disciples. (John 12:6) He betrays Jesus for money. We’ll learn more about him later. This lesson combines both Peter's Vision he had on the rooftop and continues with Peter traveling to see Cornelius and teaching him about Jesus. Today we are studying about Cornelius found in Acts 10:1-48. He lived in Caesarea and was a centurion (captain of 100 men) of the Italian Regiment (military). He was faithful and feared God. He gladly gave gifts to the poor and he prayed a lot. About three in the afternoon an angel of God came to him and said, “Cornelius.” He was scared when he saw the angel! The angel told him that God has heard his prayers. The angel told him to "Send for Simon Peter, and he will tell you what to do." The angel left and Cornelius told two servants and a soldier to go to Joppa to get Simon Peter. It was a 10-hour trip. The next day, at about noon, Peter went to the housetop to pray. He was very hungry, and he fell into a trance. He saw the heavens open up and something like a huge sheet tied by its four corners come to earth. It had all different kinds of animals, reptiles and birds on it. Peter wondered what that meant. This happened three times, and then went back up into heaven. (Acts 10:16) While he was thinking about it, the three men sent by Cornelius asked if Peter was there. Peter went down and told them that he was the Peter they were looking for. After they explained why Cornelius sent them, Peter invited them into his house. Peter got up in the morning and prepared to travel with Cornelius’ men. Peter took six Jewish believers along with him (Acts 11:12) on this journey. They split the traveling into a two-day journey from Joppa to Caesarea. When they went into the house, all the people that Cornelius had invited were there to greet Peter. (Acts 10:34) God sent Peter to teach Cornelius and his family. Peter told them that God doesn’t show favoritism. Everyone is treated the same in every nation that fears Him and is faithful to Him. He told them about Jesus and how He died. He said that we are commanded to preach to all people so all can go to Heaven. The thing was that at any other time, Peter and Cornelius wouldn’t be seen together, especially talking to each other because it was unlawful for a Jewish man to associate with someone from another country. (Acts 10:28) But when the people that were at the house of Cornelius heard what Peter had to say, they believed. The last verse (Acts 10:48) says that Peter told them to be baptized in the name of the Lord and then they asked Peter to stay for a few days with them. The 'sheet tied by the 4 corners' is hanging from the ceiling. I used fishing line to hang it. There are 2 dowel rods that the sheet is tied to keep it from sagging, and the fishing line is tied around the dowel rods. Peter's housetop is a piece of plywood on dowel rod legs. White fabric (that won't fray) cut into 12" large squares. This is about what I cut them. It depends on the fabric, and I just cut them to get the least amount of waste. In the picture, you see I used a white felt, and cut the squares into 18-inch pieces. (Picture 1) Cut two 40" lengths of fishing line, and tie to the opposite corners of the 'sheet'. (Picture 2) I pulled the fishing line up in the center of both pieces and made a loop to gather them. You can give the kids a dowel rod to hang it on to make it go up and down easier. The students will add any animals you hand out and take home their animals they brought. (I sent a note home with them last week and sent email reminders during the week) They can raise and lower the sheet like the vision. Click here to print the note from last week. It is a very basic list with animals that are in the Bible or easily recognized animals. It is not intended to be an in-depth list. This includes the color and black & white. Click here to download. These posters are more of a teacher's visual when discussing clean and unclean and were used with the above student handout chart of clean and unclean animals. Remember, this is intended for early elementary and is not an in-depth adult study on the laws God made for clean and unclean. There is a very basic outline that can be used with the posters and this lesson. Click here to download. This Bible lesson has so many good points that can be discussed. One point that Luke keeps making in Acts is that when people hear the Gospel, they believe in Jesus and immediately are baptized. Another is that Jesus loves everyone and salvation is for everyone. Since those points are made repeatedly in the following lessons, I took this time to talk about some of the old laws from the Old Testament, and some of the new laws that came into effect when Jesus died on the cross. We discussed the old law of sacrificing animals, and we are very thankful we don't have to do that! But, the new law includes baptism. We still worship, but the old law was on the Sabbath, being Saturday. Exodus 31:16 And, the new law on the first day of the week, being Sunday. (Acts 20:7) We mostly talked about clean and unclean food. The food choices were part of the new laws. I had a bigger table and more animals, but this will give you an idea of what I did. I gathered up animals, even my granddaughters Fisher Price ones, and the kids looked at their charts and we put the animal with the correct tag. You can print the clean and unclean tags here. These hanging monkeys and the snakes are from Dollar Tree. They LOVE the monkeys! I hang them on my arms and let them pick their color. But, the object is to discuss the clean vs. unclean according to God. These rats and bats are only sold around October. The first packs are at Wal Mart, the second ones in the mesh bags are at Dollar Tree. They love those, because they glow in the dark! Jesus Walks on Water I have the last two lessons out of sequence. That's what happens when you go on vacation and then try to catch up! So, Jesus walking on water comes before His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. I'm not including an Easter lesson because at our church we have a sunrise service and no Sunday School that day. Here's the lesson on Jesus' Walking on Water. Print these out on card stock. I usually cut them out prior to the class because the younger children have a hard time cutting them out. Today's lesson finishes up the book of Genesis and Joseph! Next quarter will be Moses and there is so much to learn from him! We continued our Joseph in Egypt lesson with the kids wearing the Egyptian outfits. There is a quick printable project for today. It is a good reminder to love God no matter what is happening in your life. Joseph stayed faithful while he was a servant and stayed faithful even with all the power he was given in Egypt. There are so many lessons that could be learned from Joseph & Moses! Thanks for stopping by! Review: This is our last week that we will be learning about Joseph. His brothers sold him, and the traders took him to Egypt where he was sold again to Potiphar. Last week, the butler and chief baker were put in prison with Joseph. Joseph told them what their dreams meant. When Pharaoh needed his dreams interpreted, the butler remembered Joseph. Joseph told Pharaoh what the dreams meant. They were going to have 7 good years and then 7 years of famine. (Not enough food) Pharaoh put Joseph second in command; Joseph only had to answer to Pharaoh. God was with Joseph. He had two sons. Joseph stored up all the food he could during the 7 good years and today, our lesson is during the 7 famine years. This week's lesson is found in Genesis 42-50. During the famine, Joseph’s family is worried about food and decided to go to Egypt to buy corn. Only ten of the brothers went, Benjamin didn’t go. Joseph is the governor (or prince) of Egypt. Remember, everyone had to talk to Joseph in order to buy food in Egypt. When they went before Joseph, and bowed, he recognized them, but they didn’t know who Joseph was. Joseph asked them “Why are you here” and the brothers told Joseph that they wanted to buy food. Joseph said “No, you are spies.” They told Joseph that they were brothers and the youngest was still at home with their father. Joseph told them to send one brother home to get the youngest and the others would have to stay in Egypt until they proved they were not spies. The brothers started talking to each other saying that this was punishment for what they did to Joseph. Joseph was using an interpreter so the brothers thought he couldn’t understand them, but when Joseph heard what they said, he had to turn away to cry. Joseph tied up Simeon and had his brethren's sacks filled with the corn and he ordered the money they brought to be put in the sacks. When the brothers went to feed the animals, they found the money. Joseph's brothers almost passed out! (Genesis 42:28) They were so scared to find the money in the corn sacks! They told their father that the governor of Egypt talked mean to them and accused them of being spies. When the food ran out again, the brothers worried about returning to Egypt for more food. But Egypt was the only country with food to sell. They told Jacob that the governor told them not to return unless they brought their youngest brother. The brothers returned to Egypt and told Joseph’s servant that they had returned with the money that was in their sacks last time and enough money to buy more food. Simeon was brought out to them. Then, the brothers were taken into Joseph’s house and waited until noon to see Joseph. They bowed at his feet (just as Joseph's dreams said they would!) and Joseph asked how they were and is their father still alive? They told Joseph that their father is good and then Joseph looked up and saw his young brother, Benjamin. Joseph had to leave, because he was so happy to see Benjamin, he wanted to cry. Later, Joseph fed his brothers and sent them gifts. Joseph sent Benjamin 5 times the gifts that he sent to his other brothers. Joseph had their sacks filled full of food. Again, he had their money put in the sacks and he had his silver cup put in Benjamin’s sack. After just a little time passed, Joseph had his servants follow the brothers and ask them if they repaid Joseph by stealing from him. Joseph's servants searched every sack and found the money and silver cup. When Joseph told them that the one’s sack that held the silver cup would have to stay and be a servant, they said that they couldn’t do that. They told Joseph that their father would die if they came back without Benjamin. Joseph started to cry. He sent all of his servants out and with only his brothers left, Joseph told them that he was Joseph, their brother! He said not to be upset, because it was God’s plan for him to be in Egypt during this famine. Joseph hugged Benjamin and told them to bring their families to Egypt to live because there was still 5 years of famine, and he didn’t want them to die. Joseph gave his brothers wagons and food to get back home. When the brothers told Jacob that Joseph was still alive and governor of Egypt, Jacob couldn’t believe what they were saying. Jacob decided to go see Joseph. He was 130 years old. Joseph climbed in his chariot to go see Jacob when he arrived in Egypt, and they were so happy to see each other! Jacob went before Pharaoh and after they talked, Joseph took his family out to the best land in Egypt. Pharaoh told them to live there. Jacob was able to meet Joseph’s 2 sons Manasseh & Ephraim. Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years before he died (147 years). Joseph was 110 when he died, and he was buried in Egypt. For the kids take home, I used the above brown bags (far right, at Hobby Lobby) and we put corn inside. I found the clear glasses at Dollar Tree and used the silver paint to paint them. I gave them a money bag for that part of the lesson, then they added the silver cup at the correct time. The brown money bags I purchase on eBay a lot cheaper, and they come from out of the country, so give yourself time if you plan to buy them that way. For the teacher visuals I used during the lesson, I found the silver cup at Party City, I used the same money bags the kids were given. I found the bags at Hobby Lobby for $1.99, in their assorted bag department. Then I added the corn (Purchased at TSC, or local farm supply store) into both bags. For the first bag, I just added the money bag, then the second bag, I added the money bag and the small silver cup. Today's project is a quick one but is a great reminder to love God and our family. Joseph put God first and obey Him, and he still loved his brothers even though they sold him into slavery. These are in black & white so they can be printed on color cardstock/paper. Cut the 2 large hearts as one so it can be folded in half. I used a hole punch and added ribbon so the kids can hang on these on their door handles. Or you can just fold them like a card. The kids will have heart stickers to add to them, or you can let them draw and color hearts. (The photo shows the front & back.) You can print it here. Click here to print.
