Every year my little ones are surprised and saddened when they are taught of the injustices that people of the past faced. They are inspired by the bravery that each hero had in their fight to make changes in our society. My heart melts to see the compassion in my students' eyes as I teach them about a topic that can sometimes be uncomfortable to discuss. Martin Luther King Jr. becomes a quick hero, Rosa Parks is instantly incredible and Ruby Bridges is almost like another student that is in our own class! Here is the journey we took to learn about Martin and his friends... We read lots of books. We watched a simple BrainPOP Jr. {found here} and this youtube video. Another online resource is this Scholastic News Magazine. We learned about Martin's Rainbow of Dreams. The students got to create a bracelet to help remember Martin's dream. I loved how they wore the bracelet for the rest of the week! We completed several activities and crafts from this unit. We also did a Martin Luther King Jr. directed drawing...I always love how they turn out! The students shared the dreams they have for making the world a better place too. Another activity that we completed was inspired by lots of pins on pinterest and this book! {Again, I can not take credit for this idea...I saw tons of pins on pinterest and I stole the idea.} We read the book and reflected on how things look so much better with lots of colors and diversity. The kids definitely got the connection! {Idea inspired by Read Write Sing!} Grab your free copy of the activity and the bulletin board pieces by clicking on the picture above! {This is an editable file (so you can personalize it with your own name) that you will open in powerpoint!} Looking for more resources to teach about MLK? Check out these on TPT... {FREEBIE} Hope this post helps with your MLK plans! Happy Weekend!!

This Ruby Bridges Unit Study is a fantastic way to learn about the life of Ruby Bridges, a child who just wanted to go to school and learn.
Last week my teamies and I decided to implement some silent reading time in our classroom. According to the National Panel on Reading children who spend time reading independently grow in fluency. With all of the reading programs in our schools we sometimes forget to teach our kiddos to LOVE reading! Well it is our mission to teach these firsties to love reading. So now each firstie has their own reading pillow and reading bag filled with books they choose. (I forgot to take a picture of their reading bag, but will try to get one up tomorrow.) Who doesn't like to be comfy when they read a good book? Take a look at these guys reading and loving it! When my reading coach saw the picture she said, "That is what readers should look like." We continued with our Ruby Bridges study today and finished our anchor chart and craftivity. Take a look at them. They are precious! You can go HERE or HERE to get Ruby. Hope you guys had a fabulous day and that tomorrow is even more fabulous!!

During Social Studies we are learning about famous people. We learned about Martin Luther King Jr. last week (perfect for Martin Luther King Jr. Day). This week we learned about Ruby Bridges! She is the perfect person for my students to learn about and reiterate how brave and strong she had to be during such a difficult time period. She is also perfect because she is close to my students' age, so they can try to relate to her and how she felt at that time. Ruby was so brave and showed my students that they can be brave too. We read this great book (picture above) called The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles. My kids loved it and held on to every word as I read. Then, we did a fun activity to help us remember the story and discuss it. You can see my students hard at work coloring the two school houses. One school was Ruby Bridge's and one was ours. Then, we discussed how our schools were the same and different. I found this cute and FREE activity from First Grade and Flip Flops. I put it together a little differently than she showed, but I thought it turned out cute! This was a fun activity and really helped my students better understand how far our country has come.

Hey friends! Hope you all have had a marvelous weekend!! It is finally sunny here in FL! We have had some craziness with rain and cold. It made my kids really In the most kid friendly way!! This past week was also way crazy! Friday we had our 100th day! It was such a fun day! I found the dress at Goodwill! Can't believe I paid (although I felt good I was helping those through Goodwill) to look old. Even my sweet intern, Mrs. Diaz got into the spirit. Look at my team!! They were fabulous! One teacher borrowed her grandmother's wig and clothes. I couldn't stop laughing. Some of my kids really got into the spirit, too! Here are some pictures of our day! Make our 100th Day hat! Writing 100 words! Hide the 100 100th Day Portrait 100th Day Glasses I loved how their portraits came out! I put them up in the hallway! Here are a few that just tickled me! Check out the hat!! All blinged out! Love those eyebrows! Love her hair and the Mrs. ______! Is he not the cutest?? (kinda looks like the KCF guy!) love his wrinkles! The hat and beard is just too precious!!! All in all it was a loud and busy day! We got it all in with 10 minutes to spare at the end of the day! I just wanted a Calgon moment at the end of the day! LOL! This week we are starting off February with Black History and comparing and contrasting Ruby Bridges and Rosa Parks. I admit that sometimes teaching kids who really don't know much about differences can be difficult. I mean, to them everyone is the same. They play with everyone (well, almost!) and everyone is their friend. I almost hate to bring up history's ugly smear of segregation and discrimination but it s our history. I truly love the story of Ruby Bridges! I usually start off with this short clip: We discuss words like segregation and discrimination and tie that to our learning from MLK. I will be using some simple activities from my little mini-unit that I'd like to share with you! Click picture to download your FREEBIE!!! I have included this cute little compare and contrast craftivity: I cannot wait for my kiddos to work on these this week! Well, off to be a domestic goddess now and make dinner! In the meantime, I will be back later this week with another writing idea for you! I hope I can persuade you to come back! LOL! Have a great week!
