Yikes!! We're halfway through the year already, and halfway through summer too. The Chaser blocks all came together this week, and are now a completed flimsy. These were a great RSC block, inspired by a blogger's post for RSC in 2023. They can be made with any size squares, but I had lots of 2.5" squares already cut from scraps, so that's what I used. The quilt top is 40 x 56 as is, which would be OK for a kid quilt. But I might decide to make it bigger with a border, or maybe add another row of blocks down one side to make it slightly wider. In the meantime it's hanging in the closet, waiting for it's turn. The Fat Quarter Shop 2024 Liberty Box project is done now except for the 2.5" border I'm adding all around. The pattern called for a 5" white border, but I decided to do a narrower white border. My photo outside isn't very good as the sky was so grey and overcast, but the blues are a soft medium blue. This will make a nice Quilt of Valor I think - but for a female veteran since there are flowers in that panel. Bear Creek Quilting is hosting a mystery quilt, and I just couldn't resist jumping in on it. The instructions gave yardage for 1 print, and a light and dark of 2 different colors. The first month's clue was 4 blocks (12.5") made with the print and the 2 darker shades of the colors we chose. There is a lighter blue/teal and a creamy light gold that I'll be using in this too. My blues lean toward teal a bit. I don't need any new projects of course, but this is only 1 clue per month so it should quite manageable. I have managed to finish off 2 quilts this year from my RSC sewing. Both should have arrived at their new homes in Vermont. This one now lives with my sister Joanne. This one should arrive today at my Mom's. That leaves these collections of blocks that should be sewn together at some point. A couple are from previous years. 16 patches. These will probably be added to next year unless I need a quick quilt for something. Birds in the air - this is half of them from the drawer. I have enough 6 inch blocks to make a 80x80 quilt. crumb blocks.... some are 10 inches and some are 12 inches. churn dash. I remember making one quilt out of these blocks already years ago. The rest of the blocks that didn't go into the top quilt. I see I need to make a yellow one. Em was laying them out.... seems she thinks I need to make more! Sweet Confetti blocks. Stashbuster blocks. The kids have since moved things around to a more 'pleasing' layout according to them! Linking up with the RSC Challenge. Last night was the night to join in with Cheryll's Friday Night With Friends. It took me a while to decide what to work on, and finally decided it was the perfect time to start adding the borders to my Splendid Sampler 2 blocks. It gives me a good idea on how the quilt will look and I'm pleased with the green fabric choice. There are several different green tones in the blocks, but they look fine with the borders. Twenty done, eighty to go.... and still a few more blocks to be made. This is part of my OMG for February. What is it with cats? Joey was sleeping in his basket beside me for the whole time I was stitching, cutting and pressing. As soon as I put a block on the floor he was up and on the blocks. That wouldn't be so bad until the claws came out. He was not going to use my quilt blocks as a scratching board. Naughty boy! I realise he just wanted to have his photo on the blog, but he was moved along before he could damage anything. I did give him some cuddles later. After we had dinner, I decided to work on my UFO project for the WOOFA Challenge. I added five of the red triangles, so making progress. During the week I made my RSC blocks for this month. The colour is orange. There aren't any really orange fabrics in my 1930s stash, but these aren't too bad. I quite enjoy making these pineapple blocks. I can't say the same about my drunkard path blocks. I still find them rather fiddly and they are ending up being VERY drunkard path blocks. Not to worry, they are challenging me, which is not such a bad thing. I'll be linking up with Sew Scrappy for these.

I may be a week late, I finished my reds last Sunday. I only added 3 new RSC projects this year. I started out with a goal of one new project, but fell off the wagon on that note. The three new projects are all bundled together here on the design wall, A great goal would be to finish these in the same year they are started. No excuse this time! February's Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) is pink!!! I'm doing 6 x 6 postage stamp blocks this year, using my 2 1/2" collection, mostly cut from leftover bits as I'm cutting out quilts!!! As you can see in the photo below, pink is the color I have the 2nd most of, after January's blues!!! ⤵️ Judy @ Busy Hands Are Happy Hands asked last month how I'm assembling these blocks, so I thought I'd share that this month. First of all I lay out my squares on my design boards. If you haven't made any design boards yet, go to Lori Holt's Bee In My Bonnet Design Board tutorial and make yourself several. They are super handy and super cute!!! Get your foam board from the Dollar Tree. I'm using 15" square design boards for this project. I have 10" and 20" square boards, too, that I use for smaller and larger blocks. It's handy to have an assortment, as you'll notice on Lori's video--it looks like she has dozens of them in 4 sizes!!! Here's a quilter who makes her design boards using glue stick and fusible web, rather than a glue gun: YouTube. And another similar vid here: YouTube. I've switched to the fusible web making style, as it is easier to work with, especially using a mini iron in the process. I take the loaded design board to my sewing machine and "web" my block together. Bonnie Hunter coined this word for sewing quilt blocks together. It's basically chain piecing without breaking the thread--I do the vertical rows first, beginning on the left hand side. Then at the ironing board, I press the seams in the opposite direction by row, starting with down for the back right hand row, up for the next row, etc. This gives me, for the next round of sewing, 3 rows where the top seam is up and 2 rows where it's down. Seams nest best when the top seam is up, so there's a bit of an advantage to having 3 rows oriented that way. Next sew the horizontal rows. With the nested seams, it's a snap to match the intersections! Then I "set" each seam and press them all the same direction. That's my method! Having eight design boards to work on at once allows me to spread out the duplicate prints and stack the design boards for future sewing time. Don't you love when a plan comes together? Night Vision is a new-to-me block that I just began making this year for RSC. I saw a picture online of this one and just HAD to add it to my plans for the year. It's really just Flying Geese rotating around a center square. This week I added the 3 new yellow blocks to the mix, and couldn't resist a sample layout. Look what happens when they are layed out together! I'm so excited about this one! The more colors are added, the more interesting this will look I think. The bonus triangles trimmed from goose corners have become Pinwheels. They are only 4.5" square unfinished - and I have no firm plan yet for them. However, they might end up in an outer border for Night Vision. Some ideas are percolating. A UFO was finished - with yellow binding. This is Twinkle Star, an RSC set of blocks from previous years. This is one of my favorite star blocks to make, so I know there will be another one of these in my future. It's so cheerful. There was a lot more yellow happening this week. String Beads were made. I've been keeping a stack of phone book page paper cut in 5" squares next to my machine. As I've been sewing lately I've worked on the string sections as Leaders/Enders. There are still a couple more yellow string squares plus some other colors too that are ready for the framing strips. I'm using scrappy neutrals for the frames, in creams, tans and whites. I totally enjoyed some extended sewing time this week, and had a lot of fun with yellow. Kitty blocks, 16-patch churn dash, Dutchman's Puzzle, Zippers, and Spinners were all sewn and added to their respective collections. This years final RSC colour was yellow and I completed my yellow Dresden on Thursday. Then came the fun part of getting out my 20 Dresdens and playing around with them - fortunately we had dry grass yesterday so I was able to lay them out in the garden. And here they are all machined together. It rained last night so it had to be the bed for todays photo. I am very happy with how these are all looking. Fortunately I have enough of the grey fabric to make a decent size border so I plan to spend 2021/2 making little hexadens to dance around. I will need to source some yellow spot fabric for the centres though as I have used up all that I had. I am linking up with Angela at Soscrappy - thank you Angela for your inspiration. March's colour is red for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Here is this month's edition of my RSC buttefly: RSC Butterfly in red - March I think I spent more time pondering the wing design than actually sewing it this month. I got hung up on the idea of using squares and rectangles I cut a couple of years ago when I thought cutting up my scraps into standard sizes was a good idea and would help me use them. (That idea didn't work for me, and two years later my little trimmed scraps are all still sitting forlornly in the bins.) Once I let go of that idea and opened up my thinking to any red scraps in my stash, I found a design I liked pretty quickly. The upper wing bases are pieced in strips, with a common fabric pieced on the bias at the end of each strip. I also though of piecing a checkerboard sort of design for the lower wings, but decided that would be too much going on in one block. Maybe next month I'll focus on the lower wings. It seems that I have taken on a number of Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts this year. So I have been keeping pretty busy making all my pink blocks. The first blocks I made this week were the ones made from my Well Suited pattern. This is the first module of my Scrap Mixology pattern series. When I make my flying geese, I immediately turned the bonus triangles into those cute little pinwheels. I am not sure yet what I am going to do with them. I also made the blocks I have been planning using my Two Bits pattern. I have been wanting to make some scrappy churn dash blocks but I decided to use this Scrap Mixology concept to float them in a scrappy low volume background. Here are the two projects so far... As you can see these Scrap Mixology patterns all make great RSC blocks. Each pattern shows you lots of options on how to come up with your own unique quilt design with just some simple changes. Some of the selvages in the under 18 inches bagGoal number nine on my December list was to figure out a block to make each month for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) that Angela over at Scrap Happy hosts each year. I didn't participate last year as I hadn't finished either of the projects that I had begun the two years that I did participate. I have missed playing along though! Block exampleI haven't finished either quilt; but, that could happen sometime this year! I've been collecting selvages for years. The container where I store them is swelling so it is time to begin making the selvages into something useable!!! I began collecting selvages because the graphics are interesting.It seemed wasteful to through them away! Gluing the selvages togetherI've been thinking about a block. A couple months ago I bought a background fabric. I pulled a pattern that I have saved from the January/February 2021 issues of Quiltmaker magazine. Yesterday, I began a sample block. Adding another selvage First, I cut a selected selvage into four, four inch segments. I cut the same fabric four times because I wanted this block to feel "planned." I made a pencil mark on the back of the selvage a quarter inch from the edge. I placed a fine line of glue dots in the penciled area. Pressing the glue dryI placed the next selvage on the glue dots and pressed it into place. I waited a few minutes. Then I pressed the strip to dry the glue. Securing the selvageAfter the glue was secure, I stitched about an eighth of an inch from each selvedge edge to "make" my fabric. I kept adding segments until my section was four inches square. If my selvages are too similar in value, I will need to throw in a "rouge" to liven up the block. When I have a remaining segment that is too short to be cut into four equal pieces, I'll add it to the selvages strings I began piecing before the pandemic. I didn't and still don't have a plan for the strings. . .yet! Four blocks ready to be assembled.I auditioned the four blocks against the grey background and I wasn't moved. I didn't like it against a cream background either. Different yellow fabrics for the backgroundI decided yellow would be a cheerful neutral. I'll make at least one block each month in the color that Angela posts. Sorting the selvages is messy; but, worth the effort. I think that these will be fun to make. I'll use a variety of the yellow fabrics. . . .at least that is what I think at this moment! Linking to Cynthia at Oh Scrap.
