This year our talk in the Ward Conferences is about finding unity. We decided not to worry about a PowerPoint presentation this year so we just did posters instead with a scriptures and quotes. Most of our questions were based on the quotes. Additionally, I wanted to keep the handouts simple as well so I designed a 5x7" quote that I printed at Walgreens (it's in English and Spanish). Our annual birthday party for the Relief Society was held on March 26, 2013. The theme was "Random Acts of Kindness" with a Cat-in-the-Hat twist. All Relief Society sisters and Young Women were invited to attend. The cultural hall was transformed into the land of Katroo (where "they sure know how to say 'Happy Birthday to You!'") Each table featured some familiar characters from the stories of Dr. Seuss. Which table was your favorite? One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish Horton Hears a Who! Green Eggs and Ham How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Sneetches The Cat in the Hat The Lorax Oh, the Places You'll Go! ABC We enjoyed a scrumptious salad bar with all of the fixings---nestled amongst the Truffula Trees. We also took advantage of the conversation starters found at each table to become better acquainted with one another. Of course, a birthday party wouldn't be complete without a game or two! In our favorite game, teams raced to pop their balloons and unscramble the words found inside to recreate quotes about kindness. Here are the quotes we used: Give yourself entirely to those around you. Be generous with your blessings. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal. ---Steve Marboli When we treat people merely as they are, they will remain as they are. When we treat them as if they were what they should be, they will become what they should be. ---Thomas S. Monsoon You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. ---Ralph Waldo Emerson No one has ever become poor by giving. ---Anne Frank I have wept in the night For the shortness of sight That to somebody’s need made me blind; But I never have yet Felt a tinge of regret For being a little too kind. ---Source unknown; quoted by Thomas S. Monson The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer. ---Mahatma Gandhi Love one another as Jesus loves you. Try to show kindness in all that you do. Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought, For these are the things Jesus taught. ---Janice Kapp Perry Kindness, love, patience, understanding, and unity will increase as we serve, while intolerance, jealousy, envy, greed, and selfishness decrease or disappear. ---Carlos Amado Often, the greatest manifestations of love are the simple acts of kindness and caring we extend to those we meet along the path of life. ---Joseph B. Wirthlin After the games, welcomed some of our soon-to-be-graduating Young Women into Relief Society and heard some uplifting thoughts from our Relief Society President Sheri Lloyd. A birthday party would also not be complete without birthday cake. Not only were these cakes festive and a feast for the eyes, but they were also delightfully delicious! Thanks to Tamara Heath for the wonderful birthday cakes (three different flavors)! The highlight of the evening was the slideshow depicting some of the acts of kindness our Relief Society sisters, Young Women, and their families performed over the month of March. These seemingly insignificant acts are only a small part of what we do on a daily basis as daughters of God and followers of Jesus Christ. (See video below.) Heartfelt thanks to the committee and the many others who helped with the festivities. Happy 171st Birthday to the Relief Society!

Are you planning a Relief Society Activity? Here are 30+ Fun relief society activity ideas your congregation will LOVE!
I think we should all be just "tickled pink" with how wonderful the "This Little Piggy" activity turned out! We had 5 presenters teach us mini classes on topics that went along with the nursery rhyme. So here we go, say it with me: This little piggy went to market. . .and got a 72 hour kit. Amy Jukes presented a lesson on what we can do to be prepared for a local disaster that included information on what to put in a 72 hour kit, what to carry it in, how to put together an emergency binder for your family, and information on how to have practice drills and rotate your supplies. Click on these links for her handouts: Ultimate 72 Hour Kit Essential Documents for Binder Grab & Go Bags This little piggy stayed home. . .and got organized. Kristie Cummings gave a lesson filled with great ideas to help us get organized along with some great advice: Don't bite off more than you can chew. Break your organizing down into small projects so you aren't overwhelmed with the thought of doing it. Do it in a way that makes it fun for you. Here are links to her handouts. Simply Organized Simplify This little piggy had roast beef. . .had summer smoothies. Kim Strong presented us with some great ideas of how we can eat better and live healthier. We were able to sample 2 different highly nutritious smoothies - AND THEY TASTED GREAT!!!! Who knew?!?! There may have even been some spinach and flax seed hidden in them somewhere ;) Click here for Kim's Summer Smoothie Ingredients and Handout This little piggy had none. . .no stress that is. Heather Evans gave us some tips on how to reduce stress which included ideas on the importance of getting a good nights rest (i.e. don't watch TV right before bed), eating well, and relaxation techniques - yes there are simple yoga moves we all can do. And GOOD NEWS there are great deals to be found on massages ladies - you may want to get one. She also taught us some aromatherapy concepts. When you smell an essential oil, if it appeals to you, it is most likely a compound that your body needs. The scent of certain essential oils can help us to relax. Aveda has some great ones to try. There is also a company called Aromaland that has some good ones - a few drops of "Take Five" in the shower before you turn it on will turn your bathroom into a steam therapy spa! Click here for Heather's Top Ten Tips to Reduce Stress This little piggy cried wee! wee! wee! all the way home. . .as she discovered lots of fun places to visit in Dallas this summer. Last but not least, Janette Church - a lifelong Texan y'all - gave us the heads up and howdy do on what to see and do (for free or close to it) around town. Here is a handout to help you track it all down: Fun Around Dallas Handout Dinosaur Valley State Park, Glen Rose, TX Fossil Rim Wildlife Center And check out this YouTube video of Dinosaur Valley State Park. Many thanks to all who presented and helped to put on this amazing activity! I am super glad that this little piggy did not stay home :)

Last Thursday i helped put on the annual service auction at church. It is one of our most anticipated and well attended activities, and rightly so, its so fun! This was my kind of game! Loved it! We played this at our Young Womens stake meeting last Thursday evening. (This is a semi-annual gathering we have as leaders of the YW in our church, to give us support and insight and help. For more info, go here.) Picture 2 rows of chairs facing each other. We each had one minute to ask anything we wanted to the woman across from us. After one minute, all of us on the first row shifted to the next chair. Then proceeded to interview the next one. In about 15 minutes I got to know 15 different women (or was it 10 women, I didn't count)....I really did feel as though I knew them a little after that short amount of time. I don't usually like games, but this one was for me. Because like I always say, there is nothing more interesting than people. I could have done this for hours. I think this would make a great game for any party. Perhaps even a combined Young Women/Young Mens combined activity? No? You don't think teenage boys would like this? We were given this list of questions, just to give us ideas of what to ask: In my next life, I think I would like to have a career as an interviewer. I love asking questions and listening to responses. Which brings me to a dream I have, that I would like to bring to life...more on that in a few days or so.
