I recently received this question via email, and the interested doll maker was asking wether I “pad” my doll’s eyes or not. So I thought it a good idea to bring yet another of my lengthy posts but this time on doll’s eyes, with specific emphasis on embroidered ones.

This trio is made to order. Meet Ralph, Maisie and Winnaker, our MINI Hidden House Dolls. This is our most recent set which is smaller than the first sets we made. We call them the Mini Hidden Dolls :-) After creating the larger (11-12 inch) Hidden House trio, a few people asked if we would ever make a smaller version. Due to the difficult jointing, I wasn't sure. But then Ae and I decided we could make smaller dolls but they just won't have the same complicated joints. These dolls do have the swivel head and hinged foot like the larger dolls but are ball jointed at the shoulders and hips and hinge jointed at the elbows and knees. These dolls measure between 7 inches (Maisie) to just under 8 inches (Ralph). This sale is for all 3 dolls but if you are interested in purchasing just one, please contact me. The price for an individual doll is $550. The Story: To quote Martin Waddell: "I was read to a lot as a child by people who knew how to read stories. These stories came alive for me, and the love of story has stayed with me ever since." Everyone has a favorite children's book. Some love books from their childhood. Books that were read to them by a teacher, a parent or grandparent. Others favorite books that they've read to children. Me, I fell in love with The Hidden House by Martin Waddell because of the three main characters – Maisie, Ralph and Winnaker – 3 wooden dolls who were created by a lonely old man (Bruno). It's the simplest story, told in very few words. There are no witches or wizards. Nothing outlandish happens to the dolls. In fact, they never leave their house. I'm not even certain there's a moral to their story.. But the simple story is so sweet and endearing that it's impossible not to fall in love w/ Maisie, Ralph and Winnaker. Several years ago, Ae and I made the 3 dolls for a client. But each doll was over 3 feet tall. I have always wanted to re-make them in a smaller version so they could be held and cherished in the small hands of a child. We believe we're the only people who have ever carved this trio. I did see a set made from cloth. The Details: All three dolls were hand carved by my husband/partner Ae and dressed and painted by me, Holly. Wood – they are carved from Teak. Height – Winnaker and Ralph both stand just under 8 inches tall. Clothing & Painting – I have hand stitched all their clothing using vintage and new cotton. Winnaker's sweater and Maisie's basket were crocheted by my friend Loong and Winnnaker's little backpack was made by an artist here in Thailand. It even opens and is lined on the inside :-) I wanted to make their outfits a fusion of the clothing at the start of the book and at the end. I've painted all the dolls to be a combo of the start of the book and the repainted dolls at the end of the story. I didn't want to antique them – that will come with time! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Ordering time and deposit: These dolls are very time intensive to create. To complete a set takes about 6-8 weeks. We ask for a 60% deposit at time of ordering and the remainder when they are finished. We will send photos so you can see your set in full before you make the final payment.

I couldn't work in my sewing room today, so I decided to do some stockinette application. I had several dolls that I wanted to add stockinette. The doll below had been a cloth doll and I experimented with applying stockinette bandage materials. It ended up being far too prominent, so I tried to put another layer of smoother stockinette on. The stockinette didn't work because I tried to use regular Elmer's glue, and it doesn't dry fast enough to grab the fabric. So I pulled it off and smoothed the glue to let it dry and will try again with a faster drying glue. Here are the other three that were slated for covering with fabric. I was able to do the smaller two dolls. Here's what the little ones look like. The front one is any Izzy inspired creation and the back one has had more experiments than I can count. By the time I got them done I was DONE with Adventures with Glue. I'll let this dry, and then will put a layer of gesso on the fabric.
