For our last project of the Art Room year, I was looking for a quick and easy project that could be completed in one 90-minute class, and which would touch on some of the techniques and skills we learned this past year. I opted for this cute, easy and pretty much fool-proof dandelion project. It incorporates pen and line techniques, illustration, and watercolor techniques.... all things my 6-7 year old age group covered this year. We began by looking at simple illustrations of dandelions. We noted their lines, the shape of their 'dandelion puff' (the white puffy stage of the dandelion, after it's seeded), and the shape and structure of the individual seedheads, which look like downey parachutes. We discussed how, when the wind blows, these seedheads blow off the puff and dance through the wind, disseminating the attached seed elsewhere. I demonstrated on the white board how we might illustrate seedheads. Students were given many options, from a double horseshoe shape, to a simple dotted shape. One student opted for little heart shapes. Drawing We began with watercolor paper, the borders of which I had pre-taped, and a pencil. I did a guided drawing demo on the board. Students had to draw three dandelions. For good composition, one should be larger than the others, and none overlapping, in the left half of their paper. We began with three simple circles, and added stems to these. We noted that dandelion stems are generally not super straight, but may have a slight curve to them. Then we sectioned our circles off into lines, the way you would cut a pizza or a pie. These initial lines are the outer seedheads. We then added extra shorter lines in between these longer lines, (slicing the pie even smaller) and made these shorter seedheads. Our goal was to draw full, fluffy dandelion puffs. Students each chose what kind of downey parachute shape they wanted at the end of their seedheadss. Most opted for a different shape for each of their three dandelions. Just like in our pen and line techniques classes earlier this year, students were encouraged to draw carefully, neatly connecting their line points, and thinking of symmetry and even spacing. Where puffs looked too 'naked' students were encouraged to add some extra seedheads for a fuller puff. Next, we drew a few detached seedheads dancing in the wind. These should be dancing towards the right side of our paper. For good composition, their placement should be varied with some upside-down, some sideways and one trailing off towards the top right corner. This carries our eyes all the way to the other end of the paper. We noted that the parachute shape on these should match the ones on our dandelion puffs.... since they originate from these puffs. My students got this concept without a problem! We traced all our lines with a fine permanent marker and erased our pencil lines. For that added illustration quality, we chose to write something whimsy at the bottom of our paper. Since these students are very young, and many are English as a second or third language learners, I wrote a few options on the board for them to copy, like 'Wish', 'Make a Wish', and 'Summer'. Rubber Cement Resist I opted to use rubber cement on our puffs to resist the paint. Rubber cement is a rather unfriendly glue which should not be breathed in. Because I did not want my young students working with this material I decided to apply it myself to their puffs. I worked at the wide open window sill and work briskly, applying the glue to each student's puffs as they brought their work to me after finishing with their pencil erasing. We then dried these with the blow dryer and moved on to our background. Watercolor Background We used a wet-on-wet watercolor technique for our background. We dropped dabs of 2-3 analogous colors on our wet background, moved the paint around a bit, but not overworking it. We applied salt and dabbed with a tissue for texture. There were then dried with the blow dryer. Lastly, we rubbed the rubber cement glue off of our dandelions using a rubber cement eraser. I recommend using an eraser specifically for removing rubber cement, as regular pencil erasers will likely simply glide over the glue, smearing and smudging what's nearby, without properly lifting the glue. The lifted glue revealed beautifully white dandelions beneath our watercolored backgrounds. Finally, we removed the taped borders for a crisp edge. Voila! A quick, fun and summery project incorporating pen and line, illustration and watercolor techniques. A great entry into summer! Students aged 6 and 7

Bible ABC's: Y is for Youngest Jacob (& Esau) These lessons can be used without the alphabet theme. Consider these an update with new ideas and printables! So... I kinda went rogue and as I was writing the lesson! I couldn't stop because it seemed like chapters 25-28 all flow together. Each section is short, but is usually divided... especially for younger students. Although this contains the stew trade, the blessing switch and Jacob's ladder dream, they can be divided by chapter. Or, taught as one lesson. The Fact Wheel briefly reviews their birth, the stew trade and the birthright event. Color and black & white are included. These can be used for Jacob and any other appropriate lesson and were kept plain intentionally for this purpose. These are a reminder that God is there for us. Students can color or paint the designs on the banner, door hanger and bookmark. Stickers can be added. String or ribbon can be added to the banner to hang and on the bookmark. A Word Search for chapters 25-28 is included. A stew maze, dot-to-dot and a puzzle are included. The puzzle has been updated with the stew food and standups. Click here to download this file with these updates only. The first is a Reader Worksheet and is divided into the three sections by chapter. This can be used as one worksheet, or review, or if you are dividing the lesson, each section can be used as needed. The wording from the scripture is as easy to read as possible with sight words while keeping to the key points with easy to answer questions. The second is a fill-in-the-blank worksheet. This is sectioned by the number. Black & white only. I designed the Trip Strip to be a cut & glue timeline. This one shown has lines for the students to write about each event. Or, they can write the scriptures. There is another worksheet without the writing space. These can easily be used for mixed age groups. Cut and glue according to directions. Michel Keck This was our big FINALE project of the 'Art Room' year. It incorporated so much of the learning and techniques we had explored over this last year, with a particularly strong focus on value, texture, contrast, balance, form and variety. Our final results are absolutely stunning, especially considering these kids are between 9 and 14 years, with most being on the younger end, between 9 and 11. Michel Keck A few approaches will help students experience success, and will lead to artwork that is rich, layered, exciting and interesting. Kids aged 9-11 Kids aged 9-14 Day 1 Objectives DAY 1 and DAY 2 We looked at the work of Michel Keck, and noted her use of collage paper to reproduce the different values (lights and darks) in her dogs. To make her dogs look realistic, despite being made in collage, she often paints the eyes and nose. She also often adds a bold, whimsy contour around the edge of the dog, for contrast and emphasis. Dog Trace and Transfer: Students each chose a photo of a dog. I had printed many options for them, where the contrast of light to dark was strong. All white dogs, all black dogs, or yellow labs may not be the best option since this project, since it is about mapping out values. Dog photos were found on the internet and printed as large as possible on regular printer size paper. This will be the size students will collage on. Googling 'Dog Portrait Photography' will give you some great photo options. Using transfer paper, student transferred their dog onto their 20x30cm watercolor paper by tracing all the contour lines, eyes, nose, and the larger value 'shapes'. Collaged background in neutral papers Background: Students pasted neutral tones of collage papers all around the the space around their dog. For VARIETY, students must use different types of papers for this step. At their disposal were: book papers in various fonts and stages of yellowing, newspaper, lined paper, grid paper, butcher paper, sheet music, dictionary paper, recycled paper with hand written notes, etc. Important is that the papers are all neutral tones. Papers were torn or cut in larger pieces, to quickly and spontaneously fill up the paper. The background will be painted over later, so this stage shouldn't require too much thought or time. Its purpose is to create texture and interest in our background. * We used acrylic gel medium to paste, but mod podge would work too. The rule to gluing with gel medium is: 'glue under and glue over', much like you would with decoupage. Beginning Collage: Student chose maximum 10 types of paper which roughly represent a value of 1-10, or lightest to darkest. Limiting their papers will result is a more BALANCED and HARMONIOUS end result. Student must repeat the use of each paper for this same reason. For VARIETY and interest, students were encouraged to use a range of papers, including patterned, plain, painted, map, cools and warms, and neutrals. Tearing or cutting their papers, students begin pasting their collage papers on their dog, looking for good value matches. For example, perhaps a darker area under the chin and in the ears will be represented by a darker blue painted paper, while a lighter area in the chest and forehead will be represent by a lighter, patterned paper. A middle value might be represented by a plain pink color, etc. Important is that the value relations are roughly correct. *Tip: It's easiest to collage larger value areas first, then address the smaller value areas by layering these over top the larger areas. *Tip: Avoid straight paper edges or corners as this looks unnatural and inorganic. Tear these away. *Eyes and nose are avoided (to be painted later), but carefully collaged around. *Painted paper made the biggest different for this project. I paint my own papers, with leftover paint from our palettes after class. I paint papers in color families, or analogous schemes, to keep the colors in harmony. This way, my students can always reach for papers in the color family they need (reds, blues, greens, etc). We found that our painted paper really looked like fur, because of the brush strokes and because of the random streaks of color. It gave our dogs lots of dimension and interest. This is what our dogs looked like at the end of Day 1 and Day 2. Day 3 Objectives DAY 3 Final Dog Touches: On our third day we painted the eyes and nose. We attempted to paint these as realistically as we could, looking closely at Michel's Keck's dogs for inspiration. I encouraged the students to be inspired by the painted eyes in Keck's wok, rather than trying to paint from our photograph, because Keck's painting style is somewhat reduced, yet still realistic, and easy for the kids to recreate. Noses were painted with attention to light and shadow, and all the values in-between. Students could add a few minor black lines around the mouth area for emphasis. Using a black posca pen (in thick and in thin line), students emphasized the contours of their dogs, with some whimsy squiggles and peaks to indicate fur, just like Keck does. Background: Students painted their background in layers of paint and stamps. They could either stick with a neutral palette, using white, grey, ochre, etc., or a color palette. Our goal was to still allow hints of our collage paper to peek through here and there, and to create lots of interest and texture. Our collage papers were painted over with a thinned color. We 'lifted' paint up by scrubbing or rubbing it up with rubbing alcohol (this reveals bits of our collage papers). We created subtle texture by stamping and printing using various stamping materials (bubble wrap, wine corks, corrugated cardboard...). **Important in this step is that a similar color is used, so the texture is subtle. For example, on a red background we might stamp with an orange-red color; on a gray background we might stamp with a lighter gray. We then add more paint in sheer coats, or dabbed some more color here and there, until we get a cloudy, soft, textured, rich look. Scrumbling or stippling the paint with our brush, or smearing paint around with our fingers, works here. As long as the end result is soft and does not overwhelm the dog (our main focus), it's all good. Once we found a good balance of texture, interest and color, we stopped and were done! These results just floored me! The kids worked hard on these, but spreading the steps out over three 90 minute classes gave them plenty of time to bring it all together. I think they all loved the mixed-media and very tactile nature of this project. I special shout out to my oldest student, Marko, 14, who asked if he could do a tiger. And what a great job he did!!

This fresh from the farmyard paper plate chicken craft is not only super cute but it’s also super easy to make too!
This week, kindergarten continued their exploration of line, and started these fun line paintings! We used a new medium, to them, oil pastels and tempera cakes. 😄 Here's how we did it! Materials: Sax 90lb paper Crayola Oil Pastels Jack Richeson Semi-Moist tempera cakes First, we reviewed the different types of lines. Then, I showed them how to draw the lines from side to side of their (vertical) paper. I also talked about how you need to make the lines dark with the oil pastels, or they won't show up as well,when you paint. After that, I went over each color with the tempera cakes paint. I used rainbow colors, but told them they could use different colors if they liked. Many of them have not ever painted before, so we discussed how to hold a paint brush on the grip part of the handle, and to not get on the metal part of the brush. (As Cassie Stephens says, "the DANGER ZONE!") We go over the process of DIP, WIPE, and SWIRL, in the tempera cakes. We dip it in the water, wipe it on the rim of the cup, and swirl our brushes gently in the paint. We wanted our paint to go side to side as well, and try to stay in the lines we created. After the kids get done painting, we're going to use shapes (another element of art) to turn them into monsters! inspired by Georgetown Elementary's blog! The kids and I loved doing this project. First of all, I love combining collage with painting and drawing, and I love big bustling cities. Secondly, this project was an opportunity for my students to visually communicate where they, or their families, comes from. Always big points for personalizing art. The New York artist, Elizabeth Rosen, was the inspired for this project. See her work here. Elizabeth Rosen Objectives were: creating a layered cityscape using various collage and book papers; overlapping buildings; variety in text, color and shape; balance and harmony; perspective (smaller and higher in back, bigger and lower at bottom); and creating depth with charcoal sticks, which we smudged with our fingers. We added personalized symbols which represent our home city of choice. We began by painting our sky in an opaque color. We only painted half way down, because we knew that our collage papers would cover the bottom up to middle portion (saving on time and paint is always good!) We then cut out various collage papers in simplified building shapes and were mindful of varying our shapes and sizes of our building, as well as choosing papers with different fonts, coloration and design, so as to achieve a well balanced and dynamic cityscape. We arranged and then glued, starting at the back of the city and moving down, so that those in front overlap those in back. We then drew symbols, signs or other indicators of the city we were representing (a shopping mall in Dubai, the City Hall in Zagreb, building top water tanks, yellow cabs and a bagel shop in New York, a church and clocktower in Prague are a few examples the kids came up with the identify their city). We cut these out and pasted them on our buildings. Lastly, we used soft vine charcoal to run a black line along the edge of all our buildings, and then smudged lightly with our fingers. This gives immediate and stunning depth and 3-dimension to our city. Represented in the below collages are Berlin, Prague, Milano, NYC, Minneapolis, and an invented city. Kids 7-9.
