Exploring life and art through the lens of my faith. Art journaling transforms our words and thoughts into images.
Last month on my weekend with my sister we had the great idea to use old Rolodex holders and cards as art journals. You can read more about the beginnings of this project here. In searching for ideas for this project I have run across a some other artists who have made Rolodex art journals also. At Tuscan Rose she calls her project Scrapodex. Her project is from a few years back but if you click on Scrapodex in her category list she has a lot of posts about her project. Collage artist Seth Apter called his project Rolodecks. He didn't have a Rolodex so he used a small box as his holder. Kristin Peterson at Altered States Studio often uses Rolodex cards to get her creative juices flowing. My sister has created a few more cards for her project of positive quotes: One of the things I am enjoying about this project (besides the fact that it includes vintage office supplies) is that it's quick. My cards are 3 x 5. Once I built up a little stash of covered cards it was very easy to fit a little art in after a busy day and complete a full card in a short amount of time. I'm going to fill the "A" section with a card a day for Advent. 30 Day Blogging Challenge day 12.

I am indeed an English major geek of the highest order, so I was totally excited to see this week's Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge theme of "Based on a Book." Why not make a project where the book is the actual base? So here is my altered Rolodex-ish file made out of a book. As a person who was taught to never ever fold the pages of books, this was a morally-challenging challenge! I started with a big book (1200+ pages) of American poetry (forgive me Whitman!!) I seriously felt pain and guilt with each fold, but then I thought, what better book to have at my fingertips, even if it took on a new shape? Surround me with literary greats in one form or another and I feel inspired. This is the first time I've made this type of structure, so I'm by no means an expert at doling out advice, but here's what I did. I started in the middle of the book and took a section of 5-6 pages. I looped the section in half toward the spine. (Disclaimer! I forgot to take process pics early-on, so the next couple of pictures are of a totally different book just to show my process). I tucked the section into the spine as tightly as I could. Then I folded the section flat and repeated that process about fifty thousand times (it actually wasn't that bad!). I alternated so that I'd fold a few sections to the left of the center section I started with, then I would fold a few sections to the right of the center section. Working on it from both sides kept things more even. Here it is (picture flipped vertically) when it was done: Once I had my structure in place, I took patterned paper and started making files/dividers using rectangular dies and the We R Memory Keepers Tab Punch Board and a great little die from Penny Black called Tabs and Toggles. Once I had my files made, I started putting everything into the book. The pages held things nicely! If you wanted thinner book sections, you could certainly fold fewer pages at a time, but I liked the look of the chunkier sections. I scribbled down some ideas and techniques on some of the file cards and then I started putting in some of my finished cards and tags. I'm always running out of wall space to display things I've made, so I thought this was a great alternate location. So it contains tricks and tips and some of my former projects. I thought it could be an "inspiration station" of sorts. At the end of the day, this held A LOT of goodies and it's nice to have all of these notes and projects in one centralized location. And hopefully this project doesn't get me black-balled within the librarian community! This book does look pretty happy in my craft room, though, right? So I'm hoping that means all will be forgiven! Maybe I should've called this the "everything but the kitchen sink" project because I used a lot of paper from different collections. My Rolodex Project I thought it would be fun to have a Rolodex -- or two -- filled with art cards and I've been busy making cards. I invited my friends to join in too and getting the cards back in the mail has been so much fun. When I thought of doing this I didn't know it was already "a thing". Silly me. But what the heck, better late to the party than never. If you are interested just google Rolodex Art Cards and you'll see what I mean. (cards here by Karenann) Karenann sent me a whole bunch of cards she made a while ago -- lucky me! She said she was cleaning out her stuff and getting rid of things. Oh! The horror! Imagine these beauties being lost. They have a very good home now. Card by Monica the Artful ReCrafter -- tiny little die cut envelopes with stamps inside. I bet you can guess who made these -- Mim4Art! Very cool. Keep those cards coming in folks! Things are starting to look pretty good here. I have this flat Rolodex and a round one....I replaced the beat up blue ABC cards with these nice plastic ones -- thanks to Scrap. If I fill up the flat file I am moving on to the round one... Top two cards from Tofu and bottom from Christie.... Here's one I made.... Dori Singh Mail Dori sewed two of the cards together and made a little pocket.....I am crazy about this one... D is for Dori And, here's the back...... I am eagerly waiting for more cards to roll in (Rolodex....get it?). My art pal Kelly P made cards as soon as she got my request and they are lost somewhere in the mail......bad USPS. I know a certain someone in Australia is working on a couple and the rest of you know who you are...... If any of you out there in cyberspace want to join in the fun, let me know in the comments. I would certainly love more cards and you'd be in very good company. I have more to share about the Rolodex art cards so stayed tuned for more posts about them mixed in with other posts. How many of you have already done this? And how many are GOING to now you've seen how cool these cards are? You notice I'm back....I couldn't stay away too long...I miss you guys.... SEND GOOD MAIL -- GET GOOD MAIL!

Altering Rolodex cards was quite a craze for awhile, but seems to have slipped onto the back burner of the art communities I frequent. Over the weekend, I pulled out my blank cards and my envelopes of appropriately-tiny words and images, and created a few new additions to my Rolodex file. As I've probably mentioned before, I love collage and I love quick results, so these petite pieces of art are just my style. Truth be told, they are a great tool for procrastination: Need to get ready for some fall craft shows? ....Right after I finish this little collage here. Need to figure out those 1001 policies to get my Etsy shop underway? ....Sure, just let me glue a little something over here. Need to create some appropriate packaging to present my wares to a local gift shop? ...No problem...just let me finish one more Rolodex card and I'll get right on it! I get to feel like I'm doing something artful and productive, but I'm not actually doing the tasks that are calling out for my creative energies. And just like the bulging pages of a finished art journal, there is something quite satisfying about a Rolodex file growing thick with collaged cards, especially when so many of them have come from swapping with artful friends in Blogland! If you are interested in any individual swaps with me, be sure to check out the "Swaps" tab at the top of my blog! ******************************************** As a surprise "thank you" to my readers, I am sending out some autumnal goodies to the "early responders" to my previous post on Matchbook Notebooks. If you left a comment on that post before the publication of this current post (that's seven of you lovely ladies!), be on the lookout for something fun in your mailbox!
Hi Everyone! I'm excited to bring you some brand new files that are in the Lori Whitlock SVG shop and coming to the Silhouette Store! Memorydex scrapbooking is making a comeback! They are perfect for documenting weekly favorite photos, December daily, recipes, events... whatever! I decided to use this Memorydex box for my weekly photos. My goal is to do a card a week in 2020 documenting my favorite picture of that week. Take a peek... I started with the new Memorydex Box and Cards file (SVG, Silhouette). I decorated the base box using some Doodlebug Design Love Notes collection and Abigail Alphas. I then created cards for my first two weeks of 2020. For week one, I used one of the new Memorydex Foldover Cards (SVG, Silhouette) I love how you can decorate the front of the card, and add extra photos on the inside! It's great for when you can't pick just one photo to document! The base of my cards are Doodlebug Design Petite Prints. I used some Sweet Summer Stickers to document our recent trip to the Keys. For week 2 I used one of the new Memorydex Scalloped Cards (SVG, Silhouette) I made a set of all the new cards that coordinate with the Memorydex Box, so that it's easier for me to keep up with documenting my year! Memorydex Foldover Cards (SVG, Silhouette) Memorydex Scalloped Cards (SVG, Silhouette) Memorydex Envelopes (SVG,Silhouette) I put together a quick tutorial showing how to assemble to box, you can find it over on the Lori Whitlock Blog. If you make a Memorydex box using this file, we would love to see your projects! Be sure to tag Lori Whitlock on Facebook and Instagram so we can see! That's it for me today, thanks for stopping by to peek!
My friend Christine Shebroe is hosting a Rolodex Card Swap and here are a few that I made to trade with the other artists in the group. .....
