Woodstock is coming up on its 50th anniversary, and while it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since half a million people grooved in upstate New York, a golden anniversary is a great reason to look back at some nostalgic photos. Here are some rare and funny pics of Jimi Hendrix while performing with his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Open Air Love & Peace Festival in Fehmarn, Germany on September 6, 1970. Hendrix and MK II line up of the Experience (with Billy Cox on Bass and Mitch Mitchell on Drums) were originally scheduled to play on 5 September, but heavy rain and gale-force winds interference delayed their appearance to the next day. Hendrix could have gone home on the 5th but he decided to play a day later at noon, and duly got booed for his troubles by the festival crowd at the start of his show. Jimi told a reporter at the festival site on the first day: "I’ll play tomorrow. Tomorrow at noon. I don’t have to, but I want to. The fans are out there in the dirt, I have to play for them. They came because of me. [Otherwise] I would have a bad conscience...”
Woodstock was supposed to be '3 days of peace and music' - but as these stories from right after the concert describe, it didn't exactly end up that way.
