ROBERT TAVENER (1920 - 2004). Sheet size c.10x8ins.. Unmounted. Published by Bread & Butter Press in a limited edition of only 150 and reproducing a project ('Vignettes of Sussex') which the artist was working on towards the end of his life. Known principally for his sumptuous and large scale limited edition lithographs and linocuts, beyond the pockets of most of us, this hand-coloured illustration is a rare gem. Robert Tavener, illustrator and printmaker, was born in London. After 6 years war service he attended Hornsey College of Art (1946-1950). He was head of Printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design from 1953, later to become vice principal until he retired in 1980. He also taught at St Martins School of Art for one day a week. He did much illustration work as well as commissions for organisations such as Shell, the BBC, and London Transport. In 1958 he was invited to illustrate the diary for the Kynoch Press, following in the footsteps of the highly influential artist, Eric Ravilious, also from Eastbourne. His work was accepted for 34 years in succession at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He was a senior fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers where he exhibited in 30 shows. His work is held in more than 25 public collections in the UK alone, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Government Art Collection. (Info. from Emma Mason Gallery.) Vintage Homes and Gardens Magazine from August 1962. Number 2 Volume 44. Front cover is delightful and by Robert Tavener. This is a charming publication and a fantastic insight into home interiors and gardens of the 1960s era. Perfect for someone special who is embarking on an interior or garden design career or for the individual who loves fashion. Condition is fair, this magazine has been used.
