Making bows can be a fiddly business. We loop, and tie, and pull on skinny little pieces of ribbon and hope when we’re done that we end up with something kind of straight and pretty looking. It can leave even crafty folk feeling rather fumble fingered. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a little...
Last holiday season I posted a tutorial on how to make glitter ornaments. The questions about that tutorial keep on coming - and it's now about the ornaments so much as the bow on top! So today we're talking all about how to make the perfect (double) bow. Silhouette School weekly contributors Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze are here to share their expertise in the bow making department! What's an ornament without a cute little bow for flair? Today, we'll show you how to make an easy double bow in less than a minute with nothing but your fingers and some ribbon. It's not exactly a Silhouette tutorial, but it is definitely need-to-know for crafters! First, you need some thin ribbon, preferably double-sided. I specifically chose not to use double-sided ribbon, just in case you were wondering what the big deal is. Measure out about 32 inches, give or take a little. You can always trim the excess. Now grab your ribbon and follow along! Pinch the ribbon about one-fourth of the way down and drape it over you fingers. Take the longer piece of ribbon and loop it back around your two fingers. Pay close attention to the photos and how the ribbon is looped around each finger. On the second time down, you'll come back to the front of your fingers instead underneath. Loop back up around the tip of your finger and loop to the left. Now tuck the end of your loose piece of ribbon through your two fingers, where they come together at your hand. Pull the loose ribbon end around the back and tuck it under where the ribbon crosses (kind of like tying your shoes). At this point, you can cinch it up and pull the loops together to make the bow. Now just slide it off your fingers and fluff your loops until you're satisfied. If it doesn't come out the first time, don't despair, you can actually untie this and try again with the same piece of ribbon! Can you see the difference with not using the double-sided ribbon? It's not a huge difference, it's more personal preference, but double-sided ribbon is recommended for consistency in the design. Now on to more crafting, you have to make ornaments to put all these bows on! Note: This post may contain affiliate links. The main inspiration for what follows is a video tutorial by Becca Feeken of Amazing Paper Grace where she explains how to tie peg bows. I like to have my ribbon tails both exiting the bow from behind & showing the right side (as Becca does), moreover with a patterned ribbon having an up or down motif (as in my example where the flower stems grow up out of the ground) I don't want any part of the bow looking as if it is upside down. Not always having pegs to hand I thought I would see if it was possible to do something similar using my fingers & the following is what resulted. 1) Using a piece of ribbon about 12 inches long 2) & placing the bottom edge of patterning to the left, loop the ribbon around the first two fingers as shown. 3) Taking the left tail place it over the right ribbon & flip over between the first two fingers. 4) Turn the hand over & ensure the right side of the ribbon you have just flipped over is facing you & the bottom edge of the pattern is to the left. 5) Insert the tail down through the gap between the two fingers as shown. 6) Turn the hand back so the palm faces you & the ribbon just inserted through the gap has the wrong side facing you. 7) Pull the top tail straight down so the wrong side faces you & the tail is towards the right of the first tail as shown. 8) Taking the left tail fold it up & over the second tail as shown. 9) Insert the tail through the loop formed by the second tail as shown. 10) Pull the first tail upwards & the second tail downwards ensuring both the tails have their wrong sides facing you. 11) Pull tight 12) Turn the hand over & neaten the centre fold if necessary. 13) Turning the hand back so that the palm faces you the knot should look like this with an inverted U or horseshoe shape visible. 14) The tails can be pulled downwards...... 15) ....... or sideways 16) ......& the ends snipped as desired. Here you can see that both bows have the flowers growing upwards out of the ground whether looking at the bows themselves or the tails.
Hi everyone!! I've had a few requests to show how I made the bow on the front of the Brie Box for this week's Tool Time Tuesday. If you missed upcycled Brie cheese box, you can click here. Here's the bow from the box...quick and easy!! Here is the second bow I will be demonstrating... For the first bow, you will need a length of ribbon for your desired size bow and a smaller strip (about half the width of your main ribbon) for the center. If you do not have a smaller width ribbon to match your main ribbon, you can cut a piece length wise. However, you will need to put Fray Check on the cut edge so it won't unravel. Place ribbon horizontal on flat surface. Take the left side of the ribbon end and fold over just past the half way mark. Glue with a dab of hot glue, fabric glue or tack with thread. Now fold over the right side just over the middle and secure with a dot of hot glue. Turn the ribbon over. Place your narrow center ribbon over the middle. Turn over and glue down both raw edges. All done!! Poof up the loops on both end or you can leave them flat for a more tailored look. I hot glued it to the front of the box. Bow #2... This is always my "Go To" way to make a bow. Take a length of ribbon... Cross over the 2 tails, making sure both ends are rights sides up if your ribbon has a wrong side and a right side. Now take the top section and bring it down behind the center crossed area. Bringing this center section down will form the 2 loops of the bow. This is the point where you will need to adjust the length of your tails and the size of your bow loops that you want. Once you make a lot of bows, you will be able to "eye" the size of things. Now pinch and gather the top part you just brought down and the crossed areas of the center. To secure the bow, you can use a thin matching ribbon, sturdy string or floral wire. For wreaths I use wire. For gift packages, gift bags or decorative accents, I use thin ribbon. Tie the ribbon tightly around the center cinching up all the ribbon. Don't forget to trim the tail edges...either "V" shaped notch, slanted on the diagonal or straight across with pinking sheers. Quick and easy bow without having to tie it like your tying your shoes, because those bows never turn out even for me. Now you can add your cute bow to anything... Have fun making your own bows!! ~Karen~

How absolutely gorgeous are those double bows? We think they are so stunning and guess what else? They are SO easy to create. Really! Wrap the ribbon around your fingers a couple of times and you have something beautiful for all of your projects. Let us show you how! You can use all kinds of ribbon for this — we’re sharing with you three different types. You’ll hold the ribbon over the fingers on your opposite hand (your left hand if you’re right handed, your right if you are left handed). Wrap the ribbon or twine behind the index finger and in front of the middle finger. (Tip: The width apart your fingers are will be the size of the loops in your bow.) You’ll wrap the ribbon around twice in a figure 8 fashion. Now, lets tie it up! You’ll take the end of your ribbon and put it over the figure 8 and thread it through the V your index and middle finger creates. Pull that end all the way underneath – we’re going to use it again! Now, to tie the bow tight! Let’s slide the end of the ribbon underneath the wrapped area on the top. Pull that end tight – this is how we create the bow. Once it’s tight you can slide the bow right off of your finger tips. Now is when you will work with the ribbon to shape it up, then trim the ends to your desired length. Now, don’t forget! You can use all types of ribbons, twine and thread to create this type of bow. Would you like us to walk you through each step of creating these beauties?
