ROM and I go way back so I'll be referring to him by first name only and not by his full title: ROM, the Space Knight. When I started to pile together subjects for these Toys of Christmas posts, I never intended to focus on such a small time frame (very late 70s/early 80s) or electronic toys only. I took a leisurely stroll down memory lane and captured the most memorable things. It just so happens they all fall in that magic time of the Dawn of Electronic Toys. ROM was game company Parker Brothers first and only foray into the realm of action figures, electronic or otherwise. This is somewhat ironic as PB is now owned by Hasbro (formerly Kenner) who have been on the defining edge of action figures for decades. PB smartly sold the character rights to Marvel Comics and as ROM quickly faded into toy nostalgia-ville, the comic went on for a seven year run. The toy was my first introduction to ROM. I wouldn't see him in comic form until a few years later when he got mixed up in Secret Wars 2. The beauty of this is that without being based on pre-existing media, ROM was totally new to me. There were no preconceived notions in my little head about how I could play with him or for that matter, what he was exactly. Was he a robot or a guy in space armor? What exactly did it mean that his Neutralizer could banish creatures into the Shadow Zone? While not very articulated, ROM had LED lights, multiple sounds and three different accessories you could plug into him. Don't know why they decided to give him glowing red eyes and a creepy breathing sound, though. I imagine at least one lad somewhere used it to scare a sibling in the dark. The site ROM Spaceknight Revisited has digitized all his sounds and is also a great resource for all things ROM (2021 update - the site no longer exists). How sweet would ROM's translator be as a ring tone? If you want to get to know ROM a lot better, check out this 10 minute video.
I never owned a “Captain Action” doll action figure as a kid, and to the best of my recollection, I never wanted one all that much. Not that I had anything against dolls action figures …
STAR TREK Eight-Inch Action Figures & Playsets from MEGO Mego presents their 8-inch line of Star Trek action figures and playsets. These fully articulated Mego action figures are the very first time any Star Trek characters were represented as toys. The Mego line of 8" Star Trek figures featured characters made popular by the original television series of the same name. The original Star Trek television series had actually been off the air for several years and the first Star Trek movie didn't even exist yet when Mego began producing these figures. In a lot of ways, Mego merchandising can be credited with reviving the Star Trek franchise. The main difference you'll notice with the male crew of the Enterprise versus a typical Mego figure, is that their boots are sculpted directly as the lower half of the figure's legs instead of being removable boots like we've seen with nearly all other Mego figures. This format is consistent for Kirk, Bones, Spock, and Scotty. While the look of the boot itself is authentic it takes away a very important part of articulation in the ankles. This makes theses figures much less poseable than other Mego figures (although – in all fairness, the removable Mego boots restrict articulation in much the same way). Starting around 2008, Diamond Select Toys created some fantastic repros of these Star Trek action figures. In addition to recreating nearly all of the original characters (Talos and the Neptunian are the only ones that Diamond has yet to recreate), they also created some brand new ones for their line of 8-inch Star Trek action figures like Captain Pike, Kahn, and the Salt Vampire. You can view the entire line of Diamond Select 8" Retro Cloth Star Trek figures here. All the EXCITEMENT. All the REALISM. All the BIONIC™ ACTION! Any Star Kid who read comic books in the 70s (and I'm guessing that's pretty much all of us) will have these 4-color advertisements for Kenner's Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman action figures and accessories burned indelibly into their brain matter. Hell, I actually remember these ads better than the toys themselves!
Costumed superhumans, masked avengers, mad geniuses, benevolent aliens, demigods, and the like, are pretty much the biggest business in Hollywood these days. With the real world appearing a bit topsy-turvy and full of turmoil and strife, it makes sense that folks are seeking escape in fantastical tales of those whose entire existences revolve around saving
Daisy and Leigh's retro wedding themed came about because they knew they wanted anything but a traditional day. "We decided to go down the retro/ vintage theme, but I also didn't want it to be the typical ‘vintage’ wedding style that is everywhere at the moment!" Daisy wrote. "I also didn't want a traditional sit-down meal so we had afternoon tea complete with cocktails served in teapots. The wedding eventually became about all of the things we love from the 1950s to the 1990s! I wanted our wedding to be really unpretentious and for everyone to have lots of fun."
Welcome Back Heroes.. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery..and here is a great example. Action figures were always a passion of mine and I still maintain 90 percent of my collectio…

This would be the perfect gift for someone on your list (or perhaps yourself!) These Smash'em Bash'em figures are awesome, they work just like Rockem Sockem Robots with the green "gun" fitting into the back to activate punching action. I remember seeing an ad for Kenner's Duke the Super Action Dog in comics in the mid-1970s but never actually found one in the local stores. This particular ad is from The Brave and the Bold #116 (December-January 1974/75): I recently found him on eBay (he may still be on sale) but his harness looks nothing like the ad:
Here are some snaps of a superhero themed display case I installed at my library for the month of May. Each year in May the comics industry sponsors Free Comic Book Day, a promotion run through comic shops that offers free comics to visitors. Public libraries have also begun participating in this event, and many run related events like superhero parties and comic drawing classes. We had a really fun superhero party, and the display case served as additional advertising for the event. I filled the case with vintage Mego action figures, board games, Halloween costumes, and more. See what you can spot! Vintage Batman and Batgirl costumes, a super-cool Bat-hat, and the Mego Batmobile. A fantastic Fly Man costume. A vintage Batman and Robin board game with spectacular graphics. An old Captain Atom comic and a Mego Hulk. Have a Super Day, everyone!
This figure just seemed like an obvious custom to make. This has been on my back burner for sooo long, but still, I have never seen one done. A couple of years ago, I bought another loose R.A. Flash, and wanted to make Prof. Zoom. I started by painting the head, boots, and hands with Dupli-Color Yellow Vinyl Paint, and the
