The Resurrectionist is a wild ride into a territory where nothing is as it appears. Part classic noir thriller, part fabulist fable, it is the story of Sweeney and his comatose son, Danny. Hoping for a miracle, Sweeney has brought Danny to the fortresslike Peck Clinic, whose doctors claim to have "resurrected" patients who were similarly lost in the void. but the real cure for his son's condition may lie in Limbo, a comic book world beloved by Danny before he slipped into a coma. O'Connell has crafted a spellbinding novel about stories and what they can do for and to those who create them and those who consume them. About the nature of consciousness and the power of the unknown. And, ultimately, about forgiveness and the depth of our need to extend it and receive it.
A young doctor wrestles with the legacy of a slave “resurrectionist” owned by his South Carolina medical school. "Dog days and the fresh bodies are arriving once again." So begins the fall term at South Carolina Medical College, where Dr. Jacob Thacker is on probation for Xanax abuse. His interim career—working public relations for the dean—takes an unnerving detour into the past when the bones of African American slaves, over a century old, are unearthed on campus. Out of the college’s dark past, these bones threaten to rise and condemn the present. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Dr. Frederick Augustus Johnston, one of the school’s founders, had purchased a slave for his unusual knife skills. This slave, Nemo ("no man") would become an unacknowledged member of the surgical faculty by day—and by night, a "resurrectionist," responsible for procuring bodies for medical study. An unforgettable character, by turns apparently insouciant, tormented, and brilliant, and seen by some as almost supernatural, Nemo will seize his self-respect in ways no reader can anticipate. With exceptional storytelling pacing and skill, Matthew Guinn weaves together past and present to relate a Southern Gothic tale of shocking crimes and exquisite revenge, a riveting and satisfying moral parable of the South.

This fascinating botanical lithograph of beautiful mushrooms and spores is from 1998, reproducing the very early engravings taken from nature by Ernst Haeckel himself; originally printed in the Victorian Era in Leipzig, Germany. The mushrooms in the Basidiomycete family have spores that are attached to basidia, which are specialized cells on the spore-bearing surface (for example, the gills). When the spores mature they are flung from the basidia (by means of a nifty trick involving a tiny water droplet and gravity), catching the slightest air currents and, unlike the proverbial acorn, often falling far from the "tree." The German word "Schammpilze" or "Schamm Pilze" literally translates as "Swimming Mushroom." Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel 1834 –1919 was an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor, and artist who discovered, described, and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, stem cell, and the kingdom Protista. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin's work in Germany and developed the controversial recapitulation theory ("ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny") claiming that an individual organism's biological development, or ontogeny, parallels and summarizes its species' evolutionary development, or phylogeny. The published artwork of Haeckel; 'Kunstformen der Natur' includes over 100 detailed, multi-color illustrations of animals and sea creatures. Ernst truly was an international superstar in his day! 'Mushroom Spores' is printed on both sides on heavy quality satin finish card-paper stock. It measures a generous 9.25" x 12.25" overall with one-inch snowy white borders all around. It's in excellent condition; no tears, folds, creases, or marks... a fabulous print perfect for framing. There's another equally fascinating illustration of aquatic plants printed in mossy green and white on the reverse side. You may have a bit of trouble deciding which of these lovely prints to frame first. I'll leave that choice up to you. Matted, framed, and displayed as a gallery grouping, these wonderful natural history prints are simply spectacular. (Please note that the framed examples in the last photo are just to show how this might look when it's framed. Your print will come unframed.)
