Thanks for your interest in my “Active Video Resources” series! How many times have you wished you had something substantial to support a video clip you used in class? Perhaps you wished for a resource at your fingertips which would engage students before, during and after the video clip. If you have, this series is perfect for you! This Active Video Resource is on Cave Art. You will need to have access to You Tube in your classroom to use this resource since the video clips are not included. It utilizes a clip that is 2:56 in length. I have also previewed all video clips and would not use anything that I would find inappropriate to show in my own classroom (which can sometimes be a worry with video clips)! The pages included are: Start Here: Thinking About Cave Art View & Learn: Facts From the Video Clip Your Turn: Create Cave Art Yourself (Two Options) You may choose to use just one of the activities or all of them depending upon the time available. The “pre-video” activity (or START HERE) will get kids thinking about what they will view. The “during video” activity (or VIEW & LEARN) keeps them paying attention and listening during the clip. I usually like to show the video in its entirety first and then play it again a second time for them to complete this. The “after video” activity (or YOUR TURN) allows students to reflect, apply, analyze or extend what they have learned. These activities are great as whole class lessons with opportunities to share and discuss. However, they also make perfect independent work or sub plans! Just upload the video link on Google Classroom for students to watch the video on their own and complete the activities at their own pace. They are also perfect for interactive notebooks! Just cut along the border and glue in (or reduce the copy size to 85% for smaller composition notebooks). I hope you and your students will enjoy using this resource! Look for more resources added to the Active Video Resources series regularly.
One of the things I'm enjoying most about being back at work, is taking a class of older children for art, every Tuesday. Inspired by this wonderful non-fiction narrative by Satoshi Kitamura, the children created wonderful interpretations of prehistoric cave paintings; their artwork looks so authentic and the children (especially the boys) loved it! You can read more about the author here; as you can see from the pictures this book has lots of interesting facts interwoven into the story. It's about a modern day boy who travels back in time when he falls down a hole, to find himself...

A report from MIT details the theory that cave art led to language development. The authors think that art made in acoustically enhanced caves influenced it.
The term sequential art was coined first by the comic artist Will Eisner. He analyzed this form of art through different elements of art such as design, layout, drawing, caricature and writing. But the existence of sequential art has been discovered way before it was coined by the modern era. Prehistoric Cave and Wall Paintings Considered an ancient form of art, sequential art is known to exist and practiced through cave paintings, depicting the then existing tribesmen’s way of life. Egyptian wall art and paintings is also a landmark for exercising sequential art style.

I am studying graphic design and was wanting to find something that related to my area of study. I was recently told about an Australian Indigenous Strategy and Design Company based in Sydney named Balarinji Designs Studio that is part of the Jumbana Group. It produces designs for a wide range of mediums and has been involved in commissioning and creating designs for Qantas jumbo jets and other commercial material. They were established in 1983 by John Moriarty and Ros Moriarty, and it says on their website that they deliver 'groundbreaking commercial and non-profit outcomes in relation to Aboriginal Australia'. The jet design was inspired by the dramatic colors of sunset at Uluru and represents one of the many dreamtime stories. I like the bold use of colour and strong line work; as well as how the design blends ancient patterns and symbols with modern technology. It is interesting that both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists transferred the design from computer to the airplane's exterior. The studio was also commissioned by The International Cricket Council (ICC) to create the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 logo (shown above). The design combines both Australian and New Zealand cultural motifs so as to reflect the two indigenous countries' cultural identities. I think this is an attractive and dynamic logo which captures the cultural influences of the two countries in a harmonious way and also has a feeling of celebration with the bright colours used.
