Niche-specific content is usually not readily available through regular generic search engines. One example is the academic and scholarly content. While running a search query about an academic topic through a generic search engine such as Google would probably render fairly decent results, it, however, usually takes digging into so much fluff before finally landing on relevant results. This is where having access to topic-specific search engines comes in handy. Such search engines do not only provide specific content tailored to the topic under study but their content is more likely to be reliable and authoritative. To this end, we have compiled this list of excellent academic search engines that teachers, student researchers and academics can use to quickly locate and access scholarly works and publications. We have only included what we believe are the most relevant and popular titles out there. If you have other suggestions to add to the list please share with us on our Facebook page. Enjoy

LTRP Note: Recently, we received the following letter from a concerned reader. At the time, we had nothing on our research site about Mind Yeti, but now Lois Putnam has written a great research piece on Mind Yeti (see below the letter to the editor). Dear Lighthouse Trails: I read your blog article dated 11/15/17 ... [Read more...]
These 30 free genealogy sites can help you search if you have European roots. Do you know where your ancestry is from? I know that my parents are from Puerto Rico, but I also know that the buck doesn't stop there. We have all probably seen and heard about shows or videos where random people are tested to see where their ancestors are from. They are always surprised at what they find. Wouldn't it be cool to be surprised just the same?

These pages can be used as interactive notebook pages or simply as stand-alone, ready to use student activity pages to make research of a country or city a bit more fun! My “Less Mess” Interactive Notebook Activities allow for two simple steps: cut around the border and glue it in. That’s it! They are perfect for teachers who may have their students for just one short period per day. However, if you are a big fan of the “folds and flaps” that usually come with interactive notebooks, this resource can be a nice supplement to add to what you already have or to use on days when you may have less time. The pages are designed so that they will work in spiral notebooks, composition books, three hole binders, or as individual activity pages if you are not yet fully ready to commit to interactive notebooks in your classroom. ★ PLEASE NOTE that this resource is included in my "Less Mess" Map Skills and Geography Interactive Notebook Activities and my "Less Mess" Social Studies, Map Skills & Geography Interactive Notebook Activities Bundle as well. Give your students an opportunity to “explore” cities or countries that fascinate them. These activities could be done in two different ways. You could have the students write about the city or country first on the Dream Travel page (to see what they already know) and then do some research to complete the country (or city) page. Two versions of the writing page are included with different line spacing to better meet your students’ needs. Alternately, you could have them do a little research first on the country or city page and then write about their dream travels (incorporating what they learned from their research). If you’d like them to get create with their research, have them write fictional narratives (My Trip page) about their travels using details learned in their research The research page makes a colorful page to include on a bulletin board display when completed. ★ You may also want to check out my full line of "Less Mess" Interactive Notebook Activities!

This nifty sheet is a useful companion to your research journey. I use it to help me keep track of what records I’ve found for one particular person and what to look for next. You can print it out and fill out by hand, or fill it out with Adobe Acrobat. How I use it: I first fill out what I know, sometimes that’s just a name or a partial name. There’s space for parents, spouses, and children on the first page and the second page is an expanded form for biological or adoptive parents, six additional spouses, and fifteen additional children. I like to print it double-sided to keep everything in one spot, but it can be a two-page print-out as well. Under Other Censuses there’s room to write in state or country-specific censuses that may apply to your person, such as the 1851 England Census or 1865 New York State Census. There is also room to write in your own documents that you have found or are looking for. The bottom margin has space to add in any notes for yourself, as well. Note: This printable is a digital download only. It is formatted to be U.S. Letter-Sized.
