This mini-research project is designed to be fun and meaningful! Students will research a person, place, animal, or event and display their research in a picture frame. The picture frame will include a picture (either sketched or printed) of their topic. Then, students’ research will slide into the picture frame’s pocket. There are research project templates, research graphic organizers, and research materials for every aspect of the project included. This project is designed for 5-7 class periods. About the Mini-Research Project: During this mini-research project, students will research a person, place, animal, or event. The topics that students research can be pre-determined by you, developed as a class, or completely selected by students. As students develop their projects, they will learn about conducting research, validating sources, taking notes, and compiling their research. Guided questions are included to help students conduct targeted research. Students will compile their research and prepare it for a 3-D picture frame with a pocket. Students will write their research on a custom page that they’ll be able to slip inside the pocket of a paper picture frame that students create and customize. They’ll design their picture frame with a sketch or printed picture of their research topic. The end result is an impressive 3-dimensional picture frame of their research. Their research is tucked inside the frame to make it interactive and fun! Through reading, research, and creativity students will develop critical ELA skills! These 3-D research projects are perfect for: Displaying during Open House or Parent Information Night! Integrating with other subjects. For instance, students could research important events during the Revolutionary War to connect with their U.S. History curriculum. Practicing public speaking skills – Students can share out their research and projects with the entire class. Celebrating a community of learners. Set up Jigsaw Learning Groups where students share and swap research topics to deepen their understanding of more research topics. Developing critical skills in researching, note taking, writing, editing, revising, and sharing! This resource is designed to be incredibly VERSATILE! It’s filled with options! Students can research a person, place, animal, OR an event. There are research guides for each topic. Students can pick their own research topic OR you can provide topic ideas. Great news! There’s even 4 sets of research topics included just in case you’d like some ready-made topics. There are two options for how students compile their research. They can fill in guided templates OR they can write out their research in more of a report style. You can choose the version that works best for your entire class or you can differentiate for your students. Also, students can draw or sketch their topics on their frames OR they can simply print out a picture to glue on their frames. If you’d like, you can have students collect even more research with a set of their own research questions. Students can easily add their additional research to their projects! Oh, and with 8 different frame options, even the final projects are designed to give students options! QUICK LESSON OVERVIEW: Day 1 – Students will learn about the critical components of research reports before selecting a topic. Day 2 – Students will learn about note taking and evaluating sources. Then, they’ll conduct research with a research guide that includes targeted questions. Day 3 – Students will compile their research into a first draft of their reports. They’ll revise and edit their work before meeting with a classmate for a peer review. Day 4 – Students will write the final copy of their research and assemble the 3-D picture frame. Day 5 – Students will share their reports with a partner, small group, or the entire class. Included in this resource: Detailed Teacher Overview Ideas for Implementing this Research Project Lesson Plans for Each Step of the Project (6 total) Step-by-Step Guide for making the Final Copy Research Frame Sample Research Topics (4 sets) Student Packet Cover Sheet Guided Notes to Build Background Topic Selection and Brainstorm Page Sources & Note Taking Notes Research Guides – 4 Versions (One for researching a person, one for researching a place, one for researching an animal, and one for researching an event) Compiling Research Pages 2 Styles (One with guiding questions and one with lines) Research Tools – Research Citation Trackers (3 pages) Final Copy Writing Pages – Style 1 (4 versions for each research topic) Final Copy Writing Pages – Style 2 (lined version) Final Copy Frames (8 different styles) Answer Keys for Guided Notes You might also like... It's that time of year again! Open House season is here and we are busily working on projects to share with our parents on our big night. One of the big projects my students will be working on is their Animal Diorama and Research Report. This was something I did for the first time last year, and it was a HIT! I got this idea after my son had to make a diorama for his first grade class last year. We had so much fun creating his animal diorama as a family project, that I decided it was something I had to do with my class too! I brought the idea up to my second grade team, and they were all very excited about it... so we went for it! We decided to give the assignment the week before STAR testing. Since we wouldn't be giving homework during the two weeks of testing, that would give students more time to research, gather materials, and work on their projects. Students had about three weeks to complete their projects. We decided to have the students bring in their completed dioramas the day before Open House. We were thrilled with the results! Here are a few student samples from last year: Along with this diorama project, our students will also be completing an Animal Research Report poster with information and illustrations, as well as a writing assignment and an oral presentation. Our students will be getting both a Science and Language Arts grade for this project. I'm offering my Animal Research Report poster as a FREEBIE on TpT! Here's a sneak peek: You can grab it here. Animal Research Report Poster If you're looking for everything needed to do this Animal Diorama project with your class, take a peek at my Animal Diorama and Research Report Project Pack! It's got everything you'll need in one convenient spot! Last year, I struggled to find examples of dioramas online to show my students, so I've included detailed photo samples of my own students' projects, as well as a step-by-step presentation for your students. Here's a preview of all of the goodies included in this project pack! In addition to the Animal Research Report Poster and step by step presentation for your students (which can be projected onto your Smartboard or other type of computer projector), I've also included a student-friendly rubric with grading expectations for all aspects of this project, as well as a grading rubric for teachers to use when giving final grades for this project, student instruction sheet, writing template for research report, and a presentation outline to help guide students on what to focus on for their oral presentation. It's everything I struggled to put together last year for this project in one convenient place!

{Shameless plug for my GIVEAWAY} Sorry! But, here's a freebie for enduring it. My team and I had to teach "Sequence in Research" last week. Really? How do you do that? Remember funny co-worker {the Gone With the Wind one}, she suggested that we complete research on famous African Americans for Black History month. Then, we could use this to help them sequence their report. Brilliant! We began our research by going to several websites including Biography.com and Factmonster.com. Both were very valuable resources. Especially Factmonster. This week, we are using the information we gathered to create a three paragraph biography. The information has been great. I wanted a culminating activity that we can hang in the room {and take down the Conversation Heart stories...those pieces of candy are starting to look gross...}. So, this afternoon I created this poster so that my students can complete it while I'm gone {AGAIN} at another in-service tomorrow. The document on TpT and TN does not have a gray background. I only did that to be able to show you on here. I took a screen capture of it. Is that the best way to do this? If you are loading documents, how do you load a picture? Do you have another method? I'd love advice, so comment below everyone!

Sometimes as a teacher, it can be overwhelming to plan a research-based writing project. We know that gathering research, taking notes, and then organizing those notes in categories are skills that need to be explicitly taught to our students on top of the writing process, but how??? Well, I am soooo excited to show you THE RESEARCH NOTEBOOK! You are going to LOVE it! This little pocket notebook will teach your students how to gather research in an organized way! When I used the research notebook to teach an animal research-based writing project to my third graders, it became my favorite writing unit that I taught all year! I was astounded at the high-level writing my students produced at the end. Check out the research notebook in use in the picture below! So here's how it works! Basically, you create pockets out of paper that fit the size of an index card perfectly, and each pocket has a specific topic that students should focus on as they delve into their research. For my animal research project, I broke the research notebook into 6 different categories: Habitat, Food & Diet, Physical Features, Life Cycle, Fun Facts, and Sources. These categories seemed to give a "lens" each day for students to view their informational text through, and this focus allowed them to read with a purpose of locating specific information. I finally was able to take some time to put this research notebook as well as many other resources together in an informative writing unit for others to use. In this writing unit, there are detailed day to day lesson plans, student printables, anchor papers for you to use as the teacher, and rubrics. Here is how the unit is broken down: FIRST, you follow the lesson plans for the research portion of the project and print out those necessary materials. SECOND, you choose beforehand whether you will have your students write a multi-paragraph research paper OR a nonfiction book. You then use the corresponding lesson plans and print out those necessary materials based on your selection. THIRD, you can grade your students writing project using the rubrics provided. There are also generic rubrics included so that you can use this pack to teach research-based writing and create a paper or book on ANY TOPIC you desire in the future! This versatility is found in the research notebook and nonfiction book template as well. You can use the template to build a nonfiction book about any subject!! This is what the nonfiction book looks like when it is finished! Here is a look at all 12 pages included. To access this product at my TPT store, click on the picture below!

Animal reports are a fun way to get young students excited about doing research. Today I wanted to show how I differentiate my animal research unit for kindergarten all the way up through fourth grade
What in the world is a dodecahedron? I have to admit, these twelve-sided shapes have become one of the highlights of my curriculum! A dodecahedron is a twelve-sided, 3-D shape that displays all of the the learning we have done with our huge research project in third grade: Colorado Animals. We have done all sorts of other things in the past (see a few ideas HERE), but this has become the project that continues to make such a huge impact year after year. Not only does this display a wide variety of learning, the assembly and construction are so much fun! I have had siblings of former students so excited to make them since they have seen their older brother's or sister's hanging in their room for years. Filling Out A Dodecahedron The idea is simple, but does require some planning and a lot of cardstock! You will need twelve different pages to make your final project. We use my Animal Research Dodecahedron (found on TpT HERE), and I make a mix of lined and blank pages, along with a title page, an About the Author page, and some graphic organizers. We are pretty explicit as we go through each page. I will pass them out one at a time as we go through our research. The lined pages are reserved for nonfiction paragraphs that students write from their bullet pointed notes gathered from research. The blank pages are filled with illustrations to highlight key information or additional information not found in the paragraphs. We always begin with the title page and About the Author since those don't require much research and can ease the students into the concept of these pages. Every dodecahedron side has tabs that will need to be colored to really make the project pop. At the end, these tabs will be folded outward, glued and stapled, to create the 3-D shape for display. As the students create these pages, they cut out the circles and keep all twelve in their folders until it's time to assemble. Assembling The Dodecahedron Assembly Day is always so much fun! I have students make two piles of six pages each. They will be making "flower" shapes with these pages, so they will need to fold all of the tabs towards them before they start. They will decide on a "center" page and glue the rest of the five pages to each of the center's tabs. They will then go back and staple each tab together. The extra reinforcement will pay off, trust me! With the other stack of six circles, they will repeat the same process so that they have two "flowers" ready to go. Once they have these flowers, they can typically see how the dodecahedrons will come together. We next make "hats" or "bowls"-- up to you-- by gluing the nearby tabs together, making a half sphere with each flower. After gluing and stapling these sides, you will attach the spheres together and voila! Hole punch a tab and tie some string to it so you can hang these in your classroom. They always get rave reviews from other students, teachers, and parents! . . . I currently have several Dodecahedron Research Projects, including Animal Research, U.S. Presidents, and 50 States, in my TpT Store. I am working on adding more throughout the next few weeks, so be sure to follow my store for the latest updates. Happy researching!

It's the end of the year and amazing things are happening in kindergarten! This week we completed our animal research projects. These kiddos blew me away! I wrote a blog post all about writing animal research papers in kindergarten HERE if you would like to see how I get this started. Today I will share an update on how our research papers went this year and a little freebie at the end to get you started. I used a class set of books we received from the Kiwanis earlier in the year. They are from Scholastic and come in sets of 5. Each book has lots of pictures of different kinds of animals so students have choices regardless of the book they pick. Once students picked their book they went to do a little reading on their own. They picked an animal from the book and started writing. I encouraged them to draw a picture first to really get to know their animal before they decided what facts they were going to share. I didn't expect them to jump "write in" and start writing but they did! The class was silent as they went to work writing about their animal. Some sat around the floor to find a quiet area for their research and some build little privacy areas around themselves so they wouldn't be bothered. A little privacy with folders and her book so she can get to work! A quiet spot on the floor was all this one needed to get focused. The thing that always amazes me about these research projects is that students that rarely write a full sentence suddenly are writing pages because they are writing about something that INTERESTS them! That's what we want right? Don't get me wrong, we always have choice in our classroom when it comes to writing but this project just really inspires students to do more. I had to have this one read to me first but once she read it I got it! ANTS! This sweetie spoke very little English when she came to school and now she is writing her very own research papers on her own. What an accomplishment! "Ants is bug are red" Remember what I said about kiddos that don't write very much. They write "I like..." and are done with it on a daily basis? Well this kiddo gives me that a lot but today was totally different. Notice the phonetic spelling....no copying out of the book here! He did his research and wrote what he wanted to write about his creature. Check out those finger spaces too! Ok, now for the FREEBIE! If you would like this ALL ABOUT page just click HERE. It also includes an All About Beavers page that I use the week prior during our Reading Street Building Beavers unit. I blogged about that HERE. It's a great way to do a group research project first before sending your kiddos out on their own. Thanks for stopping by today! It's been a little while since I have blogged about ANYTHING and it feels good to share a little fun we've had in the classroom! We only have a few weeks left....I don't know exactly and I refuse to countdown. (#takedownthecountdown) I am enjoying every last second with my kiddos! Save this post for later!
