Microfiber vegan suede yoga mat description: The artist Alexander Calder “taught art how to dance” with his beautiful mobile sculptures, and this month we’re following in his giant footsteps with our East-Meets-West folded paper crane mobile. Rather than using traditional origami paper for our paper cranes, we’ll be recycling and repurposing discarded book pages to create this simple, elegant, and fun swirl of tiny cranes. In Japanese culture, the orizuru is considered the most classic origami form, and is a representation of the “Honorable Lord Crane”, whose wings carry souls up to paradise. You may have heard that folding 1000 paper cranes grants a person a single wish; you won’t make it to 1000 with this project, but you’ll be well on your way! As you work your way through my easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions, you’ll learn how transform old book pages into dynamic works of art that come alive at the slightest touch. (Kids love this!) You can create your kinetic sculpture in just a few hours! To complete this project you will need hot glue, a stapler, and scissors, but this kit includes everything else: Clearly written instructions Bamboo hoop Upcycled book pages Hanging ring Cotton cord “When everything goes right, a mobile is a piece of poetry that dances with the joys of life and surprise” — Alexander Calder, 1898–1976
Have some old books that are just sitting on the shelf? Or maybe those old books have been packed away and you are looking for some creative ways to repurpose those old books? Last week
Holly Cupala is one of our longtime author friends and blog buds, as well as a kindred spirit, so we're happy to help plug her newest book, Don't Breathe A Word, which is already getting some great buzz. Not only that, ten percent of the author proceeds go toward Hope for Sexually Exploited Girls. All of those are reasons why I was happy to do my part to help get the word out, along with numerous other amazing (far more amazing than me!) YA authors, as part of this YouTube video on how Words Have Power: I can only wish I was less dorktacular in this video, but I hope my words and everyone's still ring true. I was thrilled to be a part of it and join Justina Chen, Melissa Walker, Stephanie Kuehnert, Beth Kephart, Denise Jaden, Lish McBride, Lisa Schroeder, Cynthia Jaynes, Tara Kelly, Joelle Anthony, Stasia Ward Kehoe, Janet S. Fox, Tina Ferraro, and Janet Lee Carey in such a worthwhile endeavor. Thanks, Holly, and congrats on your latest! Need motivation, but the shoulds and the expectations keep bogging you down? Dear Sugar says, don't write "like a man." Don't write "like a woman." Write like a motherfucker. (I would say Pardon my French, but it isn't MY French. I'm just quoting. Plus Tanita sent it to me in the first place.) If that's not working for you, here are some pretty pictures. More wild, gorgeous repurposed books are in the slideshow accompanying this Sydney Morning Herald article. (Link via Jim at This Into That, whose work is mentioned in the article.)

Paper artist and illustrator Hollie Chastain clips, layers, and stitches found photographs and scraps of paper ephemera to create her mixed-media collages. The Chattanooga, Tennessee-based artist repurposes old narratives and images—in one piece, tuba players pop out of a library card pocket, and in another, two men tug on a string woven through a handwritten note—providing a new story for each regenerated work. Chastain tells Colossal she began working with the medium in 2008. More

Pin It At Christmas, I saw someone make stained glass ornament cookies. I thought they were pretty, so I decided to make some Valentine's Day cookies and turn them into pops! What I used: •Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix, follow the cut out cookie directions-Or your favorite homemade roll out sugar cookie recipe •Crushed hard candy, I used red and white lifesavers •Sucker Sticks •Tiered Heart Cookie Cutters (micheal's or walmart, under $3) Mix cookie dough according to directions, roll out and cut into heart shapes. Place them on a cookie sheet covered with foil and partially bake, (I did 5-6 minutes) take them out of the oven, allow them to cool for 1-2 minutes and then cut out the center with smaller cookie cutter. Remove the inside of the cookie with the back end of a spoon. If these hands look manly to you it's because they are, I enlisted the hubs help in order to move quicker! Place a sucker stick UNDER the cookie and add crushed candy to the center of the cookie. Put back into the oven for 3-4 minutes or until the cookies are done and the candy is melted. Let them cool until the candy is hard, and peel off the foil. Eat up! We went to our sons' basketball tournament last week and had a 5 hour drive each way and a lot of hotel time throughout the week, so I knew I needed to take along a project to work on, or I'd go stir-crazy. I couldn't tote along my Silhouette or wood boards, so I looked around for something that would be easily portable, and decided a book page project made the most sense, so I decided to make a book
