Many of Stoke On Trent's derelict buildings, in particular the derelict houses, are still standing because of the ill fated 'Pathfinder' scheme of 2003. The houses here were vacant because of the ill-fated Pathfinder Scheme from 2003. The concept was to demolish 90,000 terraces of houses nationwide, with thousands more being renovated, this in turn bringing investment to places missing out in what was then a property boom. In October 2010 it was announced that Pathfinder would be scrapped, the local councils would need to pick up the pieces and demolish the now empty and derelict homes left in Pathfinder's wake. The scheme had already paid for the demolition of hundreds of the buildings. Balfour Street has had some of its houses refurbished, some of the terraces were knocked through turning two smaller houses into one larger one. The refurbished houses were given solar panels and used many of the original materials as possible to reduce energy waste and to keep the houses in the traditional style.
