Tutto questo fu Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli, passato alla storia come René Gruau.Prima illustratore di moda e poi disegnatore di cartelloni pubblicitari, Gruau ha legato il suo nome, una «G» maiuscola sormontata da una stella, alle più importanti riviste del tempo e alle firme più prestigiose dell'Haute Couture. Esordì appena quattordicenne, quando per contribuire economicamente al mantenimento suo e dell'amatissima madre - donna affascinante e inquieta che ben presto mise fine al suo matrimonio con il conte Alessandro - abbandonò il suo sogno di diventare architetto e iniziò a disegnare. Il suo ingresso nel mondo patinato della moda è a Milano, grazie a Vera Rossi Lodomez, che lo introduce nella rivista Lidel. Il giovane inizia a frequentare le grandi sartorie milanesi, disegnando i figurini scelti dalla redazione. Da Lidel a Eva, Dea, Donna, Sovrana, Fortuna, i magazine con cui collabora si moltiplicano e Renato, che abbandona il cognome del padre per assumere quello della madre come nome d'arte, parte alla volta di Parigi, dove stringe altre innumerevoli relazioni. Qui, oltre a collaborare con Le Figaro, Marie Claire, Vogue, Très Chic, conosce Christian Dior, di cui diventa intimo amico, e per il quale lavora, contribuendo a dare forma alle creazioni del New Look del re della moda. Di questo periodo le opere di grafica pubblicitaria per i profumi Miss Dior e Diorama. Un cigno adagiato sull'acqua, il cui esile collo è cinto da un collier di perle e un fiocco scuro o una mano affusolata adagiata sulla zampa di un leopardo: immagini di una soffusa eleganza, che esaltarono la sensualità del marchio. Intenso anche il suo rapporto con i più grandi protagonisti del tempo, sia che fossero a Parigi, Roma o Milano. Da Albe Steiner a Beppe Modenese, da Maria Pezzi ai Fratelli Rossetti, che per il centenario oggi rieditano le calzature femminili e maschili ritratte dall'artista nel sacchetto da lui realizzato, fino a Laura Biagiotti, per cui sarà come un «Andy Warhol personale», capace di interpretare il secolo con un segno immediato e inconfondibile.

Un mito dell'arte e della moda, made in Italy Ogni amante della moda -ma anche dell'arte e del buon gusto- che si rispetti, non può non conoscerlo. Le sue illustrazioni hanno segnato un secolo di moda, dalle collaborazioni celebri per Christian Dior, alle copertine delle riviste più patinate, René Gruau è stato un vero mito. Come forse pochi sanno proprio l'Italia ha dato i natali a questo celebre illustratore: René Gruau, all'anagrafe Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate nacque infatti a Rimini all'inizio del secolo scorso. Dopo la separazione dei suoi, prese il cognome della madre, l'aristoceatica Maria Gruau. E aristocratica è stata la sua arte, le sublimi illustrazioni che ci ha lasciato. Da Marie Claire, Femina, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, L'Officiel, Elle, alla collaborazione con Lanvin, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Balmain, Rochas, Givenchy, Elizabeth Arden e, infine, la maison Dior, che lo rese celebre, contribuendo alla fama di alcuni profumi, come Miss Dior, battezzati proprio dai delicatissimi tratti della matita di Gruau. Buongiorno amici e buon inizio settimana, oggi vorrei riproporvi un post che ho scritto circa quattro anni fa sul mio primo blog, dedicato ad uno degli illustratori di moda più famosi del '900: René Gruau. Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli (Gruau era il cognome della madre francese) nacque a Rimini nel 1909 da una famiglia aristocratica: il padre, infatti, era conte. La sua infanzia fu segnata dalla separazione dei genitori e dal conseguente trasferimento a Parigi nel 1924 con la madre. Esordì nella moda appena quattordicenne, dopo aver abbandonato il sogno di diventare architetto, realizzando i figurini scelti dai magazine per i quali collaborava. Fu prima illustratore di moda e poi disegnatore di manifesti pubblicitari legando il suo nome alle firme più prestigiose della Haute Couture come Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Balmain e Givenchy. Lavorò per Le Figaro, Marie Claire, Vogue, Très Chic, Flair e Harper's Bazaar: fu in questo periodo che conobbe Christian Dior di cui divenne intimo amico contribuendo, così, a dare forma alle creazioni del re della Moda. Per Dior disegnò anche i manifesti pubblicitari per i profumi "Diorella" e "Eau Sauvage". Importante fu la collaborazione con la stilista Laura Biagiotti. René Gruau fu tra i protagonisti della storia della Moda del novecento, disegnando le sue femmes fatales con il suo tratto raffinato e inconfondibile, ed i suoi lavori sono esposti nei Musei più prestigiosi, tra cui il Louvre di Parigi. A few years ago I was working at an ad agency one day when one of the owners came by with a book that I immediately asked him to look at. It was an oversized portfolio featuring drawings of a fashion illustrator named Rene Gruau. I'm not sure how much work I got done in the next hour because I was absolutely astounded by the artist's work. I immediately picked up the very expensive volume to be part of my library and began tracking down whatever else I could find on Gruau. I also began asking my other artists friends if they were aware of the illustrator. Most of the folks had strangely enough never heard of him...with the exception of Howard Chaykin who announced he had several books on Gruau. Made sense. Once you have become familiar with him you can't help but be amazed by the man's ability. Born in 1909 in Rimini on the shores of the Adriatic Sea, his father was Count Zavagli-Riccidelli delle Caminate. His parents separated when Rene was three, and at 14 his inheritance was embezzled by the trustee of the estate. While drawing had always been his pastime, he had planned to become an architect, but upon the advice of his friend Vera, the Italian fashion writer, he turned to fashion illustration as a way to make a living. Once he started getting work, he convinced his mother to move to Paris where they escaped the fascism of Mussolini in Italy. It was at this time that he met Christan Dior with whom he began a lifelong collaboration. His major influences was Toulouse Lautrec,Degas, the Italian poster artist Capiell, Rene Driant and Japanese prints. (A poster by Capiello above and one by Toulouse Lautrec.) In the 30's Gruau was extremely successful and continued to work exclusively in Paris. However, with the onset of the Nazi occupation, he moved to the Riviera, where his life was virtually undisturbed during the war. By 1947 he was back in Paris and was teamed with Dior, who remained his major client well into the l970's. In l948 he went to NYC to work, and eventually onto the west coast to Hollywood. However, he found the "dream factory" a bit too much of a factory for his tastes and left without ever taking on any major projects. He was as much a virtuoso working in advertising as in fashion. His process was described by biographer Francois Baudot as:" ...he would sometime repeatedly rework a drawing, being highly exacting in his judgment of each line. Each sketch generally required the presence of a posing model. Gruau drew first from life: first fanciful sketches, then grouping, and then making the lines firmer- a complex process that sometimes entailed a series of eighty sketches. A far cry from the quintessential apparent simplicity." Rene Gruau died in 2004 at the age of 95, continuing to work up until his death. While by this time the world of fashion illustration had passed on (forgive me David Downton) the illustrations of Gruau still remain alive and fresh. Next week: In the second part of this post I'll be showing some examples of the artists the Gruau influenced over his lengthy career, and of course more of the wonderful drawings of G*.
