A fun, Valentine's Day-themed religious education activity for young children. How can we be more loving?
My kids are ages 2, 4, 6, and 8. I currently homeschool everyone, and that includes our Religious Education. (Even when we do attend Religious Ed at our church, which we're not doing this year,
This is the Lent foldable we used to take notes over our discussion of Lent from the past few days. It will make a great addition to a notebooking project or could be hung up as a simple Lent decoration. Each of the four flaps unfolds to allow space to take notes, or to draw a picture for younger ones. The four topics we took notes on were "What is Lent?" "How is Lent Different?" "Important Days During Lent" and "Scripture About Lent." Some kids chose to color their notes, including purple letters for the liturgical color, green Palms for Palm Sunday which is towards the end of Lent, and a gray cross in the middle for the ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday. Here are a few of them displayed in our room: Click here for the blank printable. Copy double sided (we used lavender paper), fold short ends to the middle, and cut on the line between the sections to the fold. You could also just use the L E N T side and create your own topic/assignment for the inside. If you would like a copy of our completed notes, click here.

We are working on a "big picture" of the Sacraments in Religion at school right now. I created these notes for the kids with the four main ideas we keep coming back to: Jesus' mission, the Church, the Sacraments, and Grace...and how they are all related. Here is my version with a little color added to make it pretty. You can print out my copy of the notes by clicking here: Or you can print the blank notes to have the kids fill in by clicking here: You might also like our Sacrament Symbols notes or some of the other activities under the Sacraments tab above.

This summer, we had a Boys' retreat centering around the Armor of God. We wanted the boys to have a fun day and leave with the message that they can grow up to be strong, faithful, Catholic men who live for God in whatever they do. Big task, but we tried to do it in little ways. The food is very important, and honestly I think that this is the only reason that most of the boys could name the "weapons" of the Armor of God by the end of the day. I had this set up on our counter: Squares of green bell pepper for the Breastplate of Righteousness: Skinny carrot and celery sticks for the Sword of the Spirit: Mandarin oranges for the Shoes of Peace: Pringles for the Shields of Faith: Tostitos Scoops for Helmets of Salvation: Licorice for Belts of Truth: I honestly did not think of this ahead of time, but the first thing that most of the boys did as they sat down was something like this: Pretty cute, huh? They then memorized the parts with no prompting, because they would have conversations like this: "I'm going to dip my sword of Spirit in the ranch dressing. Does that make this Holy Spirit sauce?" "I'll trade you two shoes of peace for a belt of truth." "I don't know about you, but I need six shields of faith for protection." It was cool. We also used the book the Squire and the Scroll. I found a reproducible coloring book with a simpler version of the story to send home with the boys. We also had some guest speakers, including a video chat with my Army Lt. brother-in-law stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. He spoke about his decision to join the Army and how he feels he is serving God as a soldier. (He did such a good job! If you you can keep kids attention through a video chat, you know that it is quality!) We also had a visit from a couple local Knights of Columbus, who spoke about the symbolism of Knights of Columbus regalia, their mission, and how they are choosing to serve God as adult men. We also had some "quiet" sit down activities that the boys did in between things and at the beginning while we were waiting for everyone to arrive. Most popular was the scratch art shield: ...but they also enjoyed the Armor of God bookmarks, coloring pages, etc. We then made some giant shields using posterboard and duct tape. Cut out, designed, and they had to decorate them with symbols of faith. We added a duct tape handle: And then talked about all of the things that can attack our faith in the world- temptation, bad choices, sin, forgetting about God...etc. They had quite the specific list. Then we went outside. And I told them that these water balloons represented all of the things of the world that make it hard for us to love God like we should. We have to use our shields of faith to keep those things from attacking us. They then spread out and had at it, firing away each other and using their poster board shields as a defense. The only other highlight was that they got their foam "sword of Spirit" to take home with their shield of faith at the end of the day. Here are some links to some of the activities to go along with this retreat: Draw Your Sword Scripture Game Armor of God Folder Cover Armor of God Bookmarks "Be Soldiers!" Holy Week is a super important time to keep the true focus of the year with Christian kids! Beginning on Palm Sunday and running through Spy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, & Holy Saturday- you
This past Saturday, we celebrated the life and teachings of Venerable Fulton J. Sheen with the 2nd Annual Fulton Sheen Family Day. (You can read about last year's event here) Bonnie, The Sheen Foundation, and I did the planning, and we decided to change things up a little from last year's event (which was held in Peoria and included tours of the Sheen museum and St. Mary's Cathedral) and hosted it in El Paso, IL, the place of Sheen's birth, baptism, and early growing up years. While the numbers were small, we still had a great day with the families that came to learn and enjoy, some of my former students who were there to help teach others what they know about Sheen, and the adult volunteers who made everything run smoothly. We'll rotate back to Peoria next year, and hope to see even more families come to learn about the faith that Sheen loved so much. The Venue: We held the event at St. Mary's in El Paso, IL, the Baptismal parish of Fulton Sheen. They have a beautiful old church and a lovely new hall and a priest who loves Fulton Sheen :). Sr. Lea and Sr. Ann from the Fulton Sheen Museum helped us plan the event and did lots of behind the scenes work. They came to help, but had never been to El Paso, so we made a quick stop at the historical marker at the location of Sheen's birth. Snacks were an important part of hosting this event. My mom made these awesome Sheen-inspired-blackboard cookie cakes. Bonnie provided a delicious spread of cookies, rice krispy treats, fruit, and veggies that made everyone happy. The Door Prizes: It's always great to provide resources for people to take home with them, and it is super fun to WIN something, so we had ten door prizes that the families in attendance could win: Sophia Institute Press generously donated Angel in the Waters, Sheen's Wartime Prayer Book, and God's World and Our Place In It. Ignatius Press was gracious enough to send a copy of Sheen's Remade for Happiness. The Sheen Foundation donated A Man for All Media, The World's First Love, The Priest is Not His Own, and St. Terese, A Treasured Love Story. They also donated ten World Mission Rosaries that had been made third class relics by touching them to a vial of St. John Paul II's blood. They were packaged beautifully showing the connection between Sheen and JP2. Matt Faley, talented Catholic musician with ties to Peoria, donated copies of his awesome CD, The Only Light. We also had some fun things like DVDs, Sacred Heart and Blessed Virgin Mary framable prints, kids books, etc. The Activities: We had the movie Servant of All playing where people could watch and listen throughout the afternoon. We borrowed the life-sized Sheen cutout from the museum so that people could take their picture with him. Here is Fr. Don from St. Mary's wearing one of Sheen's vestments. The Sisters from the museum brought several artifacts and relics from the museum for people to see, and Fr. Don had pictures of Sheen on various visits back to El Paso. We had lots of copies of Fulton Sheen Quote coloring pages on tables around the room for families to color while eating snack or to take home for later. You can find these coloring pages here. World Mission Rosary: One of the craft stations was about the World Mission Rosary. You can find a whole post about this activity here, a coloring page here, and instructions/lesson plan for teaching about it by clicking on the image below: Spiritual Adoption: Another station was about Spiritual Adoption. You can read about Spiritual Adoption activities here and here, and can see the Touch of Life Fetal models in action here. Click on the image below for the instructions/lesson plan. The Woman I Love Miraculous Medals: We also made some awesome giant Miraculous Medals inspired by Catholic Icing but using this printable. A Sheen quote coloring page about Mary can be found here. You can click on the image below for the instructions/lesson. The Priest is Not His Own: The priest & altar craft is really cool because it is a priest on one side, and when you flip it over it is Jesus on the other side- perfect for helping explain In Persona Christi to kids. I didn't create this original activity- it was a download from Catechist Magazine several years ago that I have used many times over. However, while I would like share the printable with you, the activity has been removed and all of the old links are inactive. I have contacted them to ask if there is a way that I can (legally) still share it, but they have never gotten back to me- which is too bad, because this is an awesome project. We also used the coloring page you can find here. You can click below to see the instructions/lesson that went along with this station: After all of the activities, we moved over to the church for a Holy (half) Hour. Fr. Don did an amazing job praying with the kids gathered around the steps of the Sanctuary, a friend led us in song with her beautiful voice, and we had this Adoration booklet for this kids to use as a resource. (come back on Friday and I'll have the booklet available as a printable!). After the Holy Hour, the families were invited to stay for the Vigil Mass It was a great day! Make sure you go check out Bonnie's recap of the day in this post! If you are in El Paso or Peoria in the future, we highly recommend you check out the places that were important to Sheen. We are grateful to our donors Matt Faley, Sophia Institute Press, Ignatius Press, and the Sheen Foundation, as well as Fr. Don and St. Mary's Parish for hosting us. All of the adults and my students that came to help as volunteers were awesome and so appreciated.

Jesus went to His disciples at night during a storm. They didn't know who it was on the sea, but when they saw it was Jesus, Peter walked on the water to see Him! He was fine until he took his eyes off Jesus... Scripture: Matthew 14: 22-33; Mark 6:45-51; John 6:15-21 Immediately after they collected the extra food, Jesus told His Disciples get into the boat and to go to the other side of the sea. Jesus sent the people away. After Jesus sent the crowd away, He went up into the mountain by Himself to pray. When night came, He was by Himself. Jesus had found out that John had been killed. Do you remember who John was? John and John were related & the one who baptized Jesus So Jesus is upset and wanted some time to be alone and pray. The boat with the Disciples on it was in the middle of the sea. They had rowed the boat about 3 ½ miles. There was a storm, and their boat was being tossed around by the rough waves. It was about 3:00 during the night and Jesus saw them having trouble rowing the boat and so Jesus went to them. He knew they were in trouble and scared and He went to comfort them. He actually walked on the water to them. Verse 25 in Matthew states that He walked on the sea! When the Disciples saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were scared and thought He was a ghost! They cried out in terror! But Jesus instantly told them to be happy and don’t be afraid! Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Jesus told him to “Come.” When Peter got out of the boat, he walked on the water to Jesus! The Bible doesn’t say swim, Peter walked ON the water! But when Peter saw that the wind was strong he became afraid and started to sink. Peter had taken his eyes off of Jesus and let himself be distracted by the waves and the sea. He yelled to Jesus “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him and asked Peter "Why did Peter have such a small amount of faith to doubt Him?" When they returned to the boat, the wind stopped. The people in the boat came to Jesus and were amazed at what He could do. They worshipped Jesus and said, “Truly You are the Son of God.” (review Bible vs. 33) **Let the students have 2 marbles, 1 for Jesus and 1 for Peter. Have them put each marble in a bowl of water. What happens when you put the marble on the surface of the water? [it will sink] What happens when you go into the water? You either swim or you will sink. We are going to talk about two people that walked on water! I used the (rounder) riverbed stones from Dollar Tree. Original idea found here. They really liked doing this, and it was a good discussion starter! Download Jesus, Peter and the boat here. The kids love this project. As I teach the lesson, they add each piece. I gave each child a handful of Goldfish (brand) and they added to the water and had some to eat! I taped a toothpick to the backs of Jesus, Peter and the boat. Each box of blue Jell-O made 3. Also, put plastic on the top to keep the yucky white stuff from forming! You can print the worksheet here. Click here to download the lesson. Click here to download the visuals. Not all visuals are shown. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) This is the workbook, lapbook style on the left with question on the top and lift the flap to write the answer. When they come into the classroom, and we are waiting for everyone to arrive, they can glue down the picture for the days lesson, which is the right side. There are 3 lapbook printables for this Bible lesson. You can print them here: Pray Storm Peter This is the printable for today's lapbook worksheet. Students will cut out the boat, Jesus and Peter and glue onto the worksheet. You can print it here. You can find all the download links for the Life of Jesus lapbooks and the lapbook worksheets here.
