Are you interested in using rekenreks with your students, but you’re not sure how? A few years ago, I was in the same boat. Hello Everyone, Just a very quick post today, but before I share, I want to thank you for all the e-mail messages about the hurricane crises here in Texas. So many of our friends have lost their schools and homes. Please keep giving! Along that same line, please keep our Florida family and friends in your thoughts in the next few days as well! Having grown up in the West Palm Beach area, we are watching this next hurricane very carefully! Hold on! Stay safe and be smart all!!! We love you! And ...We can't forget about the wildfires! This is all just so devastating. We have to lean on each other for support, care, and encouragement. Praying for everyone affected! Having all this going on makes it hard to focus on much else, but I was able to put together a little Rekenrek unit. By now you have probably heard of this hands on tool for kids to use to see patterns in numbers, help with composing and decomposing, and so much more. I started using them with my kids last year and totally fell in love with the engagement I saw with my firsties. Kids love them! In this little unit you will be introduced to what a rekenrek is, where to get them, how to make them, how to begin using them in your classroom, and how to practice using them in math tubs. Here are a few pages from the unit. I encourage you to give them a try. I want to thank our school district for generously getting some for our primary grades!! :) If you are at all interested in Rekenreks, slide on over and CLICK HERE!! Free download! Let me know what you think. This is an introductory unit, but my plan is to add to it or create a "part 2." I hope your kids enjoy and learn as much as mine have! Take care, everyone!! Joyfully! Rekenreks build students' number sense and understanding of the relationships between numbers. They are a strong visual model that allow students to build numbers using five and ten as benchmarks.

Use these Savvy Subitizing Cards that engage kids in a wonderful subitizing activity using dot patterns, ten frames, rekenreks, finger patterns, and more.
Here is a quick list of ideas that can be used with Rekenreks in your classroom! I have a large Rekenrek and each student in my class also has an individual one. You can find the ones I use at: http://www.mathrack.com/ Be sure to add discussion and have the students talk through the activities. Another idea to use with Rekenreks is to add in the use of small white boards. I have each student lay the Rekenrek at the top of the board and as we work, the students are recording what we are doing. Hope you enjoy this product! Each EDX Education Rekenrek Counting Frame features 2 rows of 10 beads allowing early learners to count in groups of 5 or 10. It will help young minds to visualise number relationships, enhance logical reasoning skills and to develop strategies for addition and subtraction.
I’m excited to be sharing an easy project with you today–one of my favorite math tools: rekenreks! I don’t know about you, but I love to use rekenreks in my classroom. If you’ve never heard of rekenreks before, you will! These arithmetic racks consist of two strings, with a row of beads on each string. Each row is traditionally made up of five red beads and five white beads, but you can use any two colors you like. They are great for helping students to understand number concepts such as

RekenRods Ten-Frames help students connect the visualization of the rekenrek tool to the anchor number 10 within the Ten-Frame structure. Ten Frame allow kids to visualize early math concepts such as counting, addition, subtraction, number patterns, making 10, number relationships, and number correspondence. Using the Ten Frame Board, kids can easily learn addition and subtraction by adding the foam counters into the board or taking out the counters. Circle math counters help students understand the numbering system and allow students to visually see results. Ten Frame is a mathematical manipulative that helps students develop basic number sense through the composition and decomposition of number within 5, 10, 20, and beyond. The red and white two-sided foam math counters help reinforce math skills in children through hands-on learning. The boards connect to each other. It helps kids develop number concepts and learn basic facts to ten and beyond. This set includes 4 foam, interlocking Ten-Frames and 40 foam math counters. For over 55 years, hand2mind has encouraged hands-on learning and discovery, driving deeper understanding and helping children unlock their full potential. hand2mind specializes in math manipulatives designed to help students learn by doing. We supply Math Counters, Rekenreks, Abacus, Counting Cubes and more to help little ones go from counting to 10, 20 and beyond! From early math to middle school math, hand2mind has you covered with products designed to enhance learning in the classroom and the world around us. Through hands-on exploration and discovery we strive to find new ways to encourage students in math practice, literacy activities, STEM education and more!

Well, another school year is off and running, and once again, I had the best of intentions of doing better at blogging. Oh well...And so it goes. Time escapes me once again. I find myself wondering once again, what has kept me so busy? I'm not sure I will ever be able to answer that question. Anyhoo--I wanted to share my latest discovery about rekenreks. I think I shared a while ago that I had made some and they were working out just fine. However, by chance, I discovered a better way to make them. It all started when I received my materials from Frog Street Press for the make and take session I did this summer in San Antonio (which, by the way, was a complete sell out!) In making the rekenreks for my session, I discovered that they turned out even better than before, so I wanted to share that with you. When I constructed the first ones, I put the pipe cleaners directly into the foam board, which meant that the pipe cleaners were taped down on the back, and they showed. This time, I started with a cute name plate (there are so many to choose from!), and THEN I mounted them onto the foam board with hot glue. The last step was taping the edges with duct tape. I went with a name plate that would match my Rock Star themed room this time. Also, I decided to make them all exactly the same. I don't know about you, but if you have several to choose from, the kids will always want to be selective about which one they choose! So now, I don't give them a choice, because they all look just alike, and time is saved when passing them out! Another tip I wanted to share this time is putting the little happy face sticker in the top left-hand corner. Sometimes the kids want to tell you the way they made their number by starting on the right and moving toward the left. I guess this would be OK, but I really want them to proceed from left to right, just like we do when we read. So, this way, having the little smiley face helps them to remember where to start. Here are a few pictures to help give you an idea of how I constructed them this time: It is my goal in the near future to make a little video that shows you how I use my rekenreks during our "Math Talks." So, stay tuned--but don't hold your breath!
Do you have a rekenrek and you don't know how to use it? Or maybe even you have a classroom set of rekenreks and you've never really pulled them out? Or maybe you've never even seen a rekenrek and you're like “what the heck is that?”
