1938 Thomas Hart Benton American, 1889–1975 tempera and oil on board Thomas Hart Benton is renowned for his scenes of harvests and rural culture peopled by sinuous, elongated figures. This painting presents a group of hard-working, muscular field laborers who are using traditional tools to harvest grain in a gracefully undulating landscape. The intimate relationship between man and nature is articulated in the way the rise and bend of the figures echo the contours of the land. Benton is among a group of American artists known as Regionalists, who created in their paintings a heroic vision of the Midwest. Such nostalgic images of the virtues and traditions of Americans as portrayed in here offered optimism for a country troubled by the Great Depression.

Description The exhibition coincides with the renovation of the artist's historic studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, known as "5 Turner Alley," where he lived and worked from 1924 to 1935. Wood converted the loft of this turn-of-the-century carriage house into a showcase for his decorative arts work and a backdrop for some of his most famous paintings. The exhibition features works from the collection of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, studio artifacts and heirlooms that served as props, as well as significant loans from other museums and private collections that rarely travel. Together these works help to re-create Wood's studio and demonstrate the importance of craft in the development of the artist's work. The showing at the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery is the only presentation besides the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. Jane Milosch, curator at the Renwick Gallery, is the curator of the exhibition. "Grant Wood's Studio: Birthplace of 'American Gothic'" is presented under the Honorary Patronage of Congressman Jim Leach and Deba Leach. Visiting Information Renwick Gallery March 10, 2006 – July 15, 2006 Open Daily, 10:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m Free Admission
It’s Labor Day weekend and you’re about to cut into a humble red onion, maybe to slice it up for the burgers that are on the grill, or to chop it up for a sauce, or sliver it for your salad. You’re probably in a rush to get it done, but take a few seconds and consider the rather astonishing number of people who labored in order for your onion to sit there on your cutting board, whole and unblemished and ready for your knife. It truly is astonishing.
