Today our Regency time travels for fashion will take us to the year 1824 and oh what an assortment of fashions we have for this year. The trends continue with the lowering and snugger form-fitting bodice and fuller skirt bottoms as we have seen for the past few years. Then is October we see see two mourning fashions; however this time it is not due to a death in the British Royal Family but for the French King Louise XVIII. I found it interesting that the British Court was ordered to go into a short period of mourning for the French king and that many in the British higher ranks were expected to follow along. I will post the fashion article showing this mandate after posting all the fashion plates, so I hope you take a look at it as well. This is my pick of the 1824 Ackermann's Repository Fashion Plates As always, it is difficult for me to choose my pick of the fashions for any one year. I was drawn to this fashion plate due to the interesting composition. Not only is the dress and ladies face charming but the scene in itself was too unusual to be passed over. My summer project for this blog is to showcase many of the antique images from the pages of an old British publication nicknamed Ackermann's Repository. Today I'm posting the 6th installment of some amazing fashion plates from this 200 year old Regency period publication. I started with the first year 1809 and will continue to post the entire 20 years of fashion plates till we reach the last issue for December 1828. Please check previous posts for the years 1809-1813 and then upcoming post for the remainder of the series. This is my favorite 1814 Ackermann's Repository fashion plate Fashion plate 4 is the description to my favorite fashion plate shown above It's just so much fun to see how they wrote during this time period and to see how fashions were described. Here is an example of that for the two July 1814 fashion plates. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufacturers, Fashion and Politics. was a popular publications in England from 1809-1829. (The 1829 issues were printed as "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) I have found the articles and illustrations to be a fascinating glimpse into that time period. One of my favorite ongoing series in the magazine are the fashion plates. Each monthly issue usually included 2 Fashion plates, giving on average a total of 24 Fashion plates for the year. Though the magazine was published monthly; specially bound volumes were available from Ackermann's. These "bound" book versions, consisted of a 2 volume set for each year it was in publication. Ackermann's Repository "Bound" Series 1 ran from 1809 - 1815 with a total of 14 Volumes for Series 1 Series 1 Vol 1 was Jan - June 1809 Series 1 Vol 2 was July - Dec 1809 Series 1 Vol 3 was Jan - June 1810 Series 1 Vol 4 was July - Dec 1810 Series 1 Vol 5 was Jan - June 1811 Series 1 Vol 6 was July - Dec 1811 Series 1 Vol 7 was Jan - June 1812 Series 1 Vol 8 was July - Dec 1812 Series 1 Vol 9 was Jan - June 1813 Series 1 Vol 10 was July - Dec 1813 Series 1 Vol 11 was Jan - June 1814 Series 1 Vol 12 was July - Dec 1814 Series 1 Vol 13 was Jan - June 1815 Series 1 Vol 14 was July - Dec 1815 Today I will be posting the fashion plates for the year 1814. The latter part of 1814 was a time of great celebration in England due to the abdication of Napoleon and his exile to Elba. There were lavish parties all through London and fashions started to reflect the gaiety the whole of England was feeling now that the war was over... little did they know that in a few short months he would be back. Well dear hearts - 1828 was the last year for Ackermann's Repository and so this will be the last set of Regency Fashion plates from that British periodical. I'm still enthralled by all the ribbons, lace and fripperies these fashion plates have recorded as their snap-shot of what real Regency fashions were like. It's been a fun treat to share with you all the lovely dresses be they; morning, walking, promenade, evening, ball, wedding, carriage, mourning or fancy dress. I just can't imagine what it was like to change clothes multiple times a day as those who were well off did back then. I truly adore the colored plates I've been privileged to see, especially when considered that each and every one of them was hand colored - that just blows me away. There were thousands of these magazines printed every month and 30+ hand colored prints in every issue. Just think, no two of these colored plates is exactly alike. I've seen several originals available for sale on eBay and will probably buy a few to frame and display since I love them so very much. But most of all I'm thrilled to have a full 20 year set of these in digital form to play with as I create fun art in Photoshop. My pick of the 1828 Ackermann's Repository Fashion Plates I could not resist choosing this as my pick for the 1828 fashion plates since it depicts a costume that would be worn to a Fancy Dress Ball - how fun is that! (this plate shows a Sclavonian (Prussian) regional costume and would have been perfect for a Regency Fancy Dress Ball that had an ethnic theme). Masquerades and Fancy Dress Balls were an exciting change of pace for those of the Regency but the two should not be confused. A Masquerade would be one where the participants would wear a mask and would be a bit more relaxed and risque than a regular ball or a fancy dress ball. Fancy Dress balls allowed the participants to dress in fun costume but the identity of all would have been known just as if they were attending a regular ball. Some Fancy Dress Balls may have been themed and others just an open call for fancy dress of one's choosing. Either way the participants faces would not have been covered as depicted in this period poem by the Regency dance master - Thomas Wilson Fancy dress balls must as the next appear, And what they really are you now shall hear. This was due to the Death of Royal Princess Charlotte who died in October of 1828. Though married and living in Germany; she was the oldest daughter of the previous British King George III and Queen Charlotte and the sister of the current King George IV. Ackermann's Repository did not publish any notice of this but it would have been why these mourning fashions were being shown. - Just thought you'd like to know too. ********************** Ackermann's Repository printed their notice of final issue in the Dec 1828 issue so the public would know there were to be no more issues from that point forward. However a new publication call the Repository of Fashion was to replace the current Ackermann's Repository going forward according to the notice printed. I thought you might get a kick out of reading that notice as well as the attached information for professional binders to place the plates when converting the individual magazines into book volumes. I have found that in 1829 Ackermann's Repository of Fashion was published but in January of 1830 Mr Ackermann suffered a stroke and due to health issues the Repository of Fashion merged with La Belle Assemblee. Just in time for the heat of the New Zealand summer, I've made a velvet winter bonnet.
When I bought a bundle, several yards in total, of narrow silk at a recycle shop in Japan back in June, my first thought was that I could use this silk for something Regency. Now, this magenta and yellow slubby silk with a cross-hatch pattern really isn't historically accurate for the early 1800's in the western world. Among other things making the fabric rather historically inaccurate, Japan wasn't even opened for trade with the western world until 1853, 50 years after the era of the garment I wanted to make. So, yes, Japanese silk. The year 1801. Technically they don't work together. But did that stop me? No, and I don't regret it one bit! I brought home the silk with a vague idea in the back of my mind about what I wanted to make from it. I began by looking at Regency era fashion plates and extant garments online to see if I could find something close to the idea I had - and I did! (I can't seem to find a source for this beyond Pinterest, sorry!) Saved to one of my Pinterest boards I found this 1804 fashion plate. The yellow sleeveless spencer jacket thing was exactly what I had in my mind! Source A bit more Pinterest browsing brought me to the above 1801 fashion plate featuring a magenta version of a similar garment. I studied both fashion plates, paying close attention to how the "skirts" of the garments appeared to be laying in the depictions, and came up with a plan for how I would cut my garment from the narrow silk in my possession. For the bodice of the garment, I decided to adapt the drop-front gown bodice lining pattern from Patterns of Fashion 1, by Janet Arnold, which I'd used to make my Regency gown 3 years earlier. As I'd already altered these pattern pieces to fit me and used them successfully in a previous project, I decided to just skip the mock-up and go straight to cutting out the final garment. Amazingly, this worked out fine! First I cut the bodice lining from the same pink striped linen/cotton blend shirt I'd used to line my turban cap with. (The fabric from that old shirt is now completely used up!) As I wanted the front of this sleeve-less spencer jacket type thing to fasten right under my bust, I lowered the front neckline considerably. After I cut out the lining from the linen, I cut out the silk from the same pattern pieces. The bodice front pattern pieces were a bit too big to fit on my narrow silk, so I had to piece together the front pieces. No big deal - piecing together narrow fabric to cut out large pattern pieces is period accurate! I didn't use any pattern for the skirt section of the garment. I formulated a rough idea in my mind of how the skirt panels must be shaped based on how the skirts lay in the fashion plates, measured a couple things, then cut right into my silk. The back skirt is cut almost like a triangle with a half circle cut out at the waistline. The side seams are cut on the bias, at a 45 degree angle, to get those delightful "points" which I fell in love with in the fashion plates. The front skirt panels are cut as straight widths of fabric with no shaping except for the side seams, which are cut at a 45 degree angle for the points. On the finished garment I'm very pleased with how the back skirt turned out, but I do wish I'd patterned the front skirt differently and given it more shape. Oh well, it turned out well enough and I can't be bothered to change it now. I sewed together all the main pieces by machine, then took the garment with me to Uganda and finished up all the hand sewing on that trip. Before I left I pressed under 1/4" around all the edges of both the lining and the silk. While I was gone I slip stitched the edges together. Sewing away a layover on my way to Uganda. Once the bodice layers were sewn together, I attached the skirt. I'd sewn the skirt side seams prior to leaving with narrow machine-sewn french seams. I initially attached the skirt to the bodice with a whip stitch, then decided I didn't like how the skirt was laying that way. I went over the whip stitches with a running stitch, and am very pleased with the way the skirt lays after that! The skirt didn't require hemming as I'd cut the bottom edge on the selvage to save myself the bother. I did, however, have to narrowly hem the edges of the front opening. That went pretty quick. With the construction done, I moved on to the trimmings - tassels, made from silk thread, to attach to the points! I made the tassels and attached the tassels, and then, 3 nights into my trip to Uganda, the thing was done and wearable. If I'd realized how quick it would go together I would have hand sewn the entire thing on the trip rather than machine sewing the long seams before leaving! The one thing I didn't get done on my trip to Uganda was add some sort of fastening to the front overlap. I just couldn't find any buttons or anything I liked for this project! Thus, for the time being, I opted to skip the fastenings. I wore the newly finished garment safety pinned closed in the front to my sister's birthday party the day after I returned home from Uganda. It worked. Safety pins and all, I love how this thing turned out! It was just the thing to dress up my plain white regency gown! Fabric bought in Japan. Design based on French fashion plates. Sewn in Uganda. Worn in America. What is this thing actually? Is it a sleeveless spencer jacket with a skirt? A waistcoat? A short open robe? Well, according to the French description on the 1801 fashion plate, helpfully translated for me by a friend in the Saint Louis Georgian Sewing Society, the technical name is "A Tunic with Points". So there you go, this trans-continental garment is a Tunic with Points - and I love it!

Ackermann's Repository was a popular British publication of the Regency period and its monthly issues were in distribution from January 1809 till its final issue on December 1828. Fortunately for us, Ackermann's Repository was published by a printing house that specialized in producing bound volumes intended for reference and private libraries. Had this just been a fashion magazine, I believe many of the amazing plates would have vanished over time; however since this publication was a literary, economic, political, architectural,as well as a fashion publication; the pages of Ackermann's was treated as a reference item and several full collections of these bound volumes still exist today. (In 1829 Ackermann's had a fashion only publication - "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) Ackermann's was know in its day as one of the premier print shops and produced many illustrated book series and lithographs during it's time. From the beginning "The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics" as it was formally called was intended to be bound into books even though it was available as a monthly magazine as well. This is why you see the odd numbering system on the illustrated plates. At the end of each year, that years issues were available as a 2 volume set and could be purchased in a variety of binding options directly from Ackermann's or from several of the other binding houses or book sellers in London. A subscriber also had the option of having their individual issues custom bound to order. It's just so interesting how things were done 200 years ago. 1823 was the start of Series 3 When these were later bound into their 2 volume sets. Jan - Jun 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 1 July - Dec 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 2 1823 would have volumes 3&4 1824 would have volumes 5&6 and so on and so forth till the series was completed At the end of the 20 years of Ackermann's Repository there were 40 bound book volumes. According to the information I've found up to 1,000 bound volumes of Ackermann's Repository were sold per year. I've yet to find a number of how many issues of each magazine were sold per month; however it must have been a lucrative venture for it to have been published in both formats for a twenty year period of time. My pick of the 1823 Ackermann's Repository Fashions I have been posting all the lovely fashion plates from the pages of Ackermann's and continue now with Series 3 which ran from January 1823 - December 1828. These fashion would be considered late Regency and can be most easily identified by the more form fitting bodices, dropping waistlines and fuller skirt bottoms. Here at the bottom of the November fashions article we see an subtle advertisement for the new release of Ackermann's annual "The Forget Me Not". "The Forget Me Not" was another well known publication by Ackermann's. This "Literary Annual" was published around November of every year (just in time for the Christmas gift giving season) from 1822-1847 and targeted mainly the female marked. This new style of "annual" contained 12 engravings to represent each of the months and stories or poems to accompany each. It also contained a review of the previous year, the recent census, a family tree of the monarchy of Britain and a list of sovereign families and ambassadors for other kingdoms. This would have been a very safe gift for a gentleman to present a lady and in some years it sold up to 20,000 copies. Ackermann's Repository was a popular British publication of the Regency period and its monthly issues were in distribution from January 1809 till its final issue on December 1828. Fortunately for us, Ackermann's Repository was published by a printing house that specialized in producing bound volumes intended for reference and private libraries. Had this just been a fashion magazine, I believe many of the amazing plates would have vanished over time; however since this publication was a literary, economic, political, architectural,as well as a fashion publication; the pages of Ackermann's was treated as a reference item and several full collections of these bound volumes still exist today. (In 1829 Ackermann's had a fashion only publication - "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) Ackermann's was know in its day as one of the premier print shops and produced many illustrated book series and lithographs during it's time. From the beginning "The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics" as it was formally called was intended to be bound into books even though it was available as a monthly magazine as well. This is why you see the odd numbering system on the illustrated plates. At the end of each year, that years issues were available as a 2 volume set and could be purchased in a variety of binding options directly from Ackermann's or from several of the other binding houses or book sellers in London. A subscriber also had the option of having their individual issues custom bound to order. It's just so interesting how things were done 200 years ago. 1823 was the start of Series 3 When these were later bound into their 2 volume sets. Jan - Jun 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 1 July - Dec 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 2 1823 would have volumes 3&4 1824 would have volumes 5&6 and so on and so forth till the series was completed At the end of the 20 years of Ackermann's Repository there were 40 bound book volumes. According to the information I've found up to 1,000 bound volumes of Ackermann's Repository were sold per year. I've yet to find a number of how many issues of each magazine were sold per month; however it must have been a lucrative venture for it to have been published in both formats for a twenty year period of time. My pick of the 1823 Ackermann's Repository Fashions I have been posting all the lovely fashion plates from the pages of Ackermann's and continue now with Series 3 which ran from January 1823 - December 1828. These fashion would be considered late Regency and can be most easily identified by the more form fitting bodices, dropping waistlines and fuller skirt bottoms. Today our Regency time travels for fashion will take us to the year 1824 and oh what an assortment of fashions we have for this year. The trends continue with the lowering and snugger form-fitting bodice and fuller skirt bottoms as we have seen for the past few years. Then is October we see see two mourning fashions; however this time it is not due to a death in the British Royal Family but for the French King Louise XVIII. I found it interesting that the British Court was ordered to go into a short period of mourning for the French king and that many in the British higher ranks were expected to follow along. I will post the fashion article showing this mandate after posting all the fashion plates, so I hope you take a look at it as well. This is my pick of the 1824 Ackermann's Repository Fashion Plates As always, it is difficult for me to choose my pick of the fashions for any one year. I was drawn to this fashion plate due to the interesting composition. Not only is the dress and ladies face charming but the scene in itself was too unusual to be passed over. Hey all. I'm back with more Regency Fashions from Ackermann's Repository! I know these ladies look so prim and proper in their lovely Regency attire; but I can't help but wonder how many of Regency ladies were a bit wicked and wild beneath all the ruffles and lace. At least they are in most of the romances I like to read (wink). I had the opportunity to read a new author this week that put me in mind of the Ackermann's writing style and these oh so properly attired genteel ladies of the Regency era; and how they just might go astray if presented with the right temptation. Larissa Lyons was gracious enough to send me a copy of a few of her books and I thoroughly enjoyed all of them; especially, her racy Regency romance titled "Lady Scandal". I could almost imagine this frisky romance had been written in Regency times and would have been one of "those" naughty novels that ladies of the time were not suppose to read. The type of scandalous novel that would cause young ladies to remove it from their roguish brother's rooms; to read and share with a close friend - just so they could see what all the fuss was about and in hopes of gaining a bit of information that no one else would give them regarding men and their "goods". (Guilty - I would have been one of those girls, I'm just too curious for my own good some times). Thanks Larissa, this was a fun read!!! If Historical Romance is not your thing, I can vouch for her contemporary Good Girl gets reformed Bad Boy short story "No Guts - No 'Gasms" - It's a Hot and Spicy "Quickie" for those who like their super sexy reads to be modern and edgy. As they say different strokes for different folks; personally if it's hot, racy and romance - I love it. ****************** Now for the real Regency ladies of Ackermann's 1816 kicked off Ackermann's 2nd series of the popular Regency magazine that lasted from January of 1816 till December of 1822 with a total of 14 volumes. There were some structural changes in the magazine as it evolved between the 1st and the 2nd series; but the Fashion plates were a staple of Ackermann's Repository through out the entire 20 years of publication. This is my top pick of the 1816 Fashions A bit about Ackermann's Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufacturers, Fashion and Politics. Yes, that was its full title; but it was commonly known as Ackermann's or Ackermann's Repository when spoken about to keep thing simple. Ackermann's was a popular monthly magazine in England from 1809 - 1829 (The 1829 issues were printed as "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) that listed a wide variety of current subject matters to entertain the masses of Regency England. There were political commentaries, poetry, short stories, current events, special exhibit information, stock and commerce reports and other interesting tidbits in its pages. Each issue also contained wonderful color illustrations showing fashions, home decor, public places of interest, architecture and a variety of items that would be of interest to their readers. My favorites are the Fashion Plates and there were usually 2 in each monthly issue. During the twenty year run of this monthly publication, Ackermann's made specially bound volumes available for those who were collecting the issues. These "bound" book versions consisted of a 2 volume set for each year it was published. There were a total of 3 series in that 20 year period. Series 1 began in Jan 1809 and ended with the Dec issue in 1815. Series 2 began in Jan 1816 and ended with the Dec issue in 1822. Instead of giving just descriptions for each fashion plate listed they then gave current fashion trends for England and with the end of the Napoleonic wars with France on occasion French fashion trends were given as well. I thought it would be fun to include a bit of what it was like to read about what the fashion trends so you can see those below. This was the Fashion Section from the January Issue - 1816 It starts toward the bottom of page 57 with London Fashion then continues on with French Fashions; till it ends mid way on page 62 where the poetry section for the month begins. ********** I was most curious as to why all the fashion plates in Ackermann's referenced each as a "dress" rather than as a "gown". Some of my research showed that during this time period the word "gown" was a more intimate piece of apparel such as a dressing gown and would not have been widely used to refer to an elaborate evening dress until later in the Victorian age. So I accepted this as a viable possibility for why these plates were titled the way they were; especially since in the description of each plate, the dresses were also called dresses or frocks and very, very rarely listed as a gown. Then In Jan 2012, I received an informative comment from a viewer of my posts (see below in the comments section) stating that the naming on the plates such as Evening Dress or Ball Dress most likely referred to the entire ensemble rather than the main article of clothing being displayed. I have to concur that this seems the most appropriate explanation for the titles on each fashion plate. The Regency period had a fairly strict code of dress for each and every occasion therefore each plate would have depicted the correct form of "dress" for each occasion being represented such as how one would "dress" to attend the Opera or a Ball. Going forward whenever I see an antique fashion print I will mentally associate the word "dress" with the entire ensemble and for which occasion it would have been worn, just as a Regency lady would have done during that time period. It's so easy to think bluntly as we do in modern times and forget to read between the lines as they would have done in anther time. Thanks Adela for the bringing this to my attention. I love vintage fashion plates; however I have a special fondness for those that are in something other than the traditional frontal view. Previously I've shown many that exhibit the "back side" of the garment or the character is in motion such as pulling up one's stockings. Occasionally, I come across a fashion plate where the figure is sitting down and comes with a complete set of accompanying furnishings. Sadly many of the vintage fashion plates I have that show a seated figure only shows part of the furniture; which limits how that image can be used in a new digital scene. Today I get to showcase a piece of digital art using one of the rarer "furniture intact" seated, fashion plate images along; with a nice variety of French fashion plates from the years 1784-1787. These plates recap many of the styles I've previously posted about as well as one new one "The Pierrot"; and then at the end of the post I have a lovely assortment of PNG for the "Tea Lady". Enjoy! "Taking Time for Tea" - using an altered French fashion plate lady from 1784 It is so much fun to create digitally when using a furniture intact, fashion image; and I've created a "Tea Time" vignette using one such French fashion plate from the 1780's. The original version of this image had her in a very lovely pink ensemble; however I choose to use one of my color adaptations for my finished scene. This spring green gown gave the final scene a peaceful appearance as it coordinated so well with the greenery seen through the windows. French Fashion Plates from 1783-1787 1783 Grand Domino French Fashion Plate from the 1912 re printed edition of Galleria des Modes French fashion plates known as the Galleria des Modes collection have been printed and re-printed several times over their history. There are even black and white uncolored versions of these plates. The above fashion plate #170 is from a 1912 reprinted version of the original plate where the below plate 252 is an earlier printing from the 1700's showing the original color scheme. To find out more about duplicate versions see my post on fashion plates with different looks 1783 Grand Domino French Fashion plate from Galleria des Modes Personally I prefer this older version when comparing the two but it is interesting to see how much the colors on the fashion plate were altered in the later 1912 rendition. Considering it is unusual to come across a fashion plate of a Domino; I wanted to show both versions here. Another "Domino" can be seen HERE (she is the seated lady in yellow). A Domino was a large hooded cloak worn with an eye masque. This allowed a person's identity to remain private and were often worn to masquerades or any place a lady would not wish to be recognized. 1783 Grand Robe a la Francoise - French Fashion Plate In the style of "Robe à la Française" or Sack-Back dress. (Francaise = French version with the wide Pannier hoops and the long draped back) This particular fashion plate states it is "Grand" so this would be a more elaborate version of this style For more on 18th century fashion styles - click HERE 1784 Robe a l'Anglaise - French Fashion Plate This dress is in the style of "Robe à l'Anglaise" (Anglaise = English/American version with a bustle rather than pannier hoops and a draped back that begins at the lower "v" portion on the back of the bodice where the skirt begins ) The a l'Anglaise style was rarely worn with pannier hoops; however I believe this fashion plate may be an exception to that rule based on how wide it is. For more information on this and other late 18th century styles click HERE 1784 Robe a l'Anglaise - French Fashion Plate (Back and side view) This dress is in the style of "Robe à l'Anglaise" as seen from the side and back. (Anglaise = English/American version with a bustle rather than pannier hoops and a draped back that begins at the lower "v" portion on the back of the bodice where the skirt begins ) I like this fashion plate since we get to see the garment from the back and we get the added interest of the model holding her dog. How cute is that? 1785 Walking Dress and Siberian Sheepskin Muff - French Fashion Plate - 1912 version This is another example of two fashion plates printed at different times. The above plate is a 1912 reprint version from Galleria des modes and the below plate is a much earlier 1700 version of the same. 1785 Walking Dress and Siberian Sheepskin Muff - French Fashion Plate - Original It's just fun to compare different versions of the same fashion plate when available. Once again, I believe I like this older version of this Galleria des Modes fashion plate. This style also depicts a shorter hemline with a bit of ankles showing. Another of my posts with other shorter skirts can be seen HERE and my post on Stockings can be seen HERE 1786 Robe a l'Anglaise - French Fashion Plate with an extremely low bodice Yes, your eyes do not deceive you; this lady's "charms" are on display with this gown. Many fashionable women of this time period wore dresses that exposed a great deal of their breasts up to and including their nipples. Some women even had their portraits painted wearing such attire. If you find this style "titillating" I have a whole post dedicated to them - HERE 1786 1786 Robe a l'Anglaise - French Fashion Plate (back view) I thought this plate was interesting in that we see a dress from the back but in a seated position and since the furniture piece appears in its entirety this image would be a good candidate for becoming a PNG to use in a scene. 1786 French Fashion Plate I choose to show this plate since I loved the funky shoes she is wearing. It's a bit of an odd outfit as if dutch girl meets peasant Irish lass; however I believe she is wearing a "caraco". Caraco - A bodice style with the look of a fitted jacket that has a peplum skirting effect to it. Visit - American Duchess blog HERE to see a few examples of this style and if you notice one of them is so low a ladies breasts would have been exposed, as some like to do during this time. (this blog is also a great place to visit and see all the historical costume posts) 1787 Pierrot French Fashion Plate - back view The Pierrot style has a shaped bodice/jacket with a flared peplum or ruffled "tail". This style of jacket became popular in the 1780's and 1790's. I loved the whimsy of this garment and since it is a back view that was just a bonus for me. 1787 Pierrot French Fashion Plate - front and side view Another look at the Pierrot style from the front with a cat and dog bonus. For a lady of quality "Tea Time" was an event unlike today where we grab a cup on the run. How much more relaxing and enjoyable not to mention elegant was having tea years ago. I wonder what she might be thinking about as she enjoys her tea? I know it's not about the state of the economy or finding a job. Maybe she is trying to figure out what new fashion fun Marie Antoinette will be up to next. What to you think she is contemplating over her perfect brew? "Taking Time for Tea" - using an altered French fashion plate lady from 1784 I used my altered "green" version of the pretty lady for this Photoshop created scene. The background was created by inserting a few interesting photos. (a wall of windows in an old house showing a wooded lot and another photo of an oriental carpet). I liked the reflection that was in the "window photo" I used; and by adjusting the opacity just right in Photoshop I was able to get the dappled sunlight to appear on the carpet. Ackermann's Repository was a popular British publication of the Regency period and its monthly issues were in distribution from January 1809 till its final issue on December 1828. Fortunately for us, Ackermann's Repository was published by a printing house that specialized in producing bound volumes intended for reference and private libraries. Had this just been a fashion magazine, I believe many of the amazing plates would have vanished over time; however since this publication was a literary, economic, political, architectural,as well as a fashion publication; the pages of Ackermann's was treated as a reference item and several full collections of these bound volumes still exist today. (In 1829 Ackermann's had a fashion only publication - "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) Ackermann's was know in its day as one of the premier print shops and produced many illustrated book series and lithographs during it's time. From the beginning "The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics" as it was formally called was intended to be bound into books even though it was available as a monthly magazine as well. This is why you see the odd numbering system on the illustrated plates. At the end of each year, that years issues were available as a 2 volume set and could be purchased in a variety of binding options directly from Ackermann's or from several of the other binding houses or book sellers in London. A subscriber also had the option of having their individual issues custom bound to order. It's just so interesting how things were done 200 years ago. 1823 was the start of Series 3 When these were later bound into their 2 volume sets. Jan - Jun 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 1 July - Dec 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 2 1823 would have volumes 3&4 1824 would have volumes 5&6 and so on and so forth till the series was completed At the end of the 20 years of Ackermann's Repository there were 40 bound book volumes. According to the information I've found up to 1,000 bound volumes of Ackermann's Repository were sold per year. I've yet to find a number of how many issues of each magazine were sold per month; however it must have been a lucrative venture for it to have been published in both formats for a twenty year period of time. My pick of the 1823 Ackermann's Repository Fashions I have been posting all the lovely fashion plates from the pages of Ackermann's and continue now with Series 3 which ran from January 1823 - December 1828. These fashion would be considered late Regency and can be most easily identified by the more form fitting bodices, dropping waistlines and fuller skirt bottoms. Today I will be posting the fashions for 1823 and I hope you enjoy seeing them. I though I'd show this one since it included descriptions of the fashion plate showing hats. You will notice I left the pages intact and did not crop out the extra bits from the previous article that precedes the fashion articles; nor did I remove the beginning of the article that followed the fashions. This is so you can see how the articles ran one into the other and how they can jump from one topic to the next without the two being related. Here we have on page 305 the ending of a technology article followed by fashion then one about a new illustrated literary book soon to be available for sale by Ackermann's. Here at the bottom of the November fashions article we see an subtle advertisement for the new release of Ackermann's annual "The Forget Me Not". "The Forget Me Not" was another well known publication by Ackermann's. This "Literary Annual" was published around November of every year (just in time for the Christmas gift giving season) from 1822-1847 and targeted mainly the female marked. This new style of "annual" contained 12 engravings to represent each of the months and stories or poems to accompany each. It also contained a review of the previous year, the recent census, a family tree of the monarchy of Britain and a list of sovereign families and ambassadors for other kingdoms. This would have been a very safe gift for a gentleman to present a lady and in some years it sold up to 20,000 copies. It is believed that the bound version of Ackermann's only sold upwards to 1,000 copies per year; so this shows how popular "The Forget Me Not" was. ************* I hope you have enjoyed another trip through the Regency Fashions of Ackermann's Repository and that you join me again when I post the fashions for 1824. "There is no charm equal to tenderness of heart." ~Jane Austen I went to a wedding this past weekend and besides enjoying the company of friends and the spreading of well-wishes it made me think about love and romance! One of my most favorite writers famous for her love stories is Jane Austen. I have loved her books and the adapted films since I was a little girl! In my final research paper at university I presented on the topic of the female identity and the struggle throughout history for women to find their voice and perspective through writing. Jane Austen was one of the authors that I spoke about for her portrayal of women in a very strict and enclosed society. I quoted critics who wrote about the attitude of Austen's characters being one of "grace under pressure" - facing the world and it's realities with poise and dignity. Her love stories embody this grace and have always captivated me. The photos for today include my copies of favorite Jane Austen novels and pictures from a few of the film and television adaptations that I love including the 2005 Pride and Prejudice. Also, some photos taken of an article from an old Victoria magazine that featured a gorgeous Jane Austen inspired photoshoot. The illustrations are borrowed from Emma Adaptations which includes, among other things, a gallery of illustrations from early editions of the novel 'Emma'. Last but not least to begin my little Jane Austen tribute the 2007 ITV trailer for the Jane Austen Season - BBC adapted the Jane Austen stories beautifully and I definitely advise you see them all if you haven't already!

Good morning and welcome! I stumbled upon a very unusual and interesting book on toys and games. It was written in the French language so it was the pictures that caught my eye. I couldn't wait to share some of the pictures with you. Here are a few of the many engravings and colored plates.Maybe Jane and her sister enjoyed similar ladylike outdoor activities. The French dolls are dressed in the Empire style which puts them in Jane Austen's lifetime. The elaborately dressed poupees are just waiting to make their way into your greeting cards, collages and mixed media art. Hope you are all well. I am sending much love to each and every one of you. Why did Britain have a Regency Era? What was the Regency Era and what happened in it?
This is my favorite Ackermann's Repository fashion plate for 1811 This is my 3rd installment of fashion plates from Ackermann's Repository - Regency era magazine. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufacturers, Fashion and Politics. was a popular publications in England from 1809-1829. (The 1829 issues were printed as "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) I have found the articles and illustrations to be a fascinating glimpse into that time period. One of my favorite ongoing series in the magazine are the fashion plates. Each monthly issue usually included 2 Fashion plates, giving on average a total of 24 Fashion plates for the year. Though the magazine was published monthly; specially bound volumes were available from Ackermann's. These "bound" book versions, consisted of a 2 volume set for each year it was in publication. Ackermann's Repository "Bound" Series 1 ran from 1809 - 1815 with a total of 14 Volumes for Series 1 Series 1 Vol 1 was Jan - June 1809 Series 1 Vol 2 was July - Dec 1809 Series 1 Vol 3 was Jan - June 1810 Series 1 Vol 4 was July - Dec 1810 Series 1 Vol 5 was Jan - June 1811 Series 1 Vol 6 was July - Dec 1811 Series 1 Vol 7 was Jan - June 1812 Series 1 Vol 8 was July - Dec 1812 Series 1 Vol 9 was Jan - June 1813 Series 1 Vol 10 was July - Dec 1813 Series 1 Vol 11 was Jan - June 1814 Series 1 Vol 12 was July - Dec 1814 Series 1 Vol 13 was Jan - June 1815 Series 1 Vol 14 was July - Dec 1815 Today I will be posting the fashion plates for the year 1811.
