For all of you who have been following my Regency Fashion plate series of beauties from the pages of Ackermann's Repository, 1827 is the next to last year for them. Here is my pick of the 1827 Ackermann's Repository Fashion Plates Ackermann's Repository ran from January 1809 - December 1828 and had a very successful 20 year history. Every monthly issue included 2 fashion plates for a total of 24 in each year. Today I've posted the 24 fashion plates from 1827; of which the February issue shows two Mourning dresses as we encounter another death in the British Royal Family. Those two fashions are due to the death of King George IV's brother Prince Frederick - The Royal Duke of York. The Duke of York was King George III's and Queen Charlotte's second son. Since by this time King George IV had no living legitimate children; Frederick was his heir and next in line for the crown. With Fredrick's passing; the third brother(William) now becomes the heir to the British throne and will later become King William IV in June of 1830 with the death of King George IV. King William had no living legitimate children by his death in 1837 and it is here where we finally leave the Regency behind and step into the Victorian age as his niece Queen Victoria becomes the new ruler of Great Britain. I will post the Ackermann's Death notice for the Duke of York at the end of the fashion plates for those of you who like that extra glimpse into the real Regency world. All summer I've been posting some of the most amazing images found in the pages of Ackermann's Repository; which was a well know publication in England during the Regency period. My favorite have been the fancy Evening and Ball Dresses. There is just something so romantic about balls from the days of old and I enjoy reading about them in the pages of romance novels. My pick of the 1826 Ackermann's Repository fashions I'm a big fan of all things Regency and love to scope out whats on the web regarding this time period. I especially love finding fun bits and pieces that shed more light on how people lived at this time. While puttering around I discovered a very interesting article on the use of chalk on Regency ballroom floors and could not resist sharing it with you. The full article can be found HERE and I have to thank Kathryn Kane of Regency Redingote for sharing this fun bit of insight on ballroom practices at this time. I constantly read in the pages of Regency romances how thin and soft the soles of ladies dancing slippers were and it appears that mens dancing shoes seemed to be a bit slick on a freshly polished wooden floor as well. This being the case it was not uncommon for dancers to "chalk" the bottoms of their shoes to gain a bit of traction to keep from slipping excessively while they danced. In some cases the entire ballroom floor was lightly chalked to ensure the safety of all the dancers. And for extravagant balls artists were hired to chalk beautiful pattens on the ballroom floor that would then be slowly worn away as the dancers enjoyed themselves till dawn. (That must have been an amazing site) What a fun bit of Regency trivia. And now when I look at some of the amazing Regency Ball Dresses I'll think about a beautifully chalked floor to go along with them. Maybe one day I'll even read about a chalked ballroom floor in a romance novel. I might even create a fun Regency scene using some of the Ackermann ladies and the concept of a "chalked" ballroom floor - giggles. Now on to the fashions - Enjoy! Ackermann's Repository was a popular British publication of the Regency period and its monthly issues were in distribution from January 1809 till its final issue on December 1828. Fortunately for us, Ackermann's Repository was published by a printing house that specialized in producing bound volumes intended for reference and private libraries. Had this just been a fashion magazine, I believe many of the amazing plates would have vanished over time; however since this publication was a literary, economic, political, architectural,as well as a fashion publication; the pages of Ackermann's was treated as a reference item and several full collections of these bound volumes still exist today. (In 1829 Ackermann's had a fashion only publication - "Ackermann's Repository of Fashion".) Ackermann's was know in its day as one of the premier print shops and produced many illustrated book series and lithographs during it's time. From the beginning "The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashions, and Politics" as it was formally called was intended to be bound into books even though it was available as a monthly magazine as well. This is why you see the odd numbering system on the illustrated plates. At the end of each year, that years issues were available as a 2 volume set and could be purchased in a variety of binding options directly from Ackermann's or from several of the other binding houses or book sellers in London. A subscriber also had the option of having their individual issues custom bound to order. It's just so interesting how things were done 200 years ago. 1823 was the start of Series 3 When these were later bound into their 2 volume sets. Jan - Jun 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 1 July - Dec 1823 were part of Series 3 Volume 2 1823 would have volumes 3&4 1824 would have volumes 5&6 and so on and so forth till the series was completed At the end of the 20 years of Ackermann's Repository there were 40 bound book volumes. According to the information I've found up to 1,000 bound volumes of Ackermann's Repository were sold per year. I've yet to find a number of how many issues of each magazine were sold per month; however it must have been a lucrative venture for it to have been published in both formats for a twenty year period of time. My pick of the 1823 Ackermann's Repository Fashions I have been posting all the lovely fashion plates from the pages of Ackermann's and continue now with Series 3 which ran from January 1823 - December 1828. These fashion would be considered late Regency and can be most easily identified by the more form fitting bodices, dropping waistlines and fuller skirt bottoms. Today I will be posting the fashions for 1823 and I hope you enjoy seeing them. I though I'd show this one since it included descriptions of the fashion plate showing hats. You will notice I left the pages intact and did not crop out the extra bits from the previous article that precedes the fashion articles; nor did I remove the beginning of the article that followed the fashions. This is so you can see how the articles ran one into the other and how they can jump from one topic to the next without the two being related. Here we have on page 305 the ending of a technology article followed by fashion then one about a new illustrated literary book soon to be available for sale by Ackermann's. Here at the bottom of the November fashions article we see an subtle advertisement for the new release of Ackermann's annual "The Forget Me Not". "The Forget Me Not" was another well known publication by Ackermann's. This "Literary Annual" was published around November of every year (just in time for the Christmas gift giving season) from 1822-1847 and targeted mainly the female marked. This new style of "annual" contained 12 engravings to represent each of the months and stories or poems to accompany each. It also contained a review of the previous year, the recent census, a family tree of the monarchy of Britain and a list of sovereign families and ambassadors for other kingdoms. This would have been a very safe gift for a gentleman to present a lady and in some years it sold up to 20,000 copies. Today our Regency time travels for fashion will take us to the year 1824 and oh what an assortment of fashions we have for this year. The trends continue with the lowering and snugger form-fitting bodice and fuller skirt bottoms as we have seen for the past few years. Then is October we see see two mourning fashions; however this time it is not due to a death in the British Royal Family but for the French King Louise XVIII. I found it interesting that the British Court was ordered to go into a short period of mourning for the French king and that many in the British higher ranks were expected to follow along. I will post the fashion article showing this mandate after posting all the fashion plates, so I hope you take a look at it as well. This is my pick of the 1824 Ackermann's Repository Fashion Plates As always, it is difficult for me to choose my pick of the fashions for any one year. I was drawn to this fashion plate due to the interesting composition. Not only is the dress and ladies face charming but the scene in itself was too unusual to be passed over. I hope all of you who have been following my Ackermann's series are enjoying seeing these lovely fashions as much as I am. This posting concludes the final installment of the Regency fashion plates from Ackermann's Repository Series 2. (1816 - 1822); but don't be sad since there is still Series 3 still to come. As you look at the 1822 fashions, take note that in July the waist line drops down several inches; from under the bust (Empire style) where it's been for many years, to just above the natural waistline. With a more form-fitting bodice a major change in corsetry is also in effect. Personally, I would have appreciated this trend since it would have worked much better for my curvy shape than the previous fashion of the Regency. If you are a woman of curves, like myself and enjoy a good Regency Romance. Give "Pleasure by Pleasure" by Eloisa James a try. This is the final book in a 4 part series about the Essex sisters and one of my favorite Regency series' to read. In "Pleasure for Pleasure" the leading lady "Josie" is a curvy girl trying to fit into Empire style dresses with horrifying result; till she gets a dressmaker that works fashions to Josie's shape rather than trying to sruff Josie's body type into the willowy women's fashions of her time. I'm sure she had dresses made more in this late 1822 fashion and I'd have followed her trend too; especially if I would have won a delicious dish as the Earl of Mayne for my very own. I hope you give it a try. My top pick for the 1822 Ackermann's Repository fashion plates This is probably my all time favorite of all the Ackermann's Repository fashion plates. There are just so many things to love about. To start with it's one of the fanciest fashions since it is a Court Dress, the color and accents are spectacular and we get a full shot of the beautiful back as well as a glimpse of the front due to this great period cheval mirror. This is a presentation dress for a lady of high rank to be worn at Hollyrood Palace in Scotland. To learn more about this dress and fashions during September 1822; please check the bottom of this blog post for the Ackermann's fashion descriptions for that month. I loved this fashion plate so much; that I removed the background to create a png so the image could be used for creating fun digital art pieces like the "Ladies of Ackermann's" piece I did HERE. This is not a half-mourning dress as the colors would suggest at first look. It's the velvet material and types of trim used that keeps it from being so. It's the subtlety in the details that makes the difference; after all this is a time period of unspoken languages like the language of the fan, or the language of flowers. All summer I've been posting some of the most amazing images found in the pages of Ackermann's Repository; which was a well know publication in England during the Regency period. My favorite have been the fancy Evening and Ball Dresses. There is just something so romantic about balls from the days of old and I enjoy reading about them in the pages of romance novels. My pick of the 1826 Ackermann's Repository fashions I'm a big fan of all things Regency and love to scope out whats on the web regarding this time period. I especially love finding fun bits and pieces that shed more light on how people lived at this time. While puttering around I discovered a very interesting article on the use of chalk on Regency ballroom floors and could not resist sharing it with you. The full article can be found HERE and I have to thank Kathryn Kane of Regency Redingote for sharing this fun bit of insight on ballroom practices at this time. I constantly read in the pages of Regency romances how thin and soft the soles of ladies dancing slippers were and it appears that mens dancing shoes seemed to be a bit slick on a freshly polished wooden floor as well. This being the case it was not uncommon for dancers to "chalk" the bottoms of their shoes to gain a bit of traction to keep from slipping excessively while they danced. In some cases the entire ballroom floor was lightly chalked to ensure the safety of all the dancers. And for extravagant balls artists were hired to chalk beautiful pattens on the ballroom floor that would then be slowly worn away as the dancers enjoyed themselves till dawn. (That must have been an amazing site) What a fun bit of Regency trivia. And now when I look at some of the amazing Regency Ball Dresses I'll think about a beautifully chalked floor to go along with them. Maybe one day I'll even read about a chalked ballroom floor in a romance novel. I might even create a fun Regency scene using some of the Ackermann ladies and the concept of a "chalked" ballroom floor - giggles. Now on to the fashions - Enjoy! Chemisette in lightweight fabric used to fill in a neckline, especially one that is low cut. It is sleeveless and overlaps in front and back, and ties at the side under the bust with twill tape. A Regency lady might have worn very light fabrics (old-fashioned muslin was more like voile or batiste is today) but she did wear a few layers to compensate. It was said that a regency lady’s gown should be of such light fabric, she should be able to fold it up and have it fit into her reticule. It is no surprise that in wintertime, the mode of the period caused many a Regency lady to succumb to pneumonia. Because of their penchant for light, airy fabrics, they had to make up for the opacity needed to make them presentable (except for those shocking merveilleuses; ladies known to wear very little beneath their very sheer gowns; thin muslin shift at best) with the undergarments. Les incroyables et les merveilleuses This period image is of an outlandish early-regency dandy offering money for ‘services’, mistaking this merveilleuse for a prostitute. She wards off his payment (with crossed fingers); she is dressed in the most daring of period fashions. Oh those French! Shocking! Here is another images that shows less of transparent fabrics and more of the widening of the neckline. The stays were meant to present the lady’s assets on the proverbial platter. The gowns in this image surely support this idea to its best adavtage. Of course, on the most part ladies wore decent clothing. And here is a breakdown of what you might see if you stripped away the muslin gown. The Shift: This shift is the simplest of garments. It also acts as a dress-shield, keeping (on the most part) you from sweating on your outer layers. Shifts are about knee length to mid-calf-length. This youtube tutorial explains it wonderfully. This is a great garment for beginners to try. The neck should be adjustable with a drawstring. You see, the shift acts like the top half of the 'bra'. The regency stays will lift and cup the lady's assets, but the stays are shallow and they risk spillage if they are not contained. The shift's drawstring neck should gather an inch or two above the edge of the gussetted cups on the stays and rein-in those wild bosoms. The shift is very important and when dressing, one must spend some time making proper adjustments so that they are doing their job and not so tight that they risk closing in the neckline so much that they peep out from under the gown. That was the whole point. C. Willett Cunnington writes in the “History of Underclothes” that they commonly extended down the leg to just below the calf, where rows of tucks and lace and pretty detail would be applied. Also from “History of Underclothes”: “From Lady Stanley’s letter of 1817 – ‘We were insulted by the presence of (Lady) Charlotte (Lindsay) in a green silk Spencer, green silk boots, and trowsers to the ankle much below the petticoat.’” As I mentioned before, pantalettes were generally just a couple of tubes of fine fabric (not usually wide legged – just straight tubes) fastened about the waist with a ribbon. They were not without their problems: And this funny little story written by a young lady comes from 1820. “ They are the ugliest things I ever saw: I will never put them on again. I dragged my dress in the dirt for fear someone might spy them. My first dimity pair with real Swiss lace is quite useless to me for I lost one leg and did not deem it proper to pick it up, and so walked off leaving it in the street behind me, and the lace had cost six shillings a yard. I saw that mean Mrs. Spring wearing it last week as a tucker….I hope there will be a short wearing of these horrid pantalets, they are too trying. Of course I must wear them for I cannot hold up my dress and show my stockings. No one does.” A footnote to this story indicates it comes from Mrs. Earle: 'Two Centuries of Costume in America'." Read more: http://regencysa.proboards.com/ These are an interesting set of garments, and I personally am not brave enough to go commando by any means, so I tend to make myself full bloomers rather than these interesting garments. However, there are die-hards out there who are determined to be accurate (in spite of the prospect of a chilly bottom). They do make for a nice aesthetic, when a lady lifts up her layers of petticoats to reveal the cuffs of a nice pair of corded pantalettes. Very cute. The Stays: Once the lady has her undergarments on, she’ll put on her stays. Now I’ve depicted a set of full stays with a busk, but there were many styles and varieties of stays during that period, ranging from the tiny short stays to the one pictured above. The Bodiced Petticoat Though rarer than just plain stays, there was such thing as a petticoat undergown that had some boning in it that would provide support in place of a set of stays. This works best for ladies that are a B-cup or lower. I think with a C-cup or more, you should probably think about getting a set of stays. However, bodiced petticoats also served another purpose when not boned. They also could serve as a means to smooth out all the lumps and bumps of your undergarments and stays. There are lots of ways to make one of these. The Ravenrook’s Mode Bagatelle pattern provides a pattern for it—however you can easily take the pattern of your gown bodice and modify it to create a bodiced petticoat. Widen the neckline, of course, and make it sleeveless, add some soft (minmal) boning for structure, and you’re good to go. Instructions on how to make a bodiced petticoat from a gown pattern. It is a regency skirt on a waistband with two arm straps. The pattern for which you can either take from a commercial pattern or you can 'McGuyver' one using some creative thinking. You can follow the basic directions for a round-gown (see my personal post on Regency Drop-front/bib-front gowns) and sew it onto a waist-band you’ve sized to your empire waist. Add straps and voila. It will add volume and shape to your gowns, in addition to some lovely layers. I suggest 3.5 - 4 yards of fabric if not less. It should come to the line just above your ankles. Dressing: Katherine, costuming maven extraordinaire has made a delightful movie of how to put on a drop-front gown. What makes this video relevant here is that you can see her in her regency undergarments, including the high-waisted petticoat. There you have it. Today I continue posting more Regency Fashions from the pages of Ackermann's Repository and want to call your attention to "mourning dress" as viewed by those of Regency England. My last post for the year 1817 ended with two mourning fashion plates. This was due to the fact that all of England was in mourning over the death of their beloved Princess Charlotte. Ackermann's then continued the mourning fashion plates in memory of Princess Charlotte by showing two more in January 1818 and then in Dec 1818 they end again with two mourning fashion plates due to the death of Queen Charlotte (wife of King George III and grandmother of Princess Charlotte). These plates were shown in publications like Ackermann's since the entire country went into mourning when a member of the Royal family died. One example of a Mourning Evening Dress for 1818 Mourning Dress (not to be confused with a morning dress) was a strong custom in Regency Europe. In modern society we wear black to a funeral and for the most part that's it but in Regency times it was a different situation. When a member of the family died, those related went into mourning and dressed accordingly for a lengthy period of time. Depending on how the individual was related to you determined how long you were to wear mourning. Not only was how you dressed a factor but also the type of functions you could attend and how you were allowed to participate in those affairs were dictated by mourning customs of the time. There was Full-Mourning and Half-Mourning (Full-Mourning was ususally worn for the first half of the time frame and Half-Mouning to finish off the mourning period). The length of time you wore those extents of mourning were also determined by your relationship to the deceased. It was a common practice to dye your existing clothing black when you went into mourning since this was the quickest way to have the appropriate attire. The linings in cloaks were changed out for black ones and bonnets were usually remade to include black crêpe. However, if a family member was to be in mourning for an extended about of months or years they would have new fashions created in the usual manner and use fashion plates such as these in Ackermann's as a guide. Depending on the source you will find variances in length of time and what was appropriate or allowed in the mourning costume of Regency England; but to give a general guide line: 24 months for a husband or wife 12 months for parents or parents in law 6 months for a sister or brother 12 weeks for a sister in law or brother in law 2 weeks to 6 months - uncle or aunt 2-4 weeks - first cousin For instance a Widow might go into mourning for 2 years for her Husband. She would spend the 1st year and 1 day in Full-Mourning; wearing all black in matte fabrics like black crêpe or bombazine. Very few jewelry choices would be available during this time. After that she might wear Half-Mourning of grey, purple, lilac, lavender or a combination of black and white. A bit more sheen would be allowed in the fabric choices as would a larger selection of jewelry options. ************* Today I am posting the fashion plates from Ackermann's Series 2 for the year 1818.
