The print is an early 19th-century engraving depicting the Khoikhoi people, historically referred to as the Hottentots, which is an outdated term. The Khoikhoi are indigenous inhabitants of the southwestern regions of Africa. The image is labeled as "HOTTENTOT Men, Women, and Children," suggesting it was meant to illustrate the life and appearance of the Khoikhoi people. It was published in London by C. Cooke for a work titled "Modern & Authentic System of Universal Geography." As for the engraver, it is not specified on the print itself, but it may be identifiable through historical records related to the publication. The title for the print could be "The Khoikhoi of Southwestern Africa" to modernize the terminology and accurately reflect the subject. The year of publication is not given, but since it was intended for a geography system, it could date from the late 18th to early 19th century, a common period for such works. Description: This is a circa 1801 copperplate engraving from George Alexander Cooke's "Universal Geography" . The print is part of George Alexander Cooke's comprehensive work "A Modern and Authentic System of Universal Geography." This book was a significant compilation of geographical knowledge during the late 18th century, offering descriptions and accounts of various parts of the world, influenced by the age of exploration. It includes narratives of famed explorers like Captain James Cook and Ferdinand Magellan, detailing their discoveries and journeys that expanded the European understanding of the globe. Cooke's work served as both a chronicle and reference for the territories and cultures encountered by these voyagers.

"Goatherd on the Rock of Gibraltar" by Richard Ansdell, created around 1871, is a detailed and vivid oil painting. It portrays a pastoral scene set on the rugged cliffs of Gibraltar. Central to the composition is a young woman riding a white donkey, with baskets attached to its sides carrying young goats. Surrounding her is a flock of goats, some standing on the rocky path while others graze or look towards the viewer. The background reveals a misty, mountainous landscape with a serene view of the sea, creating a contrast between the rocky terrain and the calm waters. The woman's attire and the detailed rendering of the animals reflect the realism and skill of the artist, capturing a moment of rural life with a sense of tranquility and natural beauty. Jacques-Émile Blanche was a successful painter of portraits, landscapes, and still-lifes. He began his formal artistic training at the popular Acadèmie Julian in Paris and later studied with two of the city’s most well known painters, Henri Gervex and Ferdinand Humbert. Blanche was, however, admittedly drawn to and had close contact with the work of the Impressionists. “My leanings,” he wrote, “were towards Degas, Manet, and Renoir.” Like his contemporaries James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and Walter Richard Sickert, Blanche was active as a portraitist in both London and Paris. His numerous patrons included people of important social standing as well as literary and artistic persons such as Aubrey Beardsley, Marcel Proust, James Joyce and Virginia Wolf. Blanche’s complex, multi-figural compositions and subtle, psychological treatment of his sitters were highly esteemed and led to numerous commissions. This particular piece was among a series of paintings by Blanche on the theme of Berenice, the main character in one of Maurice Barres' novels. In it Desiree Manfred, one of the artist's favorites models, poses in front of the artist's cheval glass, which reflects her silhouette. It also happens to be one of the pieces where the impressionist influence is more evident in the brushwork of the composition, and can be found in Jane Roberts's monograph on the artist.

An original 19th-century watercolour painting Two Men in Rembrandtesque Hats. A striking monochrome image, painted in watercolour and cut to shape around the figures. Laid down on backing paper. This picture is one of an interesting collection of works that we have for sale that were collected by a single owner in the 19th century. As such, they reflect the life of the collector—the Continental travels and habitations of a British Victorian. Many of the works are exquisitely executed and small in scale, and have the quality of souvenir or memento. The majority of the works are French in subject and their owner evidently had connections with Newton Smith Limbird Fielding (1799–1856), the esteemed English painter and lithographer who lived and worked for much of his life in Paris, exhibiting at the Paris Salon and Musée Colbert. Newton Fielding, along with his brother Thales, was a friend of Eugène Delacroix, and was appointed drawing master to the children of the Duke of Orleans, the future king Louis-Philippe. Interestingly, the owner of this collection of works also had an interest in the Royals, collecting prints relating to both British and French monarchy. There are also works in the collection depicting Switzerland and paintings of the Neapolitan School, reflecting the influence of the European Grand Tour on 19th century British tastes. In good condition for its age. The picture may have minor imperfections, such as slight marks, toning, foxing, creasing or pinholes, commensurate with age. Please see photos for detail.
