Only One Redlands Changing patterns in a Southern California town By Lawrence Emerson Nelson, Ph.D. Retired Dean of Graduate Studies, University of Redlands Chairman of Humanities, California Baptist College 1963 First edition Redlands Community Music Association Hardcover 276 pages 9 5/16” X 6 1/4” SB4 The front and back covers would be in great condition except for the paper that is stuck to them. So unfortunate! The silver gilt lettering appears to be intact. There appears to be minimal shelf wear and little bumping of the corners. I’m certain a professional bookbinder would be able to repair this book if someone was so inclined. Inside appears unread. There is yellowing of the paper. Otherwise there are no marks, tears, folds creases or writing to any of the pages. The spine is tight and all pages are intact. Please see all pictures as they are worth a thousand words. Free shipping is for Media Mail in the U.S.

By 1889, the newly established town of Redlands at the southern base of the San Bernardino Range offered mild winters and spectacular views of the nearby mountains. The sunny, dry climate enticed eastern industrialists, and Redlands became a place of annual escape, a millionaire mecca by the turn of the twentieth century. Early philanthropists set the tone for an active civic culture that has lasted throughout the city s 125 years. These stories, researched and written by Joan Hedges McCall, tell how and why the town developed out of dusty, semi-arid lands into a green belt of orange groves, parks and Victorian homes. Find out where the water came from, how the navel oranges grew and who helped Redlands grow into the beloved city it is today.\"

(1 in a multiple picture set) If you have lived in an orange growing community like Redlands, CA, you know what a smudge pot is. For those who don't know, they were used to raise the temperature a few degrees when a rare freeze hit the area. They were filled with heavy oil and lit. They gave off a thick black (smudgy) smoke which covered the groves and kept the temperature from falling too far. (They also made everything in the area very dirty!)
