Hello everyone, We have had a return to winter today buta nice cozy lunch by the bay window willbe relaxing and cheerful.
Anyone who has known me for a while - okay, maybe not even that long - probably figured out fairly soon in our relationship that I love white. White walls, white furniture, white china. I simply like white. So it kind of goes without saying, that aside from fresh greens and mercury glass and maybe a bit of rust and wood, that nearly all of my Christmas decor is a shade of white. Quilted cream stockings. Kraft paper packages with white ribbon.White Poinsettias. There is however one bit of Christmas decor that isn't white. Over the past couple years, I've collected bits of red transferware to display during December. They have a lovely traditional Christmas feel to them. I've actually sold quite a bit of my collection, as it was simply too much to display. What remains were a few of my favourite pieces, and place settings for four. These Mason's teacups came from an older lady who brought them with her when she immigrated from Europe. She only had one saucer in tact, so they're paired with a newer version. The dinner plates are Johnson Bros., and are a fair bit newer. But that's the beauty of transferware. Different patterns mix well, and in my opinion, look more flattering together. You can see in the photos above that another hint of red that comes out at Christmas is a beautiful stitched tablecloth made from old European grainsacks. It's three lengths stitched together, and it has that thick, worn-soft from use, feel to it.

A Lover's Eye oil painting on an antique English red transferware saucer by Mason's with a botanical border of red ivy and lightly raised gadrooned edges; paired with a Chintz Indien frame from an 18th-century red, blue-grey, and ecru botanical Indian chintz fabric. The plate measures 5.8"; the frame measures 8.25" x 8.25". THE HISTORY: Lover's Eyes were a jewelry trend c.1785-1830 of brooches set with tiny watercolor portraits on ivory. Since they were cropped to eyes, they were in many ways more direct and intimate than traditional miniature portraits; but also because they were just eyes, they were often used as daring public testimonies of clandestine love affairs with mystery lovers. THE CHINA: Many of my Lover's Eyes are set in antique saucers and dishes which not only work as unexpected frames but add a layer of historical narrative on top of the origin story. Each piece has a unique blend, so that some are more romantic, some more exotic, and some more otherworldly. THE FRAMES: In addition to giving them greater significance, wall impact, and square practicality, the complementary images on these frames add yet another layer of historical resonance. Taken from early maps, gravures, wallpapers, and domino papers, they are printed with a state-of-the-art giclee printer using archival inks, heavy paper, specialty glue, wood bases, velvet backs, and hanging hardware. The plates are mounted with wire-spring holders and can be removed to be hung by themselves.

Hello everyone, I hope you all enjoyed a lovely weekend. We took some time off from our project and enjoyed our weekend. Since it is Mosaic Monday and Show off Your Cottage Monday I thought I would join in both today. The mosaic above is my Valentine gift from my beloved-it is a beautiful white orchid and a pretty new teapot(one can never have too many)! The grocery store had some pretty potted roses so I couldn't resist as I will divide it in two or three when it is warm enough to plant out doors and with luck it will bloom for years in the garden. Since I love roses and teacups I brought out my yellow teacups to make this mosaic for you. I always love an opportunity to share my red and white transferware collection. I finally have enough to fill the shelves in between the cupboards. Now,I am thinking a third shelf would look good! This gravy boat was a gift from my sister in law. The pitcher and basin came from Coulson's in Summerside=it seems that is where a lot of my treasures come from and at very reasonable prices too. This teapot I found in an antique mall in Maine. I love finding ways to display my china so this was a find for me! I remembered this morning that some of you asked to share my view on the movie Dear John and I have to confess I liked the book much better. I think I could only rate it a 6 out of 10 but maybe my expectations were too high since I loved the book! So, there is lots for you to enjoy at the Little Red House and also at Cielo's House in the Roses. Thank you Mary and Cielo for hosting & Thank you for visiting me, Carolyn

Vintage white and cranberry transferware porcelain footed pitcher This is one of my favorite colors in ceramic Transferware, is the cranberry red Transferware. This is a very nicely detailed pitcher with the pattern covering most of the surface and even the handle has a pretty vine decoration, The antique design depicts a European Italian Venetian village scene, with buildings, churches, some peasant and a gondola on the canal which suggest maybe that the hand painted toile scene was in Italy, Venice. About Transferware: Transferware, celebrated for its subject matter, technique, and enduring colors, remains a timeless classic, garnering admiration today just as it did in the 18th century.
