My Twins really enjoy playing with shapes that they can create scenes with. I started by laminating cello sheets and cutting some shapes from them. I cut ones that would look like ponds or water, trees, grass, a sun and it's rays, and I cut some clouds from some plain vibrant white printer paper. Then I cut the birds from sold IKEA place mats that I had on hand. They came in a pack of 4 and I have two of them in our rainbow window. The other two have been used at various times on the light table, but I thought it would be really fun to cut them away from the place mats. They love having the birds free to create scenes with! I don't know if IKEA has these place mats anymore. but you could do this with any translucent place mat. The boys added some frogs and shamrocks to the scene, as well as some butterflies I drew free-hand from overhead projector transparencies. I colored them with sharpie markers. 1. Story: Tell the story of Zacchaeus meeting Jesus (based on Luke 19:1-10) 2. Lesson a. INTRO: Last week, we heard how Jesus met and healed someone on the road to Jericho. Who can remember who it was? Bartimaeus the blind beggar. Today, we will learn about how Jesus met another person in Jericho. He wasn’t blind. He wasn’t poor. In fact, he was very rich. But he wasn’t well liked and he was short. His name was Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector. We’ve learned last time who a tax collector is —Tax collectors were Jews who helped the Roman government to collect taxes from their own people. Jews hated the Romans. So they also hated the tax collectors who worked for the Roman government. The tax collectors also often collected extra money for themselves. So if they were supposed to collect 100 dollars, they would collect 150 dollars instead and keep 50 dollars for themselves. So Zacchaeus was not popular among the Jews because they saw him as a traitor and a cheat. And for all the money he had, he felt that there was something missing in his life. He wasn’t a happy man. One day, he heard that Jesus was passing through. He must have heard good things about Jesus. He knew that Jesus was friends with many tax collectors. There was something different about Him — He was not like all the other teachers of the law or Pharisees. If only he could just see Him … But Zacchaeus was too short to see over the crowd. So he ran ahead, and he climbed a sycamore tree, to catch a glimpse of Jesus. b. JESUS CALLS: When Jesus reached the spot: He looked up and saw Zacchaeus — He had come for him He called him by name — He knew him already! He invited Himself to Zacchaeus’ house c. JESUS TRANSFORMS: What’s the result of Zacchaeus warmly welcoming Jesus into his house? What effect did it have on him? Zacchaeus stood up and told Jesus, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Last time we learnt about the rich young ruler who thought he could earn eternal life by obeying all the laws himself — when Jesus told him that his wealth was his idol, he could not accept it and went away sadly. But for Zacchaeus, a tax collector who knew how unrighteous he was — he knew there was no way he could earn salvation on his own. But when Jesus came into his house and touched his heart, he was transformed. He could give up his money willingly and generously. d. JESUS SAVES: The people around were not so happy. “Jesus has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” They thought that Zacchaeus was not worthy to have Jesus in his house and wondered why Jesus would “waste” His time with a sinner. Jesus told them, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Jesus came to save the lost. Those who thought they were good enough didn’t want to be saved, so He came to those who knew they were not good enough. And because Zacchaeus received Jesus into his house and heart, he was saved and had eternal life. e. JESUS DOES THE SAME TODAY Today Jesus also does the same: He looks for us — while we were lost sinners He calls us by name — He knows us before we were born He invites Himself to our hearts We can all be like Zacchaeus and welcome Jesus happily. And we can let Jesus transform our lives and give us eternal life in Him! Memory verse: Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. 4. Activity Suggestion Craft with memory verse Song: Zacchaeus was a wee little man Worksheets: Crossword puzzles Get kids into groups and share: Jesus looked for them and calls them by name. Have they accepted Him into their hearts? Pray for them.

Happy Easter Are you looking for a new Easter tradition? Or maybe just a fun thing to do with your kids? It doesn't need to be Easter to go on a Bible trivia hunt. You can do that any day of the year! In fact, it's a great way to get your kids excited about the Bible. You could simply switch out the Easter trivia questions for some trivia about a different Bible story. This would be an enjoyable and enlightening family activity to do several times a year. For the past few Easter Sunday's our elementary aged kids at church having been going on a Hunt for Easter. They break up into teams, and follow clues which lead them around the church property to various locations. At each location, they must answer Bible trivia questions about Jesus' death and resurrection. While on this hunt, they have the chance of running into Elmer Fudd, who's chasing down the rabbit. "Be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting wabbits." When they've answer the trivia question, they are given a piece of the map, and their next clue. Once they finish their last clue, they can put together the map in order to figure out where the rabbit is hiding. (The end of the hunt, but not the true treasure. The real treasure lies in answering the questions and learning the story.) If you want to make your own map, you can do this at Google Maps. Once you're there, you can type in the address of your treasure location, and off to the right side of the screen on the map, you should see a small icon that reads Satellite. Click on that and you will be able to get an aerial view of the spot you want. You can zoom in as much or as little as you'd like to. You can make your hunt as simple as you want, or as complex as you desire. I think it would be fun to get in a car and travel to each location, but you could simply hide clues around your home too. We've done treasure hunts both ways. If you don't plan on leaving the house, make a hand drawn map, marking the x yourself. Before you start, you've got to figure out your locations and clues. At each place you stop, come up with 2 or 3 trivia questions to ask. I would bring a Bible along in case the kids are stumped and can't figure out the correct answer. If the story isn't one your kids are familiar with, read it aloud together before you go on a hunt. Then the story will stick more once the kids are trying to figure out the trivia questions. If they have to search for the answer themselves, they will probably remember it next time they're asked! Want to make it really difficult, don't give them multiple choice questions; make them come up with the answer. Or if you feel like your kids are too old for trivia questions, make them more personal reflection questions. Sound fun? Let's go for it! WINDING THROUGH THE WOODS WITH A GENTLE FLOW, THE PLACE YOU ARE TRYING TO FIND; THE FISH, DUCKS, AND FROGS ALREADY KNOW. (Creek) The trivia questions are: 1.) Since this was a church activity, our last location was meeting back in KidZone for a story and worship music. If I had done this hunt at home with my children, I might have had the treasure be back at home, where we would take communion together as a family. In fact, we did this as a family the night before Easter. We watched an Easter movie of Jesus' death and his resurrection. We discussed what we had seen, and the parts that stood out to us. We read aloud from Isaiah chapter 53. My husband led us in communion, with sparkling red grape juice and sourdough bread. It was memorable. One of the things that really stood out to my husband and I was while Jesus was dying on the cross. The soldiers are putting the nails in his hands and feet, and "Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.'” Luke 23:34 This wasn't done in anger. It was the words of someone who was broken, pleading and begging for the lives of others. He could have been selfish at that point, and just endured the punishment. But his thoughts are outside himself. He's desperately asking his daddy to forgive them. He genuinely doesn't want anyone to suffer, no matter what they've done to him. They were killing him, and he was pleading for their forgiveness. That is real love. We talked with our children at great lengths about grace. We described it to them as getting something good that they don't deserve. It's a gift that we all must accept. It does us no good to know about, but not accept it. In order to illustrate the point to them better, we had a gift. One of the requirements for getting ready for school each day is to have your room clean, and your things picked up around the house. If something is left out in the living room, kitchen, computer room, etc., and they have left for the day, it becomes mine. I did the work of picking it up, so it now belongs to me. I have a box in my closet full of these items. When my children do a job around the house, anything that is not a normal chore, they have the opportunity of choosing an item from the closet. It's kind of a trade. I do a little work, they do a little work. For Easter, we told the kids we were giving them some grace. My closet was to be emptied out. They were free to take back all their toys and books. No jobs would be necessary. It was grace. A good thing that they did nothing to deserve. The slate was wiped clean, and they could start fresh again. We have that same opportunity on a much larger scale. Every day we have the chance for a fresh start. Jesus paid the price for our weakness. All we have to do is accept it. We must say thanks for the gift, and receive it. It's that simple. Forgiveness is in our grasp. Don't let it get away from you. There is peace in knowing that you have been shown mercy. You're not going to get what you deserve. You're going to get a gift! The gift is there waiting for you to take it.
If you're planning a trip with your toddler or even just headed to church on Sunday, you might be interested in creating a DIY quiet book to take with you. Quiet books can keep your child busy and quiet for hours! If you have a family of young kids, you know very well the hair-pulling stress of trying to keep them quiet for a given amount of time where you're among other adults also trying to keep their focus, whether this be at church, in a meeting, or on an airplane. My mom put together quiet books for me when
This past Sunday we learned about the story of the Memorial Stones. The stones were picked up from the midst of the Jordan River, from the place where the Priest feet had stood. Joshua picked 12 men (one from each tribe) to pick up a rock out of the Jordan and carry it on his shoulders all the way to Gilgal. The rocks were then turned into a Memorial for the Hebrews. The stones would help remind the Hebrews of all that God had done for them. The children made a Diorama as their "Take Home" project. They LOVED gluing on the 12 stones. I had already glued the back ground into the shoe box...this helps save a bit of time. I also asked member to donate shoe boxes months ago. That way I was insured to have enough shoe boxes for this project. Our Memory Verse this week was Joshua 4:7. We sang the Memory Verse to the tune: "If you're happy and you know it..." The kiddos did great with the Memory Verse. For a "Review Game" I had paper mache rocks that the children had the opportunity to pick up and carry on their shoulder to our "Gilgal." They were soooo cute carrying them on their shoulders, pretending that they were soooo heavy. They had to answer a question from the Bible story before going to pick up a rock from the "midst" of the "Jordan." Then they brought the stone over to the other side of the room, by carrying it on their shoulder, and placed it in the pile. We made our version of a "Memorial." They had a great time. On Wednesday Evening the children made a version of a "Memorial" out of 12 stones...This project is in their Explorer Journal. They are heavy and had to be made of cardstock paper to help support...however, I still suggest you be careful lifting this. They children loved their "Memorial Stones."
