Spirulina & Chlorella - das sind im Moment wohl die am häufigsten genannten Superfoods. Die Algen sollen entgiften, verjüngen und die Gesundheit fördern. Aber was steckt wirklich dahinter? Halten die Nahrungsergänzungsmittel was sie versprechen? Spirulina ist eine Gattung der Cyanobakterien, die früher auch als „Blaualgen“ bezeichnet wurde. Nachweislich existieren diese schon seit 3,5 Milliarden Jahren auf der Erde. Nicht nur in Küstenregionen, sondern auch bei Binnenvölkern war die Alge sehr beliebt. Bis zu 35 Arten werden unterschieden, darunter z.B. Spirulina platensis und Spirulina fusiformis. Spirulina ist im Handel auch in der Kategorie „Mikroalgen“ als Nahrungsergänzungsmittel erhältlich. Zur Herstellung von Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln ist die Art der Spirulina platensis sehr beliebt. Spirulina kommt in stark alkalischen Salzseen, aber auch in Süßwasser vor. Vorwiegend besiedelt sie flache, subtropische Gewässer mit hohem Salzgehalt vor allem in Mittelamerika, Südostasien, Afrika und Australien. Spirulina wird seit vielen Jahrhunderten als Nahrungsmittel genutzt. Hier wird sie vor allem für ihre Nährstoffe geschätzt und sie gilt zudem als eine der ältesten Lebensformen der Welt. Was steckt nun in Spirulina platensis? Spirulina ist ein hervorragender Vitaminlieferant. So enthält sie unter anderem Vitamin E, Vitamin B12 und ß-Carotin, eine Vorstufe von Vitamin A. Außerdem ist Spirulina platensis reich an Mineralstoffen. Mineralstoffe sind für den Menschen lebensnotwendige anorganische Substanzen und Verbindungen, die er selbst nicht herstellen kann. Man benötigt sie jedoch für zahlreiche Körperfunktionen und Prozesse. Man teilt die Mineralstoffe im Körper in zwei Gruppen auf. Mengen- oder Makroelemente sind mit höheren Konzentrationen also 50 mg/kg Körpergewicht vertreten. Spuren- oder Mikroelemente sind in einer geringeren Konzentration als 50 mg/kg Körpergewicht vertreten. Spirulina platensis ist reich an Mineralstoffen. Es enthält unter anderem Kalzium und Magnesium. An Spurenelementen kann Spirulina platensis unter anderem Zink, Mangan, Eisen und Selen liefern. Diese sind z.B. am Stoffwechsel, der Zellteilung oder dem Aufbau des Bindegewebes beteiligt. Spirulina platensis ist auch sehr reich an Antioxidantien. Denn es enthält, wie schon erwähnt Vitamin E, sowie Mangan und Selen, welche als Antioxidantien wirken. Antioxidantien schützen den Körper vor freien Radikalen, welche Zellen angreifen und funktionsuntüchtig machen können. Spirulina platensis liefert ebenso eine Menge an sekundären Pflanzenstoffen, so zum Beispiel Chlorophyll, welches eine sehr ähnliche Zusammensetzung wie unser Blutstoff Hämoglobin hat. Deshalb soll sich Chlorophyll positiv auf das menschliche Blut auswirken. Außerdem liefert es den sekundären Pflanzenstoff Phycocyanin, dem Spirulina seine leicht bläuliche Färbung verdankt. Phycocyanin soll ebenfalls als Antioxidans wirken. Spirulina platensis kann auch als Quelle für besonders wertvolle Aminosäuren genutzt werden, denn es enthält alle essentiellen Aminosäuren. Diese lebensnotwendigen Eiweißbausteine kann der Körper nicht selbst produzieren und ist deshalb auf die Zuführung von außen angewiesen.
