Don’t throw out that holey pair of jeans! They make for a great quilt and when paired up with a few different fabrics, you can make quite the beauty. Check out this list of 8 patt…
A couple of nights ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, and, in that semi slumber state when I was letting my mind wander while trying to go back to sleep, I thought of a solution to a puzzle…
I've been a bit down in the dumps lately. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because of all of the transitions happening in my life... or lack of sleep... or both. Hopefully I'll feel better once summer starts. In the meantime, I've been doing quite a bit of crafting to cheer myself up. Recently I took my love of rainbow crafts and combined it with my love for paper plate crafts to make... tada! This lovely rainbow paper plate weaving craft! Let's Weave a Rainbow! This post contains affiliate links. This means that I make a teeny tiny bit of money from any purchases made through the Amazon links below. Thank you for your support! For my full disclosure policy, click here. A Little Background and some Tangents... This craft was inspired by Cassie Stephens' awesome woven tree art projects that she did with her 3rd graders. (If you haven't seen this art project, you need to check it out. Seriously. These kids did some gorgeous work!) Instead of doing trees, I made myself a rainbow. Oh! It's time for 2 random tangents: 1) At my son's preschool they have this lovely poem that they say every day with the kids: Chase a few rainbows Swing on a star Keep your face to the sun And be the best that you are. (Lovely, isn't it? Good advice for kids and adults too.) 2) And... if you are like me and always on the lookout for good books... here are our 15+ favorite books on rainbows: A Rainbow of My Own Planting a Rainbow The Magic School Bus Makes a Rainbow The Rainbow Goblins The Rainbow Book Elmer and The Rainbow My Many Colored Days The Day the Crayons Quit Moonbear's Skyfire Mix it Up A Day With No Crayons Red: A Crayon's story The Crayon Box that talked Mouse Paint Little Blue and Little Yellow A Color of His Own Quest Ok! Let's Weave a rainbow! First, I cut a paper plate in half and painted it with tempera paint to look like the sky. Notes: Usually I encourage using cheap paper plates for crafts, but this time you need to use nice thick sturdy ones. I added clouds later on. It made the sky look nicer that way, I think. Then, I cut out 7 slits on top of the plate and 1 slit on the bottom. Then, I created my loom with some yarn. (I tied the two ends in the back.) Then, I started weaving the rainbow, starting from purple first. I tied on the purple strand to a grey one. Then, I wrapped masking tape around the other end of my purple yarn to help me weave faster. To weave, I simply went over, under, over, under, etc... To change colors, I tied on the next color yarn. Once I finished, I tied on the red strand to a grey one. And that's it! I really hope you enjoy making this craft with your kiddos too! Looking for more fun weaving crafts? If you've ever wanted to know how to make Bitty Blocks, then this oh-sew fun and simiple tutorial is exactly what you need!
Is anyone else obsessed with the Orange Peel design right now? I have been dreaming of Orange Peel wall paper for my dining room, I just free motion quilted an Orange Peel design on my recently finished Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt (pictures coming soon) and I just started this Orange Peel mini quilt last week! I'm obsessed! Obsessed I tell ya! So when my boss at Just Sew asked me if I wanted to be in charge of the mini quilt of the month for August and she handed me the book 101 Fabulous Small Quilts by That Patchwork Place and I spied an Orange Peel quilt in it - I knew I just had to make it! I've always wanted to make one and this was the perfect opportunity. I decided to do a low-volume, scrappy background with bright fabrics for the leaves. I've been loving that combo for a while now so I'm pretty excited about finally doing it. (I had a little helper helping me plan my scrappiness. She's pretty cute, eh?) Because I'm on a deadline (this has to be appliqued, pieced, quilted and bound by the end of the month) I've set a goal to applique 8 leaves (or 1 row) every day. I figure each leaf takes about 10 minutes to applique so it's just over an hour out of my day that I'm dedicating to this project for the next week or so. I'm already half way done and I'm really loving seeing it come together! I've posted more pictures of this project on Instagram. Feel free to follow along if you'd like. My username is gigis_thimble. When I first posted about this project on IG, my friend Jodi Nelson of the blog, Pleasant Home showed some interest in the pattern so I roped her into making an Orange Peel quilt with me. Be sure to stop by her blog if you haven't already. She's posting about her Orange Peel quilt today too! We thought it would be fun to start an Orange Peel Quilt Along but after a little research we found out that Jessica from the blog, Quilty Habit has one going on as we speak! So Jodi and I are just going to sit back and enjoy the Orange Peel Quilt Along ride! We hope you'll join us! Jessica's got great pattern suggestions, applique tutorials, a schedule and there will even be some great prizes given away at the end! You can click HERE for all the details. Since someone on IG asked for it, I am going to do a tutorial on my favorite method of applique (the same method I'm using on this project). So be sure to check back next week if you're interested in that. So...Orange Peel - are you feelin' it? Yes or no? ~ Amber

COLOREAR Y RECORTAR
Last weekend, after a couple of years absence, The International Quilt Festival returned to Chicago/Rosemont which is 10 minutes away from my house! Little compares to the quality of this festival. The quilt shows were fabulous and the vendors a plenty. I love to start off walking through the show to get inspiration and be awed by the beautiful art. Although I took quite a few pictures I will share only a few. As I was walking through the show I quickly noticed this quilt and immediately knew who it belong to. Although I have seen her work many times on her blog, seeing her signature style in person was amazing! A World of Many Colors by Georgeta Grama I loved the perspective in this quilt. It really gave the feeling of walking down an alley with graffiti walls. Amsterdam Alley:The Shortcut Between by Leslie Tucker Jenison I was attracted to the colors and piecing of this quilt. I love the use of hexagons and the secondary design that is made. Details of Catena by Timna Tarr. This clever piece was made from candy wrappers...Pixie sticks, Skittles, Reese's Pieces, Starbursts and more! Appropriately named, Sweet Blooms by Pat Kroth. The use of color and the shape of a Tuning Fork arranged every which way really caught my eye. Tuning Fork #6 by Heather Pregger One of the exhibits was called Chicowgo. I just thought that some of these were just so clever. Gotta love the play on words! by Mary MacNeil (I took VanGogh's Cow for my daughter who teaches Art) by Mel B McFarland by Connie Donaldson by Mel B McFarland This past Thursday, I was fortunate to attend a lecture and trunk show by Victoria Findlay Wolfe. She is well know for her blog, book and modern quilt theory, 15 minutes of play. She also won Best of Show at Quiltcon this year with her modern take of the double wedding ring quilt. It was amazing and honoring to meet her. Here are some of her quilts she shared. Her grandmother's quilt where she got her inspiration. 15 minutes of play made fabric Everything but the kitchen sink quilt. Mixing antique blocks and blocks made from Made Fabric. Playing with stripes. If you ever get the opportunity to hear Victoria speaks I would recommend it! Here is her cow quilt...could have fit in the Chicowgo show! So what else have I been doing? I have spent some time in my sewing room but since this post is already quite long I will only share my July Art Journal page which is ready for Monday! The rest will wait for another day! Can you believe that July is just around the corner? My page is a little predicable with the 4th of July being the main attraction of the month. Without further adieu...My July Calendar. Here is the link to see what some other's are doing.
